Tribute to a Groomsman

March 8th, 2010 @ 10:31 am by Mrs. Argyle

The second I saw this photo, I thought of one person and one person only: Argyle Groomsman A (AGA for short). Now, he’s not getting married, but the guy is from Texas.

I can remember one of the first stories he told me when he started his new job in New York (you read that right, he left Texas and moved to New York to work for an airline).

He had been working at this airline for about a month or so, wearing his cowboy boots each day to work, when someone finally told him it might be a good idea to buy a pair of dress shoes. I thought he was going to die. So, of course, when I saw that our photographer posted this photo, it immediately reminded me of how AGA loves his cowboy boots. I’m pretty sure if given the option, he’d wear them at the wedding!

What sort of fun memories do you have of your wedding party members? Are you close to your groomsmen?

FI and I went to the same high school, but we were in different grades and didn’t know each other. I actually grew up 4 doors down from one of his best friends, Groomsman R, and have known him (much) longer than FI has (since we were both in elementary school). We joke that GM R really should have been a BM, and I have all sorts of photos off us growning up since I was good friends with his sister and we all used to play together.

As for cowboy boots, FI and I are huge fans and having a country-themed rehearsal where we’re both wearing our boots and inviting everyone else to wear em if you got em!

Yep, Miss Stargazer is right. It’s also acceptable wedding attire for grooms and groomsmen to wear a tux from the waist up, black jeans, and black boots. We did not do that but I’ve seen it more than once.

Yep! It’s perfectlly acceptable to have a pair of really nice boots as “dress up shoes.”

@twalila: That’s a sweet story.

@Miss Pug: I’m quite okay with them, as the guys’ suits are light tan, so his brown cowboy boots would match just fine! I don’t think he’ll wear them though - even though I told him it’s ok!

They’re even socially acceptable to wear to work in corporate world!

I’ve got your groomsman’s problem in reverse - I’m from the straight-laced east coast, moved to Seattle, and just about burst out laughing at a job interview recently at a consulting firm where all five of my interviewers, all the way up to the COO, were in jeans. What am I supposed to do with my power-suit consulting uniforms?

@what2bee: It definitely depends on what part of the U.S. you’re in. Not all employers consider cowboy boots as dress boots.

@LittlestBirds: That’s funny. I had a similar reaction when I started working in advertising, but it’s pretty much the norm for us (the wearing jeans part).

Most of FH’s groomsmen (except his brother, who lives out of state) are at our apartment at least three nights a week. They’re here so much that they know where everything is in our kitchen, and our guinea pigs greet them when they come in the door. I feel almost as close to the guys as FH does, and I’m lucky he likes a girl that joins in on the video games and geeking out!

FI is wearing a lovely pair of black cowboy boots with his tux - they are the same shape and shine and color as the tux shoes, but they add in a lttle bit of his personality (and a couple of inches to his height). I think he’s going to look adorable :) I even have a BEAUTIFUL pair of Justins that I’m thinking of throwing on for the reception.

@Mattel: I love cowboy boots under a wedding dress!

@Miss Hamster: Absolutely - I’ve already told him several times, but not sure if he will or not.
