About Mrs. Spaniel

Fixation

March 9th, 2010 @ 3:18 pm by Mrs. Spaniel

I needed a focus for all of my wedding anxiety, so I picked the DJ. I was afraid that she wouldn’t show up on the day of and I wouldn’t know until it was too late, and we’d have no music. I acknowledged that this was completely irrational, but I clung to my fear. We booked the DJ with The Pros, a big corporation that wouldn’t let us contact our DJ in advance (the one DJ who specializes in the Bhangra music we wanted at the wedding), but every contract we had said that she was “confirmed”, so I made our final payment over the weekend.

Last night, our DOC called me and told me she got a phone call from someone at The Pros, saying that our DJ is unavailable and I have to choose between one of the two remaining DJs left unbooked Los Angeles for our fast approaching wedding date—let’s call them BoyBand and PipSqueak, neither of whom have any background in Bhangra music. With our wedding day coming so soon, I don’t have time to get the music and make the playlist for them!

Why they called our DAY OF COORDINATOR (I told them to add her as a contact for the day of only, but that didn’t stop them from calling her instead of the person who just paid them, go figure), I couldn’t tell you, but since The Pros is based on the East Coast, there was no one to take my call at that hour.

On top of that, my contact there is out of the office until March 11th.

I’m actually sort of frothing at the mouth right now/in the middle of one of the worst headaches I’ve had in a long time because I’m so mad.

Did you have any last minute vendor cancellations? What did you do?

I would be PISSED. Good luck getting that sorted out! And I hope you end up with the type of music you really want.

I read about this on the boards.. so sorry Spaniel.. this is awful. We are on our third church. We found out 9 months before that we couldn’t get married at our first church (long story) which led to a frantic search for another church, then 5 months out I called them to update them on things, and basically they told me that they closed that church, and would have to move my ceremony.. mind you that no one called me.. they had closed the church months prior…

I understand your aggravation, and I’m so sorry you are going thru it. I like to think that everything happens for a reason. The church we ended up with is more beautiful than our back up church - so maybe there is a silver lining to your current “cloud”.

Sorry again!

Wow that is horrible! I can only imagine how frustrated you must be with this vendor! I would get so stressed out over something like that as well! Its still over 2 years until my wedding thus I have only booked the Church and the venue. So I have no experience in what to do once one of them cancels especially if it happens close to the wedding! I hope that it all works out for you and that you find a solution that will leave you very happy on your special day.

If you still go with the same company, you should demand a massive discount, also. I hope they give you something for letting you pay everything and then screwing up your needs.

Make someone else handle this. Give it to a parent or to Mr. S, explain how important it is, and let them scream at the vendor for you.

I can’t believe the lack of professionalism! This SUCKS but it will be okay in the end. The worst case scenario is an iPod, right? It probably won’t even come to that, but that worst-case isn’t even terrible. It’ll be ok. Just breathe :)

What does the contract say? Can they just do this switcharoo?

I can’t believe they’d do that - I’d be foaming at the mouth, too. Good luck, and I hope you find a way to work this mess out.

Wow I’m sooo sorry!!! How disappointing! Can you ask a friend or relative to get the playlist together (with minimum input from you) and give to DJ? Definitely farm this one out if you can!! Good luck!

I am so sorry - I would be FUMING! I can’t believe they would do this to you so close to your wedding day. Unbelievably unprofessional!

Ugh. The Pros are anything but pro. They are THE worst offender with the repeated voicemails and emails, and they ignore requests to unsubscribe. (I’m having an iPod wedding and believe me, if I needed to change that, calling me 3 times a week is going to cause me to hire anyone BUT you!)

They’ve got a terrible reputation here on the East Coast… I bet you could find hundreds of brides online who have had the same experience as you. Maybe some of them have had success in dealing with the same situation and could offer you some advice? I hope you can get a good resolution…good luck!

Yep our DJ backed out on us 2 weeks before our wedding. We had signed a contract with him 11 months prior too. But that didn’t stop him. What a douchebag he was. We had to use a different DJ in his company and I wasn’t happy with him. I kept trying to contact him all week long before my wedding and he never got back to us until 10pm the night before the wedding. I was so pissed. The entire rehearsal dinner I was worried that the DJ wasn’t going to show the next day. I made sure we had some music on a ipod just in case. He did show, but I wasn’t happy with him during the wedding. He kept coming up to me to ask me a million questions, the sound kept cutting in and out which would make our guests jump out of our seats, and he was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt when we specifically asked him to dress in at least some nice khakis and a dress shirt. He also took a smoke break and during that break a song that he already played an hour earlier played again. Anyways, DJs suck. But if you can just go with the flow once the wedding day arrives I’m sure you’ll be fine. And I know it’s close to your day, but I would really make up a play list of the specific songs you want.

i’m frothing at the mouth for you. that’s completely outrageous. i cannot believe they did that. get someone to call them and get your original DJ back. if that doesn’t work–money is one thing, but if you don’t want to work with them anymore, you can try to find someone on short notice. i don’t want you to be worrying about whether this company will follow through as you walk down the aisle!

That’s awful, Spaniel!! That’s just one of my worst fears! Is there any other company that might have a dj specializing in bhangra music? That DJ company should give you your money back and I would write a horrible review of them everywhere I could!

@MandyW: There are a lot of DJ companies that specialize in it, but most are in the Bay Area…we don’t have much of a South Asian population in Socal. They are also quite a bit more expensive! We expect to pay more now, but it will be hard until we get our refund.

This is awful, I’m sorry (and so mad for you). I would definitely look around and see who else you can find. Even if they don’t specialize in what you want, maybe at least they’ll be a decent DJ. I wouldn’t trust the two that the Pros have to offer (and wouldn’t want to be giving them my money anyway). Maybe post an ad on craigslist too - it can’t hurt.

My biggest fear is that our DJ doesn’t show up. There’s been one or two nightmares about it. I’m so angry for you! I hope you find something you can work with.

Ugh! I actually also have a fear that something similar is going to happen with our ceremony musicians. Still, that’s really wrong! They should have called you!!
