Not a Fan of Pink

March 5th, 2010 @ 2:23 pm by Mrs. Lace

No offense. I know a lot of people who love pink. In fact, I knew a girl who LOVED pink. EVERYTHING had to be pink. Pink shoes, pink shirts, pink purses. Before this, I never had anything against pink although it wasn’t my favorite color. But after I met this girl, I started to dislike pink. I think it’s because she’d make a huge deal about how she needed someone’s help (usually a boy) and would ooh and ahh over the boy who’d help her. It made me want to puke. I’m a pretty independent person and if I can do it myself, I will. In fact, it’s difficult for me to ask people for help. So, I think that association with pink made me hate the color.

It’s mellowed out since then. I recently even bought a pink shirt. The shirt itself was super cute and only came in pink so I bought it anyway. However, this past week, I found a reason to HATE pink.

I’m a teacher and I recently discovered that I will be receiving a pink slip. I have been teaching in my current district for four years. Last year, I managed to slip by and hung on for dear life to my job. But this year, I am not so lucky. Now, a pink slip doesn’t necessarily mean that I will be laid off, but that the district can legally lay me off. Since we’re unionized, they lay off not based off performance, dedication or talent, but seniority.

I have mixed feelings.

First, I’m mad. I am being laid off because of my hire date and not because of my dedication to my students or passion and talent for teaching. Second, I’m worried because after June, I won’t receive a paycheck anymore. By the way, did I mention that I am planning a wedding for June? Also, once I move in with Mr. Lace, we have a huge mortgage payment to pay for that we needed my salary for. Last, I’m curious if I’m being steered in a different direction. I obviously won’t be able to find another teaching position in this economy so I’ll have to find a job in another field until schools are hiring again. Which field? What will I do?

As if wedding planning isn’t overwhelming enough, now I have to wait to see if I’ll still have a paycheck after June.

Is anyone going through a difficult job or financial situation in the midst of wedding planning? How are you coping?

Aw, Lace, I’m so sorry to hear that. I can only imagine how stressful that would be. I hope it works out for the best. *hugs*

my wedding is in september and I work for the federal government. Their fiscal year ends in sept. Because of this cruddy economy my contract will not be renewed next fiscal year unless there is a miracle and money rains from the sky, so I can relate. Get married and lose my paycheck in the same month! We don’t have any mortgage or anything like that hanging over our heads, but we still gotta pay rent. good luck with your job search, and perhaps you might not get cut!

So sorry to hear that…but don’t give up hope! I am from CA and I have several friends who are teachers who were laid off due to lack of seniority…and most them have been able to get jobs at charter schools, so you probably will be able to as well…and not to get political, but to get political….the downside is that the reason that teachers are being laid off in CA is in order to boost the charter schools which are often owned by corporations and have turned into money making opportunities as opposed to educational opportunities…but keep your head up! not all is lost…there are teaching jobs in california…its just a matter of where you want to go!

I’m so sorry lace. I can’t relate on the job level but our wedding has had some major financial woes too. We went from my parents paying for it, to us paying for all of it because my parents financial situation hit an all time low. The economy is just miserable still. Hugs lace! Hugs and more hugs!

well there’s always unemployment right?
My dad lost his job during my wedding planning and I really wanted to give the money back to my parents that they had gave us for the wedding day. But they wouldn’t take it back, even if it meant they wouldn’t be able to make a house payment.
And I know the job market out there sucks, but it is worth it to at least look for a job in the area you are teaching now. There might be something open!

Good Luck! In my situation my fiancee cannot work until we are married but with this economy I cannot imagine what work he is even going to get!

That’s awful! I’ve always hated the “seniority” pink slip rule. It’s unfair when crappy teachers get to keep their job and awesome ones get fired, all because of how long they’ve been with the district.
Good luck!

awww, that sucks. i have so many friends who are teachers, and it sucks that you get a pink slip because you’re newer. some of them get rehired every school year, and i know a few who just ended up subbing. hubby was laid off when we were planning our wedding, but got a new job a month before our wedding date, and he was able to take off for the honeymoon. hope it works out in your situation. and i know a lot of state employees who are getting hit hard with this CA budget cuts. both my sister and hubby’s brother are state employees.

