About Mrs. Pencils

I’ve let you all in on how Mr. Pencils and I had planned to actually make our wedding bands ourselves. This past weekend, we did it!

It was the ultimate DIY—we spent our Saturday with an amazing Virginia jeweler, who had his own shop at his house. He showed us the ropes, but mainly made us walk the ropes ourselves! It was an intense, fun, exhilarating, awesome day, and in the end we had our wedding rings!

We were both so jazzed at the end of the day that I made Mr. Pencils proclaim his excitement to the world (and roll up his window when I was cold! Hee hee):

We began quite excited about the day:

The first step was melting the white gold and creating the block with which we would build our rings. Mr. Pencils went first:

I was pretty excited about his awesome pour:

But would I do as well?

(Not so much. His pour was better!)

The molecules in the metal were now incredibly tight, and we had to go through a process of kneeling (heating up the metal) and milling (stretching the metal) to prepare it to become two rings.

So Mr. P kneeled:

I milled:

We repeated this process until we had a very long, blackened piece of white gold:

More to come soon!

What’s your greatest DIY project? Would you consider making your own wedding rings?

We made our own rings too!

We went through a company called Wedding Ring Workshop (www.weddingringworkshop.com). They are basically just the organizing company…they find local jewelers who want to work with them, so you actually go work with the individual local jewelers.

We definitely could have gotten cheaper rings, but it was by no means outrageous. For gold or platinum the cost is based on current metal prices, but we paid $1600 for the whole experience and 2 rings about a year ago. To buy the ring that we designed my ring after would have cost $3000+…so for us it was cheaper!
