In Sickness and In Health…

March 4th, 2010 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Sewing

Friends, Mr. Sew has a problem. Actually, he has two problems.

First, he gets sick when he travels. Every. Single. Time. For example, on our planning trip a couple months ago, he was sick upon arrival—fever, snot, the works. By the end of the week it had petered down to a cough, but he was still miserable for a while.

Secondly, he gets sick when he’s nervous. Well, I think most people do, but he gets REALLY sick. He was sick for an entire month when we first started dating. I think it’s really sweet now, but at for a while all I could remember is him throwing up on my roommate’s rug and her being seriously mad. He even went to the doctor, who (like any good college doctor) tested him for mono, and then sent him home with the pronouncement that there was nothing wrong with him. Uh, other than the fact that he was vomiting at least once a day. But eventually I stopped scaring him or something, because the stomach lurches luckily ended.

I think you can see the problem here. Wedding = travel & nerves.

The last thing I want is a sick husband the day-of. And we definitely don’t need his illnesses keeping us from enjoying our limited honeymoon vacation.

So, how can I keep him well?

First, we’ll be pumping his immune system up as much as possible. Citrus will be his new best friend. And he’ll do Airborne shots. Regardless of it’s errant miracle-cure claims, it’s still a good way to get some vitamins.

Second, he’ll keep the water intake high. We already do a pretty good job of getting enough water, thanks to my friend, Mr. Straw. Isn’t it strange that it’s so much easier to drink water when you have a straw? Maybe it’s just me…

Third, I’ll do my best to not stress him out on the trip. Though I think the airport and its craziness will do more damage than I can ever hope to repair.

Our slightly overweight bag of bags at the airport…luckily we didn’t have to pay extra!

What else can I do to keep his anxiety at bay and his body healthy? Should I beak out the swine flu masks? Calming herbs? Valium?

My hubby has high anxiety when flying and the doc prescribed him Ativan - it really helps!

Also if he does start getting physically sick from stress leading up to the wedding maybe a doc would prescribe anti-nausea meds like those used for morning sickness (phenergan). He could take 1/4 pill for a really small does to see if it helps!

‘zinc’ and ‘vit C’ are what we use to keep the colds away on a normal basis.

I really hope Mr. Sew stays healthy!

I completely agree that drinking through a straw helps water consumption! I lost my camelback water bottle about a month ago and my water intake has dropped by half! Time to get a new one :)

Stress reduction techniques: does he have a sport or other practice that he does to relax or center himself? Aikido? Yoga? Running? If not, it may be time to explore this, so he has somewhere to put his energy in the weeks before the wedding. Whatever it is he does, make sure he’s continuing to do it right up until the wedding.

Symptomatic management: Kava tea has relaxing properties and has always helped me when I’ve had abdominal pain as a result of stress. Ginger is great for nausea. If he gets motion sick at all, esp. if he’s extra stressed, he might try some dramamine. It’ll probably knock him out, but sometimes that’s a good thing for flying.

I would recommend getting him on some Acidophilus right away. It will help his immune system alot!

haha, those masks are funny. poor mr. sewing! i think you have the right instinct, particularly with the travel plans–try and make it as “stressless” as possible (but without overloading yourself!). i also agree with katherine–would something for his tummy be a good idea?

Poor Mr. Sewing! I’m a big fan of Rescue Remedy for stress/travel:

They used to only have it a Whole Foods/Natural foods stores, but even my local Ralph’s has started carrying it! :)

Oh gosh airports. When I was a teenager flying home from Florida, I was waiting in a massive Southwest check-in line. I mean, massive. Kids were puking all over that line. And guess what I did? I puked.

So I definitely feel for Mr. Sewing! Pretzels and Sprite seem to help me a lot, but I’d also suggest doing curbside check-in :)

Poor Mr. Sewing! Maybe you can arrive in Hawaii a few days earlier to get him accustomed to the environment and be more relaxed when the BIG day arrives?

Airborne is ok, but he’s better off taking a multivitamin. After a certain point, too much vitamin C isn’t going to do much. Every time I go to the doctor, they beg me to take a daily multivitamin- my gyno said take a Flinstone vitamin- tasty, and all the vitamins you need. It’s SO easy! We both take one every morning, and love it! Try generic too- just as good! Do that, GET ENOUGH REST and stay well hydrated (looks like you’ve got that one down!). Not getting enough rest (sleep, calm, relaxation - all of it) is the easiest way to a sick bed. I know it’s hard, Fi and I really struggle with it, but I know 100% of the time if I am running myself ragged (ie planning a wedding while trying to balance a new house, new puppy, and my job) and not getting enough rest, that I will be at the doctor’s office in no time. GOOD LUCK, Congrats & Best Wishes!

He may also have an allergy to the air fresheners they use on airplanes. Or, I suspect there’s logs of mold that is lurking. Might add an antihistimine before flying too (it’ll also help with the ear popping).

Poor Mr. Sew! I used to have a _really_ nervous stomach, and would barf whenever I was nervous, upset, sleep deprived, stressed - you name it! Luckily it’s calmed down a bit, but one thing I found that really helped me was breathing excercises. When my doctor first recommended it, I thought it sounded a little flakey and that she just didn’t want to give me on any more drugs, but I gave it a shot and they really helped! I’ve even passed it on to a few friends who’ve said it works wonders. It’s pretty basic yoga breathing stuff, but basically you just take slow deep breaths and really focus on filling your lungs the whole way up.
Picture your lungs in three exagerated parts - the bottom the middle and the top. Pretend the bottom is all the way in your belly and the tops go up to your shoulders and collar bones. Try to start your breath by just filling the bottom of your lungs, and puff your stomach out with all the air you’re taking in. Then fill up the middle of your lungs and feel your ribs expand, then fill up the tippy tops of your lungs and feel the air pushing your shoulders up and back. Then breath out the oposite way - relax your shoulders, relax the ribcage and feel your belly fall as you push out all the stale used up air. You’ll feel a little silly at first, but I found doing this for a few minutes really helped calm my stomach and I down!

evening primrose oil! plus it makes your nails pretty! and if you eliminate dairy there is less mucus to be infected, i have major tendancy toward sinus infections and not eating dairy like a week before traveling helps me a lot!

I use Zi-Cam and it works like a charm whenever I feel the sniffles coming on!

And @alivoo01: we’ll be arriving several days earlier so hopefully this works out okay!@iswimibikeirun: I hadn’t thought of that! now I’m going to be paranoid about what I’m breathing on those airplanes! lol.

I have low immunity. I can totally understand. what I do for travel is I take either a half or quarter of gravol in pill form (NOT the chew-able ginger kind, if you have a weak stomach this does not help) 1 hour before I travel and it settles my nerves and stomach. Talk to a naturalpathic for building up immunity. Elderberry is excellent I was told for warding off flus, colds, etc. Also they have acupressure bands to wear on your wrist (available at drugstores) for flying. They work seriously.. Well for me anyways. I hope everything goes well.

Have you ever had Emergen-C? It’s this vitamin packed powder that you mix with water and rink. Whenever I’m about to get sick, I drink that every day and I manage to get better quickly.

You’re such a good wife-to-be!
