The Wedding Weekend

March 8th, 2010 @ 10:50 am by Mrs. Starfish

I have always dreamed of going on a mini vacation with all of my closest loved ones. My maternal grandmother initially instilled the idea in me. Before she passed away, she dreamed of having all of our family members go on a trip together. This family included her 8 children, their spouses, 25 grandkids, their significant others, and a few great grandkids. When she first brought it up, it was supposed to be a week-long trip, a cruise, a trip to Disney, or a trip to our roots in Ireland.

After some family discussions, and indecision, the week-long trip was demoted to a weekend in New Hampshire. She wanted to bring her family to the Mount Washington Hotel, where her husband, my grandfather had worked in his early years, for a long weekend. Again, after family discussion and indecision, the trip never happened.

My grandmother never lived to see her family getaway come to life, but it’s finally going to happen.

Both me and my cousin are planning semi-destination weddings in New England. This upcoming August, my cousin and his fiance are getting married in New Hampshire overlooking the White Mountains, then in October, we’ll all be together again Newport.

I have been dreaming of a family getaway since my grandmother came up with the idea, and I’m even more excited that this getaway will include all of my family. Mr. Starfish and I are excited that we will have all of our closest friends and families together for a whole weekend. After years of dating and telling friends stories of each others lives, our worlds will finally collide in a fun-packed weekend. We are so excited about the weekend, we opted not to do an immediate honeymoon and will extend our stay in Newport in case anyone else stays in town (with a few days to ourselves, of course).

In reality, we will be there for just about a week. Some guests have already indicated they will be spending a few extra days in Newport.

During the course of the weekend we are hoping to come up with an extra event to show our guests our appreciation for their traveling, and to make the trip more enjoyable.

So far we have tossed around a few ideas like a night on the town in Newport, a morning after brunch, a pizza party, a softball game, or maybe wine tasting. We have yet to look into most of these ideas. Some are more ideal for smaller crowds, while others would be fun with a big group.

Keeping in mind we are on a budget, do you have any fun ideas for events with the guests? Are you planning a wedding weekend?

That sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve been to weddings where the event is an entire weekend. It was a blast. Even the most mundane activities are fun in a huge group of your closest family and friends! Unfortunately, we’re leaving for our honeymoon the morning after the wedding so we won’t be able to do this. Can’t wait to hear about your trip though!

That’s nice. We had a destination wedding, but somehow the stress of travels seemed to bring out VERY nasty streaks in certain people. I would say just be prepared for some drama, just in case. Eeek. All the best!

We are doing optional weekend events as well at our Cape May, NJ wedding.
Friday: Crab crackin gathering at our favorite restaurant
Saturday morning: 5k beach run
Saturday night: Welcome gathering at local bar&grille
Sunday: Wedding
Monday: Farewell juice & bagels on the beach

Sunday and Mondays events are the only ones were are treating for. Since the events are optional, we don’t feel we need to treat for them.

this sounds so nice!
How about volley ball on the beach, or a kick ball game (takes a little less skill than softball, and in my opinion, is a LOT of fun!)?

Sounds like a great weekend in Newport! We are doing a BBQ/Picnic at a lake house on Friday evening for all of our guests and probably a brunch in the same place on Sunday morning before we leave for our B&B bike tour honeymoon in Vermont. Our wedding is at a vineyard so our guests will get the chance to enjoy a number of local wines as well.

how about a picnic combining a softball game and pizza? or, something like boat ride where people understand that they pay their way (mrs. avocado did a bunch of stuff like that for her wedding)?

I think a lawn game tournament would be amazingly fun! We’re going to set up stuff for our guests to use for the day of the wedding, including croquet, bocce, badminton, wiffle ball and a few others…

We’re doing the standard morning after breakfast at our semi-destination wedding on Long Beach Island, NJ. Several of our guests are staying for the weekend so I know we’ll have tons of fun! And we’re staying the week, as is at least 1 of my sisters. :-)

I think it’s a fantastic idea! I’m currently a little less that seven months away from my mini-destination wedding up in the White Mountains of NH! The festivities begin on Thursday night with a welcome dinner and bonfire…and then a day of hiking and exploring the next day! I CANNOT wait and totally agree that it’s such a perfect way to re-connect with friends and family all while celebrating such a wonderful time!!

