Let Them Eat Cake? (Take One)

March 7th, 2010 @ 2:50 pm by Mrs. Hot Dog

I am uber-hungry, so I’d thought I’d talk about dessert options at the reception…

At the beginning of the planning process, I found this adorable picture of an alternative “cake”:

Cupcakes! They are so fun and fresh and would’ve gone really well. IF we hadn’t changed our venue, theme, colors, and just about every other aspect of the wedding!

Since we’re having it on the ranch now, we wanted something a little more traditional. I started scouring for simple, rustic wedding cakes and found these beauties:

Let Them Eat Cake? (Take One) : wedding cake cheyenne Flower

I am LOVING the flowers on this one! Source

Let Them Eat Cake? (Take One) : wedding cake cheyenne Cakesta This cake stand is to die for! And I love that the cake looks homemade! Source

Let Them Eat Cake? (Take One) : wedding cake cheyenne Ribbed

The grooves on each layer are totally earthy and gorgeous! Source

*swoon*

BUUT, then I remembered something. I don’t even really like cake. Neither does Mr HD. Ruh roh.

If you and/or your FI doesn’t like cake, are you having a cake alternative? Or are you sticking with tradition and going with cake anyway?

My guy and I didn’t want a traditional cake, but my mom insisted, as did my stepmom, who wanted to buy it for us, so we gave in. There are so many battles in wedding planning, we didn’t think this one was worth fighting for - so cake it is. Our cake is gorgeous and fits our theme, so you know, it’s all good.

If we had had it our way, we would be having a dessert bar of chocolate mousse, fruit tarts and brownies. Sigh…

Pies would be an awesome alternative for a rustic wedding. I’m envisioning pies with a lattice top especially, or perforated tops of apple pies. I think you could also do quite a bit with cupcakes if you like those. Especially stacked on different height logs like the log cake stand you have pictured above.

Those cakes are gorgeous! I’m not a huge cake fan, but for some reason I love cupcakes - so that’s what we’re doing!

We don’t really like cake either, but we went on a tasting and tried thee most delicious cakes ever, and those became our wedding cake! (Raisin-less carrot cake and banana cake with cream cheese filling and Italian buttercream frosting…mmmmm). Go on a few tastings and try something other than vanilla or chocolate cake-you might surprise yourself with something you like.

We’re having a pie bar! So excited. But we will be getting a little cake for the two of us to cut.

We’re not a fan of cake either so we are going to have a couple different flavors of cheesecake. I wanted to do a brownie dessert, but I thought that would be too plain.

A friend of mine doesn’t care much for cake either so they had ice cream instead!

We’re having donuts arranged on a tower. Not only are they super-affordable, which helps on our tight budget, but they’re from an AMAZING hometown bakery and are delicious. We’re really excited. My mom, however, is horrified by the idea.

brownies brownies brownies brownies!!! oh, that’s just me chanting brownies over and over. if it were solely up to me, I’d have a brownie bar with different homemade brownies contributed from our friends and family. but apparently, everyone in the world thinks we should have something more traditional. to that i say…”have we met???”

but the rustic cakes are cute, i like the earthy stripes in the frosting too! good luck!

We are having homemade wedding cupcakes. We are also doing a fully homemade dessert bar: lemons bars, brownies, chocolate/peanut butter chip cookies and our venue offers a make your own soft serve ice cream machine. I don’t love cake but I LOVE cupcakes.

I love dessert - so we are having cake and a dessert bar!! haha! But I have been to weddings where they had cake plus an alternative like gelato or candy. So you should have what you want for dessert! You can always have a small cake for the cutting or just feed one another your choice of dessert.

i’ve been noticing alot of “cheese wheel” cakes for people who don’t like cake, they have cheeses set up to look like cake with fresh fruit and good wine, it can be done on a wooden stand like the one in your picture and i think it would look pretty cute. also some people have a desert bar or, sometimes locally made tarts. You can do anything, you don’t “HAVE” to do anything! For my wedding we are having cupcakes because we have a local cupcake maker who is amazing.

ICE CREAM!! I am looking into ice cream cakes/sundae bar for our July wedding.
I have heard coldstone creamery can do it and they quoted me $3/pp!!! However, I have to find out if the one near our wedding venue does catering. But don’t ask me about logistics…I’m still working that out.
The Honey and I have never been ones for cake, and cheesecake is expensive. This is our happy medium, and fits perfectly with our laidback luncheon.

FI and I have pretty much never met a baked good we didn’t like, so we pretty easily set on having a beautiful big old cake (well maybe not so big; we’re only serving 60 folks) at our reception. I love the rustic looks that you posted! But, there are a billion ideas for non-cake sweets at a wedding, and they are getting increasingly popular these days. The pie buffet, sundae buffet, candy buffet, mini-desserts buffet, the list goes on. How about a cotton candy machine? Soft serve? Tarts? So many possibilities.

There are actually very beautiful fake cakes that you can rent. The caterer just brings out pieces of cake from that inexpensive cake you got at Costco!

I want to do a pie reception line. Like, several options of pie, a cute apron for the bride and a bride and groom serving pie to all the guests.

I’m not really a cake person, because I can’t stand icing. To me it is super sweet and it just makes me bleh. I just had my birthday and I didn’t get any cake, which is good because well, I don’t like cake!

I think we’re just going to go the traditional route, especially since the Misses loves cake! I’ll just…. scrape off whatever icing/fondant is on it and eat the actual “cake” part.
