Suiting Up the Men: Attempt 2

March 4th, 2010 @ 10:55 am by Mrs. Hot Wings

So, for attempt #2, I sent Mr. Hot Wings and Twin Brother Hot Wings down to Macy’s to try on suits and pick out a couple options. They decided to pick out 2 suits: one for larger guys and one for the slimmer guys. (Interesting that they thought this was a good idea, but I let it go) This time they got help from a salesperson immediately. Here’s what they chose:

Suiting Up the Men: Attempt 2 : wedding menswear 11 Ralph Lauren

(1) Ralph Lauren Striped

Suiting Up the Men: Attempt 2 : wedding menswear 22 Alfani Red

(2) Alfani Red Label

The salesperson actually told them about a suit sale Macy’s would be having starting the following week!

  • The suits were on sale.
  • We had a 25% coupon for the suit sale.
  • We opened a Macy’s Card for an additional 20% off.

The total cost per suit ended up being $192 (Ralph Lauren) and $166 (Alfani) before taxes for each suit, respectively. Great, right?

Here’s my concern. It’s a striped suit and a solid suit. The solid gray Alfani is somewhat lighter than the Ralph Lauren stripped suit. They also have different lapels. I needed evidence they wouldn’t clash with each other, so I made everyone go back to Macy’s.

Below are the jackets next to each other and a picture of Mr. Hot Wings and a Wingman on each arm.

What is Wingman B doing, you ask? It’s a bromance. There’s no other way to describe it.

The numbers are even—four men in the striped suits, and four in the solid. Everyone has bought their suit already so I guess I can’t really go back on this decision!

But, what do you think? Is it OK to have mismatching suits?

I think that looks great! I’m with you on being unsure until I see it, but I think these would totally work. They don’t clash and it looks like an individualized, thought out ensemble.

YES! Matchy Machy can get boring… I think the suits compliment each other well.

We’re having mismatched suits! I emailed all of our guys and told them to buy medium gray suits that they liked. So who knows what they’ll choose! I figure the shoes and ties will pull everything together.

I sat here for a few minutes thinking about it and I actually think that it should work out quite nicely. Having all one style could be a little boring and as Miss Dachshund mentioned… the accessories should tie everything together. :)

I think it’s a great look - and it’s very considerate of the guys to think of different sized suits! My fiance is tall and broad shouldered and just plain BIG, which means most suits look terrible on him, especially the slim European cuts. This is a great option for bridal parties of varying sizes!

Totally ok, I like the way it looks! Plus, unless you’re right up close, you can’t even tell!

Yes, I think it’ll look great and just like Trail Mix said, since they’re all grey, you won’t be able to tell until you’re close up!

Definitely! Think of all the amazing bridesmaid combos that aren’t perfectly matched!

Looks nice! I think suits are less formal than tuxes, so why not mismatch them the same way people would bridesmaid dresses? :)

We also asked the guys to get their own medium to dark gray suits. Mr. Groom got his at the Macys sale this past weekend! Hello Tommy Hilfiger 3Piece Slim Fit Suit for $210!! - I’m crossing my fingers the mix/match looks okay… Mostly I’m not worried about it! The girls are getting their own dresses… so I think it’ll be fine, right??

Your two suits will be great together! They are pretty close to the same shade of gray. I’m a personal fan of the stripes! What is Mr. Groom wearing??

Anyone have gallery pics of a complete mix/matched semi-formal wedding?? I’ve only even seen it in more casual weddings.

i think it’s totally acceptable to have mismatching suits, especially when it’s just two different suits and they aren’t drastically different–kind of like with different bridesmaids’ dresses. but really, the suits are similar enough that i don’t think it’s a problem at all. it’s done and they look great, so no more worries for you about this one!

I think it totally looks great! We are also having mismatching suits. I think its nice if you can distinguish certain people and their roels from other bridal party members.

Those saving you got seem to be a great deal the $192 (Ralph Lauren) and $166 (Alfani) suits at that much, your weddings going to be special.

@Stesse: I thought it was pretty considerate of them too!
@gibsonkk: Oh, good idea. I’ve got a couple. I’ll throw them together to create a post!

I’m so surprised there are so many of you who are also doing mismatched suits! I feel so much more relaxed about it now.
