Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!
About Mrs. Jellyfish

My friend Nancy and I recently attended the “Wedding Day Details” class at Paper Source. It was a lot of fun, and a great marketing tool for the store – after they teach you to use all their cool stuff, they give you 10% off that day, so of course, I ended up buying a couple items (a rounded corner punch and a 1/8 inch punch, in case you were wondering). The class lasted 2 hours, and was broken up into three 35-minute stations, with the extra time used for shopping.

The first station taught us how to make table tents. We made the following 3 tents:

I think all of them are neat in their own way…not sure if we are going to use any of these designs, though. Which one is your favorite?

One of the tools I got to use for the first time is the Xyron!

I had never heard of this crafting tool until I started reading wedding blogs, but it’s a sticker maker – basically it adds adhesive to anything you can slide through it. It’s AWESOME. I’m going to have to get myself one of those!!! We used it to attach adhesive to the wrapping paper on the table tent with the number 5 on it (behind the green band).

The next station we went to was the menus/place cards/programs station. We learned how to make several types of programs. I really like the way the green one came out – we used special “watermark” ink to stamp a subtle design over the writing. Sadly, we ran out of time and I was only able to make one place card – and it didn’t come out that great.

The last station was favor boxes. Again, we ran out of time here, too (are you listening, Paper Source?). We learned how to decorate a pillow box and a Chinese-take-out style box. I really like the way the pillow box came out, and might make those for our wedding (using our color scheme of course… if we ever decide what that is!).

So that’s it! It wasn’t anything too crazy, but it was fun to learn some new techniques and talk “wedding” with other engaged ladies. Oh, and I also won a prize in the raffle! Yep, I won the Summer Magnolia Paper Kit! I’m not sure what I’ll do with them, but they will be very pretty!

Let me know if you think any of the things above are worth recreating for our wedding! I want to hear what your favorites are.

I thought about taking one of these classes, but they are a little on the pricey side. Thanks for the recap, very useful to see what you learned. I like the watermark stamp a lot.

i agree…super pricey, especially for the materials. I vote Etsy…so much more affordable in the long run, and better quality

I am in no way trying to be sarcastic here but I am wondering how the xyron compares to standard double stick tape? I would definitely consider buying one since I hope to do a lot of DIYs down the road but I thought I’d get your opinion??
Thanks! :-)

@beth1125: It’s hard to say, as I’ve only used it that one time. I think the benefit of Xyron over double-stick tape is when you’re trying to ensure that a larger piece of paper (though still small enough to slide through the Xyron) is evenly adhered. You would have to use many small pieces of double stick tape to achieve the uniform stick you get with the Xyron. I’d advise using a 50% off coupon from Michael’s if/when you buy the Xyron!

Thanks so much for posting! I’ve always wondered what events at Paper Source were like just like Kendra. Love that you took so many photos. Thanks!

On a side note…I can never leave that place without purchasing something. I bought tons of wedding paper there, and even the ribbon for our cake!

I am insanely jealous that you have a paper source there (green with envy i tell ya lol!!) we have a scrapbooking store here that is minutes away but they are a bit on the pricey size and wal-mart is equi-distance away (guess which one wins….)
