Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.

Farm Wedding v. Camp Wedding

March 9th, 2010 @ 12:11 pm by Mrs. Veggie

So, thinking about our wedding venue wish list, I began to do some intensive Googling. My keywords? “farm wedding”, “organic wedding”, “thrifty wedding”, “eco wedding”, “barn wedding”, “cheap wedding”. This was one of the first venues I stumbled upon. Organic local food? Absolutely stunning? I’m in love.

Mama Veggie: Umm… that looks kind of expensive.
Me: How expensive could it be? They’re farmers.

The answer: out of our price range, for sure. Not just minimally, but way out. Onwards. Maybe I should emphasize the “cheap” keyword. Hmm… this site looks interesting. “A Practical Wedding: Creative, Thrifty, Sane”. I like it. I especially like this one:

Mama Veggie: Ooh let’s call them right now.
Me: I’m already on the phone with them. Oh. They have a no alcohol policy. Thanks anyway, bye.

Not that we are big drinkers, but we like to have a good time. And I think Mr. Veggie might need a shot of something to get down the aisle. Onwards.

My search led me to many beautiful farms. Gorgeous farms. Stunning farms.

And that’s just three of them. I must have found dozens of gorgeous farms with gorgeous people willing to host our wedding.

But… I just kept going back to that great camp wedding. Camps have big beautiful lodges, right? Camps aren’t used much after summer, right? We might even be able to find a camp that has a farm! Let’s see what we can find.

Ooh check out this $2,000 wedding!

Or how great is this lodge?

Ugh, decisions decisions. Let’s make a list.

Farm:

  • Used to doing weddings so there’s a good chance there is better service
  • Generally no need to rent things like linens, chairs, etc.
  • More likely to have connections to local growers even if they don’t grow food themselves anymore

Camp:

  • Everyone could stay there all weekend. Fun!
  • Looks like it would be a lot cheaper
  • May be more flexible since they don’t do weddings as often

Which would you choose?

I love the idea of a camp wedding, but I am probably going to end up with a farm wedding, with camping!

I’d go with a farm myself, but I never went to a camp or anything like that so that’s probably why. Your inspiration pics are to die for!

One of the best weddings I ever attended was my cousin’s camp wedding. It was held at a summer camp in the Santa Cruz hills & the two families & lots of friends took over the camp for 3 days. There was lots of activities, bonding, swimming, tennis… lots of chances to hang out with all the kids, and instead of a rehearsal dinner there was a campfire, sing-along, s’mores, and hot cocoa (spiked with a little something extra for the adults). So much fun. So yeah, I vote camp.

Hmmm….I think I’d go with a farm. They’re both great options, though!

My vote’s for camp wedding since I love going camping and the idea of being able to do it all weekend long for a wedding is more than enticing!

I’d go with the farm b/c I like the fact that things are more taken care of for me. Camp sounds fun though! :)

I’d go with Farm since you’d have less to worry about arranging.
Also - if you do go with the camp option you may want to make sure there are plenty of bathroom/shower facilities for your guests who aren’t terribly outdoorsy and may not love the idea of getting ready without the benefit of a hot shower and electrical outlets :)

Camp! Lodging sounds like it would be superior and you’d likely be able to take advantage of flexibility since they aren’t used to doing weddings.

Ooooh, you’ve just made me feel like my regular hotel wedding’s gonna be so flippin boring! Ah no, all those pics are great. You mentioned linen etc, would you be putting too much stress on yourself if you go for Camp option? Worth making sure…
