Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!

An Outfit for City Hall

March 9th, 2010 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

Once we made the decision to get legally married before the wedding, I began searching for a civil ceremony outfit. Hoping to emulate my mom’s stylish wedding day look, I originally wanted to wear a white skirt suit.

OK, I may have been inspired by this, too. (Source)

I soon learned, however, that a nice white skirt suit is hard to come by. Over the course of a few months, I must have tried on at least a dozen white suits but none of them fit right. Here were some of the better suits I considered (please ignore the bad photo quality – they were all taken using auto-timer!):

This Calvin Klein sheath dress with matching jacket is technically not a suit, but it had the structured look I was going for. It was on sale for only $45 at Macy’s, but I wasn’t in love with it. I thought the sleeves looked a little awkward on me, so I ended up returning it.

Mama Jelly found this suit at Macy’s but we quickly ruled it out because I didn’t really want to wear pants to the city hall wedding.

This Tahari suit seemed promising at first, but I really don’t like the look of jacquard on me. It reminded me of my grandmother’s tablecloths.

And those were the good ones! After many failed attempts at finding a white suit, I broadened my search to include cocktail-length white dresses. Here were the best white dresses that I found:

I found this adorable dress at Nordstrom.com. I love how it’s bridal yet casual at the same time. (Source)

This dress is also from Nordstrom.com, and it’s a little more casual and has a garden vibe to it. (Source)

I loved the neckline and bow detail on this David Meister dress from Saks (Source)

Which dress do you think I picked for my city hall wedding? Stay tuned to find out!

I hope you ended up with something you love!

P.S. every time I see a picture of Carrie in the skirt suit and remember the awesome dress that Big left her at the alter wearing, I get very sad.

Nordstrom has the BEST dresses!!!!!!!!!! They’re expensive but gorgeous none the less and you can always find a dress for any body type! Congrats! To my city hall wedding I wore a black strapless dress with a champagne bow that tied around the back. We’re also having a wedding in which my dress is ivory :) Congratulations!!

I will also be having a civil ceremony in a few weeks and have had the hardest time trying to decide what I want to wear! I originally wanted something white and very “Carrie Bradshaw-esque” but found it to be very difficult to find so I have now broadened my search to any kind of spring cocktail style dress! I am planning a larger party for family and friends in a few months so I’m going to save my white dress for then.

I think all 3 cocktail dresses are gorgeous but I think my favorite is the first one… even tho the one from Saks is a very close second! Can’t wait to see the results!

I love the white cocktail dresses! We had a civil marriage nine months ago. We had a week from when we decided to elope and leaving for Vegas and I couldn’t find anything I loved.

I ended up wearing a $9.99 sale dress from the gap that was already in my closet. I wish I had had more time, but when I think about our little ceremony, I don’t focus on the dress, just how amazing and emotional it was to say my vows to my darling man.

Enjoy this time!!

Love that first lace dress! Also, Nordstrom just put all their wedding stuff in one place plus some goodies — I blogged about the goodness! http://bit.ly/9S3Vif
