What About the Kids?

March 4th, 2010 @ 9:39 am by Mrs. Argyle

While we are not including children in our wedding (this includes not having a flower girl or ring bearer), I love the idea of making sure the kids have something to do. Weddings are not exactly the most kid-friendly places, but if kids are a huge part of your life and family, I definitely think they should feel included.

One of the newer trends in weddings is having a kids’ section or kids’ table with activities for the kids to work on. I love this idea. There are plenty of examples all over the web, but this one featured by Heather at We Met in a Bar is a great example of how to keep the kiddos occupied.

The bride included things like an activity book, Slinkys, colored pencils and pinwheels, but the options don’t stop there. Here are some other fun activities/ideas to consider:

  1. Cover their tables in butcher paper so they can color on the table.
  2. Coloring books (to be used with colored pencils – must not ruin your dress!)
  3. Fun stickers
  4. Pipe cleaners
  5. Puzzles
  6. Party hats

The list could go on an on. Did you find a way to keep the kids occupied? Or did you not have kids at your wedding?

Love this idea - we are having kids and doing a kids table with kid friendly games and food. It was a tough decision on kids or no kids but at the end of the day we are just big kids too so it seemed right to include the little ones we love.

We’re planning something like this, but they won’t have their own table. We figured parents would rather keep an eye on the little devils. We’re planning on coloring books, crayons, and maybe some other little toys in a mini bucket or lunchbox for each kid at their table.

We’re not having kids at all, but if we were, I’m not sure it would make a difference–all our “kids” in our families are 12+!

That said… I loooove this idea regardless. So cute!

We didn’t necessarily want all of the kids at one table, so we had them sit with their parents. I had bought a bunch of activity boooks, coloring books, crayons, and pencils and gave them to my DOC to hand out to the kids!

That way they were entertained, but I didn’t have to dedicate an entire space to kids!

We’ve invited lots of kids, but it’s turning out that most of their parents want to use the wedding as a mini-vacation, so they’re planning on leaving the kids with their grandparents or nanny and traveling to San Diego sans children! I’m kinda sad, as I was really looking forward to seeing all the kids (and meeting some of them for the first time).

That said, I’m hoping to do a photo scavenger hunt for the remaining kids following Martha’s tutorial on her weddings website. It’s a cute idea, to give each (older) kid a disposable camera & a list of things to take a photo of. Not sure what kinds of photos will ensue, but it might be nice to have images taken from a child’s perspective!

Definitely doing this for our park reception! We’ll also have some rubber balls and bubbles to play with, since it’s all outside. :)

We went kid-free as well, and parents were surprisingly receptive and actually thankful for a grown-ups night out.

We had a kids’ room off to the side of the ballroom. When the guests arrived for the cocktail hour, the kids’ dinner was set up for them to eat right away (cheese pizza, mac n cheese, chicken fingers, etc.) We had a TV with DVD player set up and rented some kids movies, had coloring books and activity books from the $1 aisle at Target.

Most importantly, we hired a few babysitters to watch the kids and keep order over the room. Parents were able to sign the kids in and out, so they could dance when they wanted or they could just hang out. It worked out really well and I highly recommend it if you can!

we’re not having kids at the wedding, but honestly after reading so many great ideas on weddingbee about how to keep children occupied, i don’t think i would have minded as much if our friends did have more kids to bring along!

There will only be three kids under the age of 5 and we felt we had to invite them because of the family relationship, so they will be in charge of keeping their kids occupied and out of trouble. After that, there’s just a 12 year old, who’s very mature, and an 18 and 19 year old. Otherwise, everyone is of legal drinking age so I’m hoping to a fun party night.

My cousin has 4 children, and all of them will be under the age of 12 when they come to our wedding. Friends and family members also have little ones, so a kids’ corner is a must at our reception! I’m asking a close friend who has young nieces and nephews and loves children to be petty officer in charge of kids during the reception. I know she will plan great activities so it will be smooth sailing!

I bought Mad Libs for the older kids since I’ll be making a Mad Libs for the Mister and I. I also have crayons and stuff ready, but I’m not 100% what it’ll look like yet.

@alohababy28: That’s a good idea if you don’t have too many kids attending.

@Stesse: I just saw something like that - they called it “I Spy” and everyone had to take pictures of what was on the list.

@TexicanMexican: Babysitters are a great idea if you can fit it into the budget.

@Miss Lace: Mad Libs are always fun!

@AzinAugust: I loved pipe cleaners as a kid!

If we were having kids at our wedding, we’d probably do this. But we only have two people under 18–one is my 18-yo brother’s 17-yo girlfriend (so she can sit with the “big kids” ;), and the other is the most loquacious 13-yo I’ve ever met (he can hang with the adults at his parents’ table). Makes my life a little easier, anyway. ;)

the fiance and I have maaany little bitty nieces and nephews, so I think what we’re going to do is ask our siblings if they’d rather have the little ones with them at the table with them (all of our siblings and nieces/nephews are in the wedding party) or if they’d rather us have a babysitter and “kid room”– we want everyone to have fun, and we’d rather not have them leave early because kids getting tired (we’re thinking of having sleeping bags and stuff for the kids if they get sleepy, if we have a kid room). I guess we’ll see!

This is a great idea! We’re having kids at our second reception, and we’ve already planned out a special kids’ buffet line (think chicken fingers, carrot sticks, grapes, etc.). A table with coloring and activities is a great idea!!
