Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, Dallas Age and Occupation: 28, Special Projects Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity Trader Engagement Date: March 19, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Marie Gabrielle, Dallas About Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.

Stand-In Rings

March 9th, 2010 @ 6:08 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

So, Mr. Fro Yo and I do a lot of outdoor activities. Nearly every day we take our dogs for a hike, and this past weekend we also went kayaking. I love doing all of these things, but every time we go for a hike, kayaking or just out to the lake, I take off my engagement ring, and I imagine I’ll do the same once I get my wedding ring. It always makes me a little sad and I wish that I had something that I could wear on our outings that I wouldn’t worry about losing or damaging.

Then I stumbled on these:

They are absolutely perfect and could be made with any of the wood that we have all around us.

The groom made them for he and his new wife, so I figured maybe Mr. Fro Yo could do the same.

I showed them to him and suggested that he make them. Although he thought they were pretty cool, he wasn’t so sure he could make them. He said something about how it would take tools that he didn’t have. Not one to be discouraged though, I suggested that he add said necessary tools to our registry so that we could then make them after the wedding. I think all he heard was “tools” and “registry” and he happily obliged. I think he’s very excited about the tools regardless of the plans I have for them.

Do you have stand-in rings? Do they resemble your traditional rings, or are they nontraditional like the ones above?

I like the wood stand-in rings! We kind of did the same thing, when my fiance proposed he did it with two rings - my diamond engagement ring, and a simple titanium band for the exact reason you stated - we’re super outdoorsy, always hiking and kayaking etc, and I don’t want to lose/ding up my “real” ring! We found a couple who makes titanium bands on Etsy.com and ordered from them - my fiance got his actual wedding band from them as well!

Those are cute but I wonder if they are comfortable though? It looks a little thick on her hand.

Super cute! We do have stand-in rings (for international travel, etc), and they’re pretty close to our originals.

These are wonderful, I love them. I wear a tanzanite ring that my mother gave me for my birthday, years ago, in place of my e-ring when traveling internationally or doing anything like you mentioned where you really don’t want to be wearing an insanely expensive piece of jewelry on your hand. It’s small, pretty, and still looks like an e-ring to my eyes.

I got FI a hammered silver e-ring (local maker on etsy) that will be his stand-on for outdoorsy activities.

that’s really cute! there are a lot of companies out there that make wood rings, if you’re just looking for stand-ins and don’t want to make them.

That is such a cute idea!! I have a very physical demanding job so I have a stand-in ring as well. It is a simple sterling silver band that I wear while at work, and then I wear my engagement ring when I am not at work. It works very well and keeps the engagement ring safe! I am all for your wood stand-in rings!

these are really cute, but honestly i’ve seen a lot of talk about stand in rings on wedding bee and i don’t get the point of them… but a) i can still function without my ring on and b) it seems kind of ridiculous to spend a lot of money on an expensive ring if a stand in seems to look like and function the same way c) a bunch of crazy single gals probably won’t try to jump your husband’s bones when he’s running a race, climbing a mountain, chopping down trees and what not.

@evahesse: It’s not about other people “jumping his bones” it’s about wanting to wear something that signifies our marriage and bond. I don’t want him to wear his regular wedding ring so that people won’t hit on him, I want him to wear it for the same reasons he would wear a stand in. It’s not necessary, but it’s a nice to have for us and it’s something we want, but to each their own.

I think the sentiment of having rings that he made for you both is really sweet :)
We won’t have stand in rings per se, but the FI proposed with a “stand in” ring for me to wear until we could have our real ones made. It’s more simple, lies flat on my hand, and only has tiny diamond chips. We didn’t need something sturdy like you’re talking about, but we do a lot of international travel, and figured it’d be best to have one that wasn’t as attention grabbing as a solitaire.
