Stamps Dilemma

March 9th, 2010 @ 9:35 am by Mrs. Chick

Since we only had to snail mail a couple of save the dates (the rest of them having been sent electronically), I wasn’t too worried about which stamps to use. I ended up going with the standard wedding band stamp. Truthfully there were very few choices for wedding stamps:

(USPS)

That got me to thinking about which stamp I need to buy for our invitations and RSVP cards (albeit, we have yet to design/purchase them!). Here are a couple ideas:

I like the feathery details… they’re kind of French looking? I don’t like that it is black and white.

I like that it is gray (coordinating with our wedding colors), but the font leaves something to be desired.

I love that it has a coordinating invitation stamp! I wish it were gray.

I could go with good ole Audrey Hepburn, who is always a classic. But then the question of what stamp to use for the remainder of the postage…

Stamps Dilemma : wedding houston postage 8 8

(Champion Stamp)

My other idea is to make my own stamps with the graphics from the save the dates. I think it would be a nice thread of continuity… what do you think?

Maybe something like this?

Did you make a custom stamp for your invitations? How did you decide on which stamp you wanted to use?

I love your design! I would go with that one but then again I’m kind of a freak for personalized details :)

I couldn’t bring myself to spend the extra for zazzle stamps . . . . But I scouted around the post offices to buy Year of the Tiger stamps. Of course, the tiger is kinda hidden, but there are nice narcissus flowers on it. FI was born in the year of the tiger and I thought it was a nice connection to the “Double Happiness” that is part of the embossing seal with my parents’ address. If my invites only cost $.61 to mail, I’ll use the wedding cake. My second choice for $.44 stamps was the CELEBRATE one.

Hah. Love this post. Stamps may be what separate the women from the girls, so to speak, in terms of planning/attention to wedding detail. I really couldn’t care less about what stamps I smack on those invites.

@rplatzer:

I thought about it for about two seconds when they told me they didn’t have any pretty ones, and then went with what they had. I quickly tried to remember ever paying attention to the stamp on any letter I received.

So my invites had James Michener on them, and my RSVPs had good old American Flags :)

I rushed to get my invites out early last year because I didn’t care for the 2 wedding band stamp (I don’t like yellow gold)… so I was able to use the sage green wedding stamp from last year (that matched our colors)! I was sooo close to designing my own, but couldn’t justify the extra expense! Good luck with whichever you pick!!

Oh, I just checked out the stamps for 2010, and love the “Love: Pansies in a Basket” stamp (http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2009/pr09_118.htm#love) that will be available in April or May, and also the evergreens (for an eco/outdoor wedding) - but they don’t go on sale until October.

I like the last one best.

I went with the currently available stamps to send out the invites (they went out yesterday-yay!) I created my own postage for the rehearsal dinner invites. They are a picture from our engagement session. I loved how they turned out but it puts the price at about $1 per stamp.
The woman who did our envelopes also created a stamp for us that we could have used if we chose but like knapper I could justify that expense on a larger scale.

These are all so pretty. I like the idea of continuity with the stamps, but I didn’t want to fork up the extra moola. So forever stamps it will be for us.

I couldn’t bring myself to pay extra either. We’re biologists and know lots of biologists, so for them I bought kelp forest stamps with fish and birds (the others got wedding band stamps). There are new art stamps coming out soon. Some of the >44c stamps are really cool - national park, dolphins, bighorn sheep. Or a wedding cake for the more traditional.

ps unless you get your envelopes hand canceled no one will be able to see the stamp anyway under the big black wavy lines

Love the custom stamps but can’t bring myself to shell out for them…So we’ll probably go with the king/queen ones!

I think the last one is really cute, but really, honestly, your guests will not notice you used a Forever stamp or something else. Well, maybe for a second, but unless it’s a bride planning her current wedding it will be a detail quickly forgotten. How much will it cost to get those custom stamps compared to regular stamps? Maybe put that extra amount towards something else? Just my thoughts.

I’ve tossed around this idea, but we still can’t make up our minds yet.

Very true about guests not noticing the stamps, ladies! I guess the reccessionista bride is coming out in me! As a former archi and a current graphics obsessed person, in the past when I’ve received wedding invitations, I’ve always noticed the stamps and I remember making mental notes of “remind me NOT to use clashing stamps when I make my invitations!” But really, that is just me being my usual OCD self, and you guys are probably right, no one will really notice!
If I do use cute stamps, USPS or custom, I would have them hand canceled for sure!
So my current USPS favorites are: king/queen, monarch (62 cent, http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2009/pr09_118.htm#monarch) if I have a bigger card, or the sunday comics (http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/2009/pr09_118.htm#sunday), even though that probably wouldn’t make too much sense, but Mr. Chick and I both love the sundays!
Thanks to @knapper08: for the link!

The matching stamps look so cute! If you can afford them, go for it. Its a nice little detail. I always pay attention to what stamps I send out, I don’t like the boring “Forever” stamps.
