Bali, I am Still Coming For You

March 4th, 2010 @ 6:27 pm by Mrs. Pug

Bali, I’m very excited about you. And my swimsuit. But not about your hangers-on.

Ew. I am like a magnet for mosquito bites. I will get bitten to death while Mr. Pug, in the same environment, will be bite free. Jerk. Just kidding. But really, I hate mosquitoes.

There are theories as to why this happens, including something about people like me emitting chemical compounds like uric acid/urea (great, I am *peeing* out of my pores), but no one knows for sure.

Unfortunately, Bali is full of these little f&*kers.

I kid you not that when I heard this, I seriously started to reconsider our honeymoon location. But, anticipating the utter embarrassment I would feel explaining to people that I passed up, of all things, the opportunity to go to Bali due to, of all things, a fear of mosquito bites, I decided to find a different solution (people just don’t understand my pain. Heartless).

A frequent Bali traveler friend of mine (she studies Balinese music, why oh why didn’t I specialize in Indonesian beach property law) recommended Avon Skin So Soft’s Bug Guard.

Apparently this stuff is the bomb—effective, with a pleasant scent, and it comes with or without sunscreen. I myself will be going for the sunscreen-repellant combo, and in the disappearing purple color!

I’m thinking about emptying 100+ tubes into a vat and just dunking myself in it every morning.

But that’s not all—in the event that I don’t want to lug around a bottle of this magic potion but still want to protect myself from the carnivores, I got a few of these bug repellent towelettes:

And just for a little bit of fun, I picked me up one of these:

The Avon Shea Butter Brown Sugar Body Scrub—I am attempting to exfoliate my skin to luminous, glowing and smooth perfection before the big trip. And since it’s brown sugar-based, I can also give my arms a thorough licking after each shower. Yum! (I don’t actually do this.)

Are there any skincare issues you are taking into consideration for your honeymoon?

I use Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard for local hikes, but if you head to a tropical area with LOTS of mosquitoes, just be warned it wears off fairly quickly and requires frequent reapplication. Generally, when I travel to SE Asia’s tropical forests, I take along OFF! Deep Woods repellant with DEET (I know, super serious chemical, but the most effective when you’re in the tropics). Check out the CDC recommendations: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/content/mosquito-tick.aspx

Dryer sheet for sure!!! I’m allergic to the main ingredient in most bug repellants, and the dryer sheet works like a charm every time! And you smell wonderful!! lol you can also take a fresh dryer sheet and kinda rub it over your clothes and body… but try it before hand… I had a reaction to this. Damn sensitive skin!

This is going to sound so unlikely to be effective but…VANILLA body spray!! I got this advice from a super-mom type that I worked with after I came in with 20 bites acquired in about 10 minutes the evening before. She even went out to her car to give me her bottle because I think I looked so skeptical she knew I wouldn’t try it. Amazing. They hover…and then they leave. Even my FI uses it now!! Bath and Body Works is great! I’m not sure if it will hold up in Bali, but so far it has worked pretty well for me, better than other stuff I’ve tried and much more pleasant.

When mr. froyo is around they love him, so I usually don’t get bit, but if he’s gone it’s all about me. Good selections!

Ok, I am just like you. Will get a million bites when others get none. I need INDUSTRIAL Strength repellant to keep the bugs at bay….

Anyways, I spent 6 weeks in Indonesia, and you don’t have to worry!! When you get there, go to the nearest drug-store type place, and ask for bug repellent. I wish I could remember the name, but it comes in a white bottle, with pink writing. It is like a liquid, that smells Incredible, and it soaks right in, no greasy-ness, no smell. Probably cancerous, but it kept the bugs off of me in the sumatran jungle, and I only wish I had brought a ton of it home. Everywhere we went had the same stuff, so I am sure you can find it.

Enjoy!

“peeing out of my pores” just made me laugh really, really stupidly. I’m embarrassed now.

Apparently I “pee out of my pores” nonstop. When I went to the Dominican Republic, I was bitten literally EVERY. INCH. of my body. Even in places that weren’t exposed any time except in the shower! And not only did I have maybe a thousand bites, they were OOZING NONSTOP, and it’s not because I was itching…I just knew it would make it worse. I was oozing out of every inch of my body.

I tried literally everything I could find, but at that point I was pretty much in the state of near-leprosy so nothing really had an effect until we stopped at the pharmacy and bought some over-the-counter pills. I took Zyrtec and finally found my relief because it knocked me out flat. I couldn’t wake up to experience the rest of the trip along with its itchiness. I even refused an in-home massage. No bug repellent worked there. We got like the super-power repellent and, hey, it ate all of the wording and paint off of my phone and camera, but couldn’t scare away a single bug.

I am scared to death that this is going to happen to me on my honeymoon. I’ll probably pack an extra bag just full of potential bite remedies.

Mosquitos love me too! I’ve worked in a few tropical locations and while Avon and bug repellant are a must, garluc pills are the best thing ever! Just make sure you get the odorless ones!!! :)

my younger sister attracts mosquitos too. She used to wear a repellent bracelet. But she still got stung on her EYELIDS of all places. Walked around in the south of France looking like Quasimodo (the fat eye, not the hunchback part!) ;) good luck with your new products!

Mosquitos love me. I have literally been followed by a cloud of them (like in cartoons) as I’ve run through woods. I also swell up like a balloon at every bite point. The fella didn’t believe me until he saw it, and was esp amazed since he had watched me spray like a mad woman before heading out. It sucks as I’m a pretty outdoorsy kind of girl.

Skin so soft only works when I’m at a backyard BBQ and can constantly reapply. Otherwise OFF backwoods has been the only thing that works for me. I had mild success with those all-natural braclets you can wear (with peppermint or eucaplysis or somthing), but when I went to Brazil with that, all bets were off. I would also recommend ‘Afterbite’ anti inch, so it will keep you from scratching.

And don’t forget to spray your head. During that horrible hike, I got bit through my hat at the base of my hairline, and OMG that was the worst ever.

I’m also a mozzie magnet :( i bought a stick repellent called ‘Cutter’ from REI and it worked well even in the jungles of South America. An aerosol-type spray may also be helpful for a big overall spritz. When in the Amazon rainforest, I used the stick repellent, a liquid spritz type AND an aerosol spray. Guess what? I STILL got bit.

Good luck!
