My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). About Mrs. Jellyfish

Flower Dog

March 8th, 2010 @ 1:59 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

Exactly one year before our wedding, something happened that changed the Jelly household forever. We adopted a puppy! We started the process just 2 weeks before and he came home with us on our 1 year pre-wedding-aversary! He’s a rescue pup, so we’re not sure about his exact breed, but we’re told he’s part-pug, part-dachshund (and possibly part-basenji).

This is what he looked like when we adopted him at 10 weeks old. (Photo courtesy of Smiley Dog Rescue)

Initially, I wanted to name him Barney after our favorite How I Met Your Mother character, Barney Stinson:

“Stinson… I am your namesake.” (Source)

But Mr. Jelly shot that down because he it reminded him too much of the big purple dinosaur. Then I said, “What about Stinson?” That’s when it clicked. Not only would he be named after our favorite sitcom character, but his name would hold a special meaning as well – Stinson Beach is where Mr. Jelly proposed, after all.

We took Stinson to his beach for Valentine’s Day this year.

Stinson has grown from an adorable puppy into a wonderful dog, and he’s made our lives so much richer. He feels like such a big part of out little family that we can’t imagine our wedding without him. Which led us to wonder… could we train him to walk down the aisle holding a basket of flowers in his mouth?

Yes, that’s right: we’re thinking of having a flower dog. While our two adorable nephews will be the ring bearers, we don’t know any little girls suited to the task of flower girl. And though little Stinson isn’t a girl, we don’t think he’d mind being a part of our special day. We called our venue and they do allow dogs to be part of the ceremony, as long as someone takes the dog to a hotel or residence after the ceremony. So if we can find someone willing to miss part of cocktail hour to transport Stinson back to the hotel, and if we can train him to walk down the aisle, we may just have ourselves a little flower dog!

Are you involving your pet in your wedding?

OMG!! He is SO flippin’ cute!!! His facial characteristics remind me of when our pup was actually a pup!!! SO cute!
Our “pup” is WAY too rambunctious to be a flower dog! =(

I love it! We thought about including our girls in the ceremony, but since we have to travel down there and our Inn does not allow animals (other than at the outdoor ceremony sites anyway), the girls will be staying home.

Instead we’re planning on bringing them with us for our engagement photo session, which will be made into the guest book. And if we decide to do the wine bottle favors, we’ll have them on the labels.

I love Stinson!!!!! That’s so cool that your venue will let you use him! I hope he’s a good boy and learns to walk down the aisle! Or you can always have someone “escort” him, haha!

Now THAT’S a great name! Gotta love HIMYM. Is his middle name Legen- what for it - dary?

We’re having our lab, Bella, as our “flower pup” and ring bearer. It has so much more meaning to us that way.

Just trying to figure out what to do after. Too bad she just can’t hang out with us at the reception! But ehhh… she’s a bit of a jumper. That has train-wreck written ALL over it.

@shesgotchutzpah: His middle name is Pup. His full name is Stinson P. Worthington III. It’s kind of an inside joke between us, but that’s seriously his full name.

HE IS SOOOO CUUUTE!!! Definitely train him to do it - our two dogs were our ring bearers! People were laughing hysterically at them because they made the funniest faces going down the aisle. We still like to have “conversations” about what they were thinking lol “Hey a new place! Ooh look there’d my daddy OOH BISCUIT!” haha

@KellyV: Did your dogs walk down by themselves, or did you have someone escort them? I’m thinking of having a friend escort him…

Too cute! I think that is such a great idea! I would love to have my dog involved in my ceremony but that is not going to happen because our ceremony is in a Roman Catholic Church and they only allow pets during the one pet mass that they have each year. Sadness.

We named our rescue lab Barney, well technically Barnabus, after everybody’s favorite playboy. I love HIMYM!

@Miss Jelly - we had a friend walk them. They could have done it on their own, but for time sake (theyd both have stopped to say hi to EVERYONE) we had someone escort them. But I’ve seen a dog do it on their own. Its just overwhelming for them to see SO many people and not want pets :) Especially when you have 2 hams like we did lol

Cute! I LOVE HIMYM ( I didn’t make up the acronym, but my friends use it all the time). My favorite episode is the Swarley episode. Cute name! Cute dog!

We’re having both of our dogs involved in the wedding though we haven’t yet worked out logistics. Because I’m too big a pushover to train them to do much more than be potty trained and sit (which only works 75% of the time anyway), it’s unlikely they’ll be able to walk unescorted. We have my nephew as the RB and 2 of FI’s cousins as FG, so we’ll prolly have one of the little girls (the older of the 2) hold their leashes and walk them down. After the ceremony, we’ll have an area penned off on the farm for them to hang out since they also can’t be trusted not to beg for food and are too small to risk getting trampled. Once the party starts to break up and it’s just the close friends and family at the bonfire pit, I’m sure they’ll be out and about with us again. I’m already trying to decide what they’ll wear…
