Finding the Venue, Part II

March 4th, 2010 @ 11:46 am by Mrs. Paisley

I told you the final choice of our venue here, but gosh darn it, it took a whole year to decide to have it there! That’s because Professor Paisley and I have had a very long engagement, since Sept. 2008, because we needed time to save up for the wedding. And, we would have chosen the family lake house from the get-go, but at first the family wasn’t sure if we were going to sell it or not. Thankfully, for us, the answer is not.

What were the other contenders? Well, we were picky. We wanted someplace that would allow us to party late (think 2 AM) and loud (live band). That’s hard to find! Honestly, hells wedding bells, why must most venues shut down at 9 or 10 PM?!?!

We also wanted someplace of significance to us. The main contenders were:

Nestldown, in Los Gatos.

Really close to my grandma’s house on my dad’s side, this place was so gorgeous when we went for a site visit, but too expensive, and shut down too early. If we had it there, we would have had an after party until 2 AM at the nearby Toll House Hotel.

The Ebell Club of Long Beach.

This beautiful, historic woman’s philanthropic club was too pricey, and didn’t hold much significance for us. Although I liked it so much I did try an unsuccessful attempt to conjure up significance by tying the fact that it is a historic women’s club to my desire to support feminist causes. Um, yeah… I’m pretty sure I’d be supporting the wedding industrial complex, not feminism, with the prices Ebell is charging.

MacCallum House in Mendocino.

Situated in the beautiful seaside village of Mendocino an hour and a half from my hometown, this is a favorite spot of ours to visit. My grandparents would take me here every year on my birthday as a kiddo, and give me $50 to spend in the shell shop. Can I just say, you can get a s-load of shells with that kind of dough! Anyway, the MacCallum House allows music outdoors until 10 PM in their wedding tent, but guests can mingle in the hotel and bar until 2 PM with music indoors. Only downside is it’s so far from any major airport, which is why we didn’t end up choosing it.

The Green Room in San Francisco.

You can rent this affordable gem in the city of San Francisco into the wee hours of the morn, there are no time restrictions! We were so, so close to booking it, but we wanted an outdoor ceremony in an affordable location prior to partying it up Green Room-style. We checked out lighthouses…

…and parks for an outdoor ceremony:

But ultimately, we found the S.F. summer fog to be too unpredictable and the lighthouses too windy, and we just couldn’t warm to the idea of an indoor ceremony.

Those are just a few of the dozens of venues we researched up and down the great state of CA. We checked out places in our residence-of-two-years Orange County, but also Big Sur, San Diego and Santa Cruz (where we met), as well as the north coast (where I grew up).

We’re so happy our wedding will be a lakeside-under-a-willow-tree ceremony performed by an old friend. At grandma’s house, to boot. When I picture what it will be like, I picture this:

OK, I’m not digging the paper wedding bells, but the rest looks splendid to me!

Now I know what y’all are thinking. You’re thinking, ‘really, Miss Paisley? A frog and a mouse? C’mon, be realistic here!’ ;-)

We may not be mouse and frog, but we’re definitely loving the at-home, laid back country style from this favorite children’s book, A Frog Went A-Courting, adapted and illustrated by Nina Barbaresi. Yeah, I can’t help but find wedding inspiration EVERYwhere. Plus, it doesn’t hurt my mom is a children’s librarian. I blame her.

Anyhoo, how is the venue search going for you? Was it/is it a struggle to find a venue with a later-than-typical curfew? Wouldn’t it be nice for us late-night-party brides if there was a website dedicated to such venues? It would eliminate hours of research!

I think it is a great idea to get married at grandma’s. I wish I would have considered my parent’s house more when we were looking for a location. But they have crazy neighbors who probably would have pulled out a shotgun if they saw 100 cars driving down the driveway and heard any music.
I’m glad grandma’s house is going to work out for you!

