Mrs. Pretzel's Picture
Mrs. Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
About Mrs. Pretzel

It’s Lent in the Pretzel house and this means giving something up for 40 days until Easter. When I was a kid I would give up candy because between you and me, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. But, the real purpose of “giving something up” is personal sacrifice, which if it’s candy—isn’t much of a sacrifice for me. This year Mr Pretzel and I did something unthinkable…

Pretzel modification of this image

We gave up beer. Serious sacrifice. We’re hanging in there, but we have beer on the brain. What better time to tackle our favors.

No, we’re not giving homemade beer—the non-beer drinkers and underage guests wouldn’t appreciate homemade beer like we do. Since one of our favorite pastimes is cooking, Mr P and I decided to give our guests homemade beer bread mix. Our guest will just have to add 12 oz of their favorite beer to our delicious mix and bake.

Check it out!

Ingredients in layers, packaged up all pretty.

Since I don’t have a “signature” recipe, we’re trying out different online recipes. This one includes cornmeal, brown sugar, Parmesan cheese and pepper flakes. Yummmmm. We had to give it a test drive, of course!

A simple equation for our guests

It was yummy but we’re not 100% sold yet and are still searching for the perfect recipe.

Are you making your own edible favors? Where did you find your recipe?

PS: If you are worried we won’t make it all 40 days, don’t worry—we did this last year and survived. Mr P also lost 10 lbs last year. Sadly I didn’t drop a pound. Booo!

You can do it! Whenever Mr. DG gives up beer, he drops five or ten pounds like instantly. It’s so weird how it can have such a big impact on guys and absolutely none on us!

How did you test it out if you aren’t drinking beer?

Cute idea!
We’re doing beer, it’s something we love so it makes sense. And for the underage we’re doing Apple Cider. =)

Gooooo Pretzels! You can do it! I just gave up drinking for the month of March (not for Lent, just for my love handles) and it’s so not fun :(

All the girls on here post such good looking food! I want a recipe section just to find it all!

I gave up caffeine this year, same as last year. However it’s a lot harder this year because my wedding is 2 weeks after Easter!

I made a beer bread mix for my brother for Christmas this year. I used this recipe http://www.recipelink.com/mf/31/2406 and it got rave reviews. It’s almost like a cornbread though because of so much cornmeal. I highly recommend the onion flakes!

Cool idea. I’ve never heard of bread made with beer in it. Could you share the recipe you settle on with the hive so we can try making it? Although, I probably shouldn’t eat an entire loaf of bread like that by myself. :)

Wow, I am impressed. That is not something I’d want to give up! I gave up Facebook for Lent again this year, which is always a really positive thing for me. The beer bread is a fantastic idea for a favor, love it. Let us know when you settle on a great recipe because I am totally going to steal it so we can devour it in our house too.

First, FAT TIRE! We don’t have that here in VA, and I try to buy a six pack of it anywhere I spot some. They sell it in NC, which I am so jealous of.

Anyways (mmm…fat tire), the Mr gave up hard alcohol last year and it was a doozy. Esp after Easter vigil when he went to the all you can drink margaherita place. Bad news bears, I have to say.