Good luck Lace–sorry that this has happened. My friend is going through it–for the second time! She was hired back for this year, and told that she will be pink slipped again, but that she has a good chance of being hired back again. It’s a bit of a roller coaster.

Again, good luck!

I am in the *same* situation in Virginia. I teach high school music. They are looking to cut the elementary band/string programs in the county - which would mean firing about 150 music teachers. Those who remain would be getting relocated to different positions.

Here is the kicker though - I’m a second year teacher, but I do HS. That doesn’t matter - they will keep a grumpy old elementary teacher with tenure who has been teaching K-5 for the last 15 years and put her into my high school position, and fire me.

It burns my ass that I spend so much heart and time and life into this choir program, and I’ll loose it to some woman who may have never taught high school choir, may not be a singer or a pianist, and might not even like or care about the job. But because of time in the system, and not merit, she gets to stay and I get kicked.

They didn’t really hire any new people this school year, so those of us in our first 3 years are still on the chopping block. It really, really, sucks, and I can see why they do it this way, but that doesn’t make it any fairer to those of us who are not tenured.

We are also scared of this and are up in the air. I’m kind of up a creek since I didn’t put in graduate applications this year. I really feel like I need three years of teaching before starting graduate conducting study. But if one of us gets fired, it may be time to make the move to NY that we are planing to do eventually and hope for the best.

I am *so* here to talk or vent over a e-cup of coffee.

I work for a school district in California as well (but I am a contract classified employee). If you don’t mind sharing, I noticed that you live in Pasadena– do you happen to work for LAUSD?

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I have been freelancing for the past year and it’s been really difficult for us. My fiance just accepted a job in Canada (!) but is thinking of filing bankruptcy before we go so it will be easier for us (he got stuck with a huge amount of debt from his last marriage, don’t even get me started). It’s going to be 2-3 times more expensive for us to live when we move and I’m pretty worried about it. Maybe it’ll be good to branch out for a while…have you looked at private schools? Send resumes even if they don’t have job postings.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I am a firm believer in things happening for a reason though. I am sure that in the end, everything will turn out all right. I wish you all the best!

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. Sadly, I know a bunch of teachers in the same situation as you. I;m not a teacher, but I too am unemployed (I’m freelancing but it’s not permanent) so I feel you on the fear of planning a wedding while not employed. We’re also buying a home so it’s definitely scary, but I’m determined to get through it as best as possible. Good luck to you!

I’m so sorry. I just got my credential last June, and trying to find a job in LA/OC has been impossible. I’m subbing in the meantime, but it is so unpredictable. I wish you the best, and hope you have better luck than me!

I’m in the same boat! I am so sorry to hear that it’s affecting you as it is for me. I am not even probationary yet, and last year I was saved since I am support staff we weren’t affected but not this year. I will be receiving a dreaded pink slip right before my wedding, great gift right? I hope and wish the best for you. Keep us posted, and I really hope that positions can be salvaged. What they’re doing with education is CA is tragic. And on the union thing, I agree, it is so infuriating how some don’t put any effort, yet they are “saved” because of their seniority. I hate this system.

Firstly, tons of hugs for Miss Lace. Secondly, I know someone in the educational world in CA is going to realize what a jewel you’ll be to their school and “sweep you off your feet” in no time!! And lastly, more hugs because you can never have enough of those!! *HUGS*

Ohhh my heart goes out to you. I’m a fourth year teacher too, and would be crushed especially because it’s not even factoring your (i’m sure excellent) performance. I will be leaving my teaching job and moving for my fiance, and am terrified about new job prospects and being unemployed, so I am right there with you. Something will turn up! Good luck :)
