Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!
About Mrs. Jellyfish

I booked our DJ today! I’m so excited because I was not only able to get the DJ I wanted, but I also negotiated $200 off his fee! Who thought that was possible? Certainly not me. I don’t consider myself a very good haggler/bargainer. Mostly, I think I’m usually too nervous to try and bargain, but in this craptastic economy, everything’s fair game in my mind. So I figured, you never know unless you try, right? What’s the worst that can happen? And it worked!

(The story with our DJ is that he used to DJ for my favorite radio station growing up, Mix 106.5. So when I saw him DJ at a wedding two years ago, I immediately remembered his name from the radio and we struck up a conversation. He ended up being a great DJ and got everyone on the dance floor. He also showed good judgment when my inebriated self asked him to play the Pussycat Dolls “Buttons” and he told me that was inappropriate wedding music. Normally, I’d be miffed, but this guy had such tact that I found myself agreeing with him. Anyway, I digress.)

So how did I manage to score $200 off his fee?

Well, I mentioned the economy and how everyone’s hurting, asked if he could do anything to help me out. After some talking, he threw in a discount for the fact that I was booking over the phone without having to meet with him in person, another discount for our wedding being on a Sunday and another discount because our venue is one of the vendors they like to work with. I also mentioned Mr. Jelly’s military service (and it may have helped that I had to put him on hold when Mr. Jelly called from overseas), and he threw in a small discount for that. All in all, I saved $200, and am now able to check another thing off the list. One thing down, 398 to go.

Have you asked for discounts on vendors? What tactics have you used?

Prior to wedding planning, I established a budget for each part of the wedding and if the quote came back higher, I would tell them my budget was $xx.xx and if they could do anything to help out!

ok you are an awesome bee! And Mix 106.5 was an awesome radio station! Although I am a WILD 94.9 girl :)

congrats on your DJ AND on the discount! I am always afraid to ask for discounts…but I’ll try harder!

I haven’t had much luck getting discounts, but I have been very good about staying with my budget. So, if a vendor isn’t able to stay within my set limit, I go elsewhere. I guess it’s a good thing that the only item I was dead set on having was our venue!

I would ask for a discount or a perk (depending on the vendor, and I would customize it depending on what we needed/wanted) if I was able to pay them in-full up-front (and that leaves us with one less thing to do on the wedding day or prior to it)).

In order to do this, you need to have your budget tight and we willing to wait a few weeks to book each vendor (to have your paycheck in your bank account).

You also have to make sure that the vendor you use isn’t going to go bankrupt as you’ll use all of your money (…but if you remotely thought that as a possibility, then you shouldn’t choose them to begin with).

I love scoring discounts! I suck at negotiating though…I just get all tongue tied!

I’ve just honestly asked and as soon as they hear i’m a teacher, they’re pretty nice about it. Apparently, it’s a well-known fact that teachers aren’t paid particularly well.

@ Valhalla
If you approach it as a “would you be willing to offer something in return for xxx (being a full-payment, etc)” it is easier than just asking “can you give me a discount.”

Or “My budget for this needs to be around xxx, is there anything that we can do to get it around that amount” also helps because when you use the word “we” — you’re acting as a team and willing to work that vendor as a team (not just being a dictator).

When you use terms like “would you” and “we” it helps to make the situation more friendly.

If the vendor really can’t help you with a discount, ask if he could recommend anyone within your price-point. Take it as “artistic differences” and not something negative. They too have bills to pay (and may not be able to take much off the price), and you also have a budget.

I’m so bad at asking for discounts. I wish I could negotiate. That’s awesome for you! :)

I bargained with my dj too! I hired a guy I work with who DJs on the side so he automatically gave me a discount. Then I told him that we wouldn’t need lighting because it’s an outdoor event and that we only needed one set of equipment that will be rolled the 50-or-so feet from the ceremony to the reception. In the end I saved a solid $150!

I always ask for discounts–even if the economy were great! I’m not a hardcore haggler, but I think it never hurts to ask. Weddings are expensive; I like to work with people who are willing to negotiate.

I asked amost all of my vendor for a discount. I’m glad I did, most of my vendors did give a discount or gave something extra for free. However, I don’t think I would have asked if the economy was better.

Nice..an old DJ from Mix 106.5, you’re going to have some awesome music! I think that was awesome of him to negotiate, so good for you for trying!

Maybe further discounts for references? We are looking for a DJ for our wedding in Livermore. How much was he?
Thanks

I love getting deals! Finding a DJ is exciting - for some reason that’s one of the most intimidating parts of the whole wedding planning process for me!

yeah, I’m on a sad student paycheck and we’re paying for the wedding, so we have to get discounts where we can. I pretty much tell them what we can afford and see if they can work with it. I’ve been really happy with the “discounts” people have been able to offer too.