Your venue looks great! And what a special meaning it will have to you too. Your storybook inspiration is too cute. Love the eclectic seating.

Oh my god, yes.

Late curfew is our #1 priority. We’re more set on being able to party past 12 than we are on what side of the country we’ll be on. Being able to find a list or guide of places like that would make my life so, so much easier.

My parents have offered their house as a location, but 1) it’s not that big 2) it’s really close to the neighbors and 3) said neighbors have been known to call the cops on my family before.

How I wish we had a family home to host the reception. I think backyard receptions are so special because of the family connection.

It’s cool that you get to use a family properly. Although I will say that one of my cousins got married in the Green Room. You can do so much with it! (She kept it really simple though and it was still beautiful.)

I had a hard time finding a location to do my ceremony since I was having my reception at a different location (compliments of having Asian elders), but after numerous heart breaking inquiries, I was finally able to find a location that will allow me to have my dream ceremony!!

I love your location though - such a comforting and relaxing atmosphere!

Our venue search was easy, we only looked at one location. I love that you are having it at your grandma’s house. I’ve never been to an at home wedding, but imagine it would have such a personal homey feel like Father of the Bride!

The late night thing was a problem for us too! We needed a place until at LEAST 1 AM because we’re getting married on New Year’s Eve. The parks and community centers in Seattle all have 11PM curfews because they’re close to neighborhoods. And other places wanted us out and cleaned up by 12:30 which just wasn’t going to happen. We finally found a place that didn’t charge a racket for NYE and will let us stay until 2AM.

I should have thought about the late night when I booked… our wedding is over by 11PM!

I think it’s so special to be able to have it at a family member’s home! And I wish we could have a later reception. Ours ends early, but I’m still trying to talk FI into an after party!

yes!! most of the venues we looked had closings at 9, 10 if you paid extra. the one we went with closes at midnight. Hence an after party may be in the works, we’ll see!

I LOVED nestldown! I didn’t see it in person but the pictures online made it look like a fairytale, but I totally agree it was way too expensive. I’m glad you found a place!

wow, you guys definitely searched high and low to find the right place! so many of those locations were gorgeous, but in the end your family’s house makes the most sense and has the most meaning, by far.

I’ve been to Nestldown for a wedding ceremony. It is beautiful there….even though it was freezing! in October.

I’m sure I would LOVE your mom. I could live in the library, and take my older daughter to different libraries throughout the week. Now I have Froggie Went A-Courtin’ stuck in my head.

Finding a venue was really difficult for me. Both my fiance and I are Asian so our parents (mainly my parents) require a 10-course Chinese meal. However, we don’t want to have our reception at a typical Chinese restaurant, so we were willing to pay extra to have it elsewhere. Our criteria when looking for a venue was to find a place that allows outside catering, open bar, and can fit at least 300 people. We looked at the SJ City Hall, Scottish Rite Center, and Mexican Heritage Plaza. We ultimately chose Mexican Heritage Plaza because it met our criteria AND it looked really beautiful. AND it was affordable.

We had a similar issue. Most places we looked at had a 10pm close, which means ending at 9 or 9pm. No way! We chose a place with a midnight curfew, so better. We’ll be heading to the local dive bar afterwards : ). PS - love the MacCullum House! That is where my avitar picture was taken!

Let’s here it for more late-night venues in the U.S.! It doesn’t seem to be an issue in Spain and other countries where weddings sometimes last until dawn! I can’t think of anyplace in the states where you could really party out on the town until dawn, other than NYC. But correct me if I’m wrong!

@MOHmama: Lucky duck you went to a Nestldown wedding?! P.S. I’ve got the song in my head, too. “Frog Went A-Courting, he did ride, mmm hmm!” Lol!
@Nhammie: 10 courses?!? Yummers!
@OctPumpkin: that’s cool you’re familiar with Mendocino, and that you’ve been to the MacCallum House! Aren’t the flowers in Mendocino unreal? So gorgeous.
