Mrs. Hot Wings's Picture
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
About Mrs. Hot Wings

So although I didn’t have any luck at the Running of the Brides, I persisted. A bride’s got to have something to wear, after all. Going into wedding dress shopping, I knew I’d have issues with my body. Think Olive Oyl, but without the height. So while everyone thinks I should be happy to be thin, I’m most obsessed with my height. It’s my “thing”. So, I wanted to look tall.

Mr. Hot Wings swears he doesn’t read this… but seriously, if you’re checking in, this post is not for you darling man. Go Away!

I went to Bridals & Veils in San Diego with Mama Hot Wings. It was early on in our engagement and I was pretty certain I wanted a mermaid-like dress. But I had a problem with every dress. They were all pretty, but I felt like there was something I wanted to change about all of them. After our first trip, these were the dresses in the running.

(1) Anjolique 1001. She is pretty, but I really wanted a sweetheart neckline. I was also not happy with how the break looked on my petite frame. They couldn’t guarantee that it would fit me properly in my size.

(2) Allure 8505. She is also very pretty. I thought she was too sparkly for an outdoor August wedding. Mama Hot Wing loves the sparkliness. Again, I had issues with the break of the mermaid skirt.

At the end of the day, I couldn’t commit. So I left. I would have gone back for the Anjolique dress, but she was discontinued a couple weeks after I tried her on. Just my luck.

I returned to Chicago and continued internet searching.

And then I saw Agadir by Cymbeline online and about fell out of my computer chair. O.M.G. I wanted her so badly. SOO badly! I was in full out lust mode and had to try her on. I found a shop in Chicago, found a friend to go with me, and went straight in. She was beautiful, no doubt. But my lack of endowments (i.e., no boobs) didn’t look right in this dress. I was pretty sad.

This is when I got really disappointed. I called Mama Hot Wings in utter frustration. Nothing fit me properly. I’ve got the body of a 10 year old kid. I’m short, have no boobs, no hips—I’m a straight stick.

Did you have issues with dress shopping, too? What’d you do to get past it?

Oh no, I know you’ll find something you love, if you haven’t already. I did have some trouble with dress shopping, but eventually found something great.

I’m exactly a stick too - but a tall stick. None of those necklines would have worked on me thanks to a plunge or a sweetheart or a slight V scoop.

I ended up with a 2007 San Patrick “River”.

The color on this site is really ugly, but the neck line was straight across and had a little bit of a scoop under the cleavage area, which made it actually work very well and make it look like I had boobs, without that awkward “you have no middle cleavage” moment.

We are probably pretty similar, size wise. I am a size 2, and am 5′0 exactly. I ended up with a mermaid style gown. The trick for me was find a designer to do the hollow to hem measurement. I love my gown, and can’t wait to wear it! I can’t wait to see what you choose!
I don’t know that I look tall in my dress, but oh well. Everyone knows I’m short anyway, and that’s what heels are for :)

We’re very similar body type!! Very skinny, 5′5″, no boobage.
I too loved all the lace dresses but realized early on that it just would not work on my body type. OF course I still had to go try some one. I went into bridal stores with a very open mind and let the consultants pull dresses for me along with the dresses MOH & I pulled off the rack. My dress is actually one that a bridal consultant pulled for me. It’s something MOH & I would NEVER have pulled off the rack for me. But it is fabulous on my skinny frame! Gives me curves in the all the right places I never knew I had! Mine was more of a trumpet.

@silverbrooke: That’s really pretty. I did end up liking a San Patrick dress too at one point. I totally agree with the no middle cleavage thing. It makes me feel like a kid.

@Lindsay12.31.2010: haha.. I thought that too. Everyone knows I’m short, had to just accept it and hear heels.

OMG, I have the same delimma as you! I’m also petite (and flat) so it’s hard for me to find a dress. A lot of the dresses that I tried on looks like I’m swimming in it or floating on a cloud… or worse…. playing dress up! I’m not sure what style/material you are looking for but for me, I finally found the perfect style after watching an old episode of Friends (Monica’s wedding dress). My only problem now is finding a similar dress at the stores.
Good luck with your search!!!

Keep us posted!!! :)

I’m 5′2 and barely 100lbs. Did you look at Claire Pettibone gowns? That is who I am wearing and they are perfect for small gals and the materials are so light and flowy it looks like you are wearing the dress and not the dress is wearing you. Also-I like being flat chested. i think small boobs are seXXY. my dress is really low cut and looks great and i’m a 34A.

@msicequeen: Ooo that’s a good dress! I loved Monica’s bm dresses too.

@flamingred: I really love Claire Pettibone dresses and they weren’t the right vibe I was going for. I do agree with you on the sexy factor though. I’ve gotten away with some pretty awesome low cut tops/dresses before. But for wedding gowns, my mom would have freaked. So I’m sure the low cut will make an appearance for the b-party :)

You’ll find something that works for your body type soon, just need to keep looking. I found my dress at the runnning of the brides, it’s a pronovias by san patrick. So happy I didn’t spend thousands on the dress.

I hear you on the short front: dresses can tend to look unproportional. It’s no better when you have boobs, believe you me!

I am 5 feet tall and pretty skinny. I wore the Allure dress in size 2 for my wedding. They measured me for the gown and made it custom to fit my height. I loved it and, though I was slightly worried about the proportions when I ordered it, it turned out fabulous!

Good luck finding something that works for you!

I too wanted a mermaid dress, but found that a trumpet was more appropriate for my body type (5′2″ and 34A). When you find your dress, ask them if they can do hollow to hem and order it in Petite. It’ll make things more proportional to your body.

I had problems because I *do* have boobs and I’m tall. Sometimes dresses were way too small up top and/or were too short and just looked silly. I hope you found something that you love!

I had issues with dress shopping at first. The first salon I went to was a dud. I was so scared I wouldn’t find anything I liked!
I tried on a beautiful lace gown much like the Cymbeline one you posted, and alas I had the same problem, not enough boobage to make it look good-decent even! Bummer.

Then I visited Priscilla of Boston and boy did I get over the body issues. I ended liking more than one dress!! I ended up with this one:
http://media.preownedweddingdresses.com/images/dresses/11660//365×450//Priscilla-of-Boston-Ball-Gown-4306-Ivory-2009-46819.jpg
because it is perfect for our wedding (and I love it!) But let me tell you-I also loved Melissa Sweet’s “Saffron”:

If I was getting married again it would be in that dress. Idk if it’s your cup of tea, but if you end up going to a salon that has it-try it on! I think it would look wonderful on you!

I can relate! I may have a C cup, but I’m 5′ and constantly get mistaken for a 12 year old. It’s awful!
