Bali, I Just Can’t Quit You

March 5th, 2010 @ 12:19 pm by Mrs. Pug

So. Another honeymoon preparation post. I’ve posted about swimsuits, skincare, and now you get to listen to me blab about hair removal. Lucky, lucky you.

While this isn’t a topic or practice to which I give much thought during the regular course of my boring life, the wedding has made my life *so* much more exciting and I can’t help but want to take a little extra step in this area to prep for the honeymoon. I want to be showing some soft, smooth, and non-furry baby bum skin in those swimsuits!

As with everything, this is an incredibly complex multi-layered issue.

The first decision: to shave or to wax?

I’m going to go with waxing, because while shaving makes sense on a regular basis, this is *special* right? I want to be smooooth… for a looooong time…

Then—legs, arms, underarms, pinky toe? They wax just about everything now. I’m definitely getting my legs waxed, but what about my arms?

I am hairy for an Asian woman—no fair, gene gods! No fair!

While I don’t have tufts and tufts of arm hair, the black, long, spindly hair against my pasty skin kinda stands out.

Nevertheless, the thought of watching my arm hair grow back or continuing to wax my arms is not appealing, so I’m leaning towards “no” on this one. You are horrified. That’s okay.

And then, there’s the world of bikini waxing. Oh, the options! Bikini line, full bikini, Brazilian, French double loop with a somersault? I admit, I know next to nothing about this fascinating topic. If you want some great info from the hive, check out this thread on the Weddingbee boards—veeerrry edgificational.

To help me further parse the different bikini waxing services, I checked out this little article, which had the following tidbits (all quoted from the article):

  • Regular Bikini Wax: Removes the hair outside the panty line.
  • Full Bikini Wax: Takes the sides of the bikini line deeper than a regular bikini wax, and can also include waxing some hair on top to make a more defined ‘triangle’ area, or trimming down the hair left shorter.
  • French Bikini Wax: Takes all hair off the in the front (except a small strip) and continues to right before the back. It doesn’t take hair off from the back like a Brazilian (see below). [edit: I think there must be a typo in this, not my problem]
  • Brazilian Bikini Wax: Takes all hair off the bikini line, front all the way to the back (yes by your bum). Sometimes a small strip or triangle is left in the front.

Do you have any preferences/recommendations for hair removal?

And for those who have not tried waxing before, I leave you with this image:

Hehe. I’m just kidding. It won’t be like that. I *promise*.

I prefer waxing. It’s quite painful but it last a lot longer!

As Mrs. Cheese said, northern Brazil hurts the worst on a Brazilian!

The one thing I’ve found though, is that waxing just once isn’t helpful. It’s better to either just shave, or continue getting waxed!

I too am planning on doing this! The one thing that has me nervous is trying an underarm wax (ouch). I have never done that before but thought since we will be honeymooning in Aruba for a week, it would be worth it. Has anyone done that before? Should I be nervous?

The thought of waxing makes me cringe and since I’m going to Disney World, I won’t be walking around in a bikini all the time. Shaving works fine for me :)

And your puggy is sooooo cute!

I’ve been a devoted Brazilian fan for years - once you get used to it, you’ll have trouble going back. So, Brazilian is my vote.

I would say leave yr arms alone unless you’re gonna keep doing it. the arm hairs aren’t gonna be visible. happy waxing!

I’m a cosmetologist, so I’ve had oodles of experience waxing others and myself.

Have you ever tried waxing? It varies different people, and I would suggest trying it now if you haven’t. You don’t want to have a surprise reaction and be red/bumpy on the honeymoon!
Also, (this might be to your FIs dismay) you’d need to let the hair grow for 3-4 weeks for it to be the most effective. Because hair grows in stages, this would assure that you have longer lasting results.
This is not saying you can’t wax after just a week’s worth of growth, it just wouldn’t last as long.

I started getting laser hair removal (BIG ouch!) a year ago, but boy am I glad I did! I always have that annoying “shadow” (especially in the armpit region) the day after I shave! Talk about frustrating. But soon enough I won’t have to worry about that anymore, and I’m soooo looking forward to it.

@cakey110: underarm wax is not that bad … it’s like plucking your eyebrows but all the pain is happening at the same time ;)
It’s not that bad!!!

Good luck!!! :)

Also a devoted Brazilian, that is my vote too. I suggest going a couple times before your actual honeymoon, as @msashleymarie pointed out, once is less helpful. It definitely lasts longer, looks better (no razor burn or bumps that shaving can cause) and one less thing to worry about on the honeymoon!

had it all done yesterday. Yes, it is painful, but the results are worth it.

Have you thought about laser? It’s actually more cost-effective if you take the long-term perspective.

Oh and also…
if you wax your arms, when it grows out it isn’t bad at all. It’s not the same as it growing back after you shave.
I’ve waxed my arms 2 or 3 times out of boredom, (my arm hair looks pretty identical to yours) and it seems like I was hair free for 1-2 months. And I didn’t even notice when it did grow back. It’s not prickly or anthying of that sort.
So if you’re feeling daring-go for it! ;)

@pren79
Laser is amazing! But she wouldn’t have time to get the full effect if her wedding is in March =/

@lindz221: @ColorCoated: it’s a fascinating subject, isn’t it? so many options!
@msicequeen: definitely going with the waxing. i don’t really want to worry about shaving during the honeymoon!
@msashleymarie: after the honeymoon, i’ll probably just slouch back into shaving.
@cakey110: glad msicequeen could answer your question! i haven’t had my underarms waxed.
@Baked Potato: thanks for noticing the pug!
@KateL: i’ve heard this many a time. makes me veerryy curious…
@mrspaetz: i’m with you–forget the arms!
@FutureMrsBaird: thanks for all the great info! maybe i’ll work my way up to lasering one day!

I’m with FutureMrsBaird — I decided to ante up the funds and start on the laser hair removal. I’ve always had thick, stubborn hair. I used to wax whenever I was really angry at my hair lol… I also have that stubborn shadow that makes it look like you still have to shave even if you’re clean as a whistle.
It actually feels like rubber bands snapping on your skin… it doesn’t hurt for long, but the process of underarms, legs and full brazillian takes nearly 2 hrs and so it’s repeated pinches. As she explained, hair grows in stages, so i’m finally seeing bare patches where hair is no longer growing back and it’s pretty exciting. I personally feel it’s worth the pain and money investment, and I’m looking forward to my hair free wedding day!
SO: my recommendations on hair removal? Until I’m done with my laser package, I can’t fully recommend it but I’ve already seen great results for the 3 treatments I’ve had. But I definitely recommend waxing over shaving.

@FutureMrsBaird: I’m considering laser removal, how painful is it? Note, I am used to the pain from waxing but I just want to get an idea how much more pain I have to endure if I were to get laser.

I’ve never waxed, only shaved! And I had never ever known someone who shaved or waxed their arms until I went to grad school and all THREE of my roommates shaved their arms…Wierdness!