@ Sarabande6: I love all your events and making them optional is a great idea!
@ Eriqua, volelyball is such a great idea! Our venue is across the street from the hotel and they have a volleyball court. I’ll have to look into this!
@ Miss Pug, I love the picnic idea and thanks for the Miss Avo tip, I’ll have to read her posts!
@ Miss Trail Mix, lawn games sounds awesome! I know the perfect place too! Another idea to look into :) esp. since I love bocce
@ LoriLori, where on LBI? LBI is one of my favorite places in the world! :)
@ Sarahd07 I love the activities your doing, they are so perfect for NH, I hope your doing smores at the bonfire! The hiking sounds so fun!

I love the idea of a wedding weekend- we’re doing the same thing! We’ve rented a ranch in Eastern WA for three nights and our plan is to pack the weekend with optional activities. We love to mountain bike, hike and fly fish so we’re going to do a little of all of those. We’ll also spend part of a day just hanging out along the river, which will be perfect as it gets HOT at our venue in the summertime. We’re also going to organize a game of golf for the golfers in our family, and have a potluck/ bbq one night with a pie bar. The wedding itself will be on a Sunday, and we’ll do a farewell brunch Monday morning. @ Miss Trail Mix, I love the idea of setting up lawn games during the bbq- or @eriqua, a kickball game sounds great! So many fun weddings on here!!!

You’re family sounds so familiar to mine - my mom has 7 brothers and sisters, and there are about 25 grandchildren!! We have a ball when we get together, and have been trying to plan a big vacation together!

I really enjoyed brunch the morning after our wedding, it was fun to see everyone after some sleep! My mom hosted it at the house she rented for the weekend, store bought OJ, fruit, etc. with homemade coffee cake and such she made ahead of time!

@Miss Starfish: Smores are the highlight of the bonfire! We’re making cute little smores kits to hand out to everyone as they arrive! ;)

You need to include the Cliff Walk in your weekend and maybe a mansion tour because that’s what everyone wants to do in NPT! Also, if Newport Storm Brewery is back in town (they are building a new one apparently) you should look into doing the brewery tour they offer on friday it’s low budget (free I think) and fun for locals and visitors alike. You could also do a boat tour, there are some nice ones that go out in the evening. I planned a conference in NPT a few years ago and feel like I should have more suggestions for group entertainment but all I can think of is the boat tour. Not for a group but, if you want to do something unique, there’s a place on Thames (toward the end) where you can take a glass blowing lesson - we made a Christmas ornament which could be a cool way to remember your wedding location.

it sounds like the activities you listed should be enough for the weekend. don’t forget you’re wedding as the capper! it’s a shame your grandmother was able to see the family vacation but i’m sure she’ll be on your family’s mind all weekend. :-)

We’re doing our semi-destination New England wedding in Bar Harbor Maine. The “official” events that we have planned so far are a hike, a golf game w/ my dad, drinks on Friday night, and a morning after brunch on Sunday. During the week leading up to the wedding we also hope to sea kayak, check out the local brewery, and do some more hiking with our guests who are planning on arriving in town extra early.

The White Mountains have a lot of great trails that are wonderful. My personal favorite is the Great Basin trail. It takes you through some of the most beautiful trails and ends with you finding some wonderful waterfalls.

In Newport, definitely do the Cliff Walk and see at least one of the Mansions. My personal favorite is Marble House. I know that the Breakers gets all the fame and it is beautiful but for some reason, I have always loved the Marble House. My own Nana used to take me to see the Mansions at different times of the year for the gardens.

Congratulations on your wedding and good luck!
