Mrs. Trail Mix's Picture
Mrs. Trail Mix, New York Age and Occupation: 26, PE Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, MBA Student Engagement Date: March 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: Tannery Pond at the Darrow School About Me: I'm a country girl who somehow found herself living in the Big Apple and loving every minute of it. I'm planning a rustic, country-chic wedding in my hometown in upstate New York and it's going to be a Party with a capital P. White wine, flea markets and running keep me happy and my friends, family and fiance are my world. I'm a little bit crafty, a little bit crazy but mostly just crazy in love.
About Mrs. Trail Mix

In case you’re not savvy with the online wedding lingo, OOT stands for Out Of Town (although I like to pronounce it in my head as ’ute’ because it reminds me a children’s book I used to read). OOT Bags are a lovely way to welcome your guests to your wedding when they check in at the hotel and usually contain snacks, water, directions and any other pertinent information.

I thought my idea was simple enough: Buy plain white paper bags, decorate each one with a custom stamp and add a ribbon bow to the top. Nothing too crazy, but I felt confident my limited DIY skills could handle this.

Ha. That was an incorrect assumption on my part. I could’ve just slapped a custom sticker on these babies and went on my merry way but no, I had to make things difficult for myself. The OOT bags have turned into an ongoing saga that rivals our table numbers. In short, I have spent far too much money, time and effort to produce something that only looks decent enough and that no one will notice. Excuse me while I go scream into a pillow for a minute.

Here’s the story: I ordered 100 white paper bags from Paper Mart for $31.00, along with 25 yards of yellow grosgrain ribbon for $12.00. That part I could handle. It was the ’Welcome’ stamp that through me off course.

It was partly my fault.

After contacting a few sellers on Etsy who did custom stamps and convincing one of them to lower their price (who knew custom stamps were so freakin’ expensive?!?!) I finally had a seller who could create what I wanted. However, stupid me never actually took a bag out of its package to measure it and just guessed at the size stamp I wanted. It was only after it was delivered that I realized how big a six-inch stamp was. A three-inch or four-inch would have served just as well and been significantly cheaper (the custom stamp from lovestocreatestamps on Etsy was $34.95 with shipping).

The next problem arose from trying to actually use the stamp. First off, it took me a lot of online searching to find a stamp pad that was big enough. Like, days of online searching. Those buggers are not easy to come by! I finally found one and ordered it but it turned out to be a navy blue—too dark for what I was really hoping for.

Boo—it was not the blue I’ve been using in our paper-goods palette. At first, I decided it was I was OK with using the navy ink pad, but I ended up displeased and continued my search for a stamp pad with a light blue ink.

I tried using a smaller stamp pad and dabbing it all over, but that didn’t really work either. After three different stamp pads were unsuccessful, a saleswoman at Michaels recommended the school supply online store Lakeshore Learning Materials as a possible source. Finally, success! There, I found a huge aqua ink pad for $4.95 ($10.95 including shipping).

But the problems didn’t stop there. Even with my giant, correctly-colored stamp pad, I still couldn’t get the stamp to be evenly applied to the bag. I kept having blotches like this:

See those random shapes in the curlique of the flower and the random mark on the left? They are not supposed to be there. Grrrr…

I seriously tried every technique I could think of to stamp cleanly but try as I might, it was just not possible. This is why my review of my Etsy stamp seller is not fully positive, since I don’t think the stamp was made very well, hence the random blotches when I used it. Although the seller was very accommodating when we were in the process of designing the stamp, I am not very happy with the quality and I expressed my disappointment but have yet to receive a response.

So what’s a resourceful, craft-challenged girl to use when her expensive, custom stamp isn’t working out the way she had hoped for? Wite-Out, my friends—lots and lots of Wite-Out. I went through all 97 of my stamped bags and used that trusty necessity of the office to save my image from looking like, well, crap, to be honest. It literally looked as though the wedding threw up OOT bags all over my apartment since I had to lay them all out to dry once I applied the Wite-Out.

Luckily, this story does have a happy ending and I was finally able to produce some very cute OOT bags, that I will show and give a tutorial on in my next post. The final budget came out to just under $100 to decorate the freakin’ OOT bags. Don’t even get me started on what a waste of money this project was, but once I had begun, I was in it to win it, cost be damned.

Do you have a saga about some random decor detail of your wedding? Would you have guessed that finding a stamp pad big enough for a six-inch stamp would have been incredibly difficult?

Hah! My save the dates turned out to be a very similar saga, so I completely feel your pain. But doesn’t it feel good to get that project finished, even at a price tag much higher than you originally thought?

I don’t mean to be mean, but could it be user error? Stamps usually are fine and don’t stamp where they aren’t supposed to. I noticed you are stamping where the bottom of the bag is folded up behind and is in line with where you stamped the image. Could it be the edge of the bag bottom behind the front is causing the problem? I hope that makes sense.

When you use a stamp you need a solid and completely flat surface. If you don’t have that then it could come out funny no matter the stamp.

I am not a good stamper, so I will definitely not be going this route for our OOT bags lol!

Your stamp is adorable though, I’m glad you won your battle. Good use of determination!

I feel your pain. I was 1/2 way through edging our invitation belly bands last night, and the punch broke. REALLY?!?! Gah.

Another trick is to not push the stamp down onto the stamp pad too much. If you do that then ink can gather in the negative areas you don’t want inked. I tend to turn the stamp over and use the ink pad to apply the ink to the stamp instead so I don’t have to worry about that.

@Curlysue: I seriously tried EVERYTHING. If I didn’t push the stamp onto the ink pad with some weight, it didn’t stamp dark enough or even enough. I moved the stamp higher on the bag to try to avoid the crease and it STILL did the same thing! I even tried rolling the ink on like a print but nothing worked!

Oh wow :( Okay, then yeah, stamp stunk…what a bummer. I just know new stampers have the same kind of issues. Glad they turned out in the end because that is a very cute stamp!

Ugh - it’s so annoying when a seemingly simple DIY project turns into a big ordeal! BTW you totally have me thinking “ooot” now :)

What a drama filled DIY! I’m sorry it didn’t work out as easily as planned. I was thinking of doing the same thing and now i’m questioning whether I should just scratch the idea all together and use tags instead!

Glad it worked out, gotta love white out!

i don’t think your problem was with the stamp. I had a store-bought stamp and it still made blotches, especially on the corners. I think it is just a problem of applying too much ink and not even pressure.

I’m sorry you had such a hard time. When I used to use large rubber stamps, I used a brayer to spread the ink after rolling the brayer on the little ink pad. I could keep the ink off the edges of the stamp that way.

I was in the search for a custom stamp that says “Welcome to Newport”, but couldn’t bring myself to splurge on it. I’m sorry your stamp didn’t turn out the way you wanted, but I can’t wait to see how they did turn out!

Those stamps can be tricky buggers, for sure! I’ve only used smaller sized ones, but have also had some trouble getting it to stay clean-looking. One time, I ended up having to ink the stamp and then take a Wet Wipe and clean every part around it. It was such a pain in the arse… LOL

Yikes. I’m sorry to hear about that. I have to say that they still look very pretty, so don’t fret! And you know what, I doubt guests would care if the stamping was even or uneven, they’re just gonna get at the goodies inside! :D
