Bridesmaid Shoes: The Hunt

March 10th, 2010 @ 2:03 pm by Mrs. Buttons

It is official: I get hung up over the most ridiculous things when it comes to wedding planning.

I think it is perfectly understandable when a bride-to-be frets over the bridesmaid dress selection process. There are so many options, so many colors, so many styles… it can be a daunting task! Well, if you recall, I made that particular decision rather quickly. Remember these?

It was easy peasy to select these dresses… and I quickly moved on to planning other aspects of the day. I wasn’t concerned with jewelry, as I tend to like subdued things (aka I’ll probably just have them all wear pearls in whatever way, shape, and form that they want).

Oh but wait… what about their feet?

SCREEEEEEEEECH . The bridesmaid attire train (which had previously been speeding down the tracks) halted to an abrupt stop.

Initial impressions from some people: “have them wear gold or silver shoes.”

That would be the easy and simple route, wouldn’t it? I will admit, I pondered this for a short time, but to be really 100% honest, I was not feeling it. I don’t even own a pair of gold shoes (or silver) myself… I guess they really aren’t my thing?

I emailed the Button Bridesmaids and asked them to send me photos of any and all shoes that they owned that would match the dress. My thoughts were as follows: if everyone has something that will work, and they will somewhat coordinate, then that would be awesome!

Well, that was wishful thinking on my part, because it didn’t work. Only 2 of the 4 actually owned shoes that would look appropriate with the dress. Darn it! Well, at least I tried, right?

Resigned, I started to hunt more vigorously online and in stores for something that made my heart skip a beat. The first question I tackled: what color shoes do I want? Originally, I was set on green… but upon further inspection, I realized that locating the appropriate color of green shoes in stores was almost asking the impossible. Oh, I could find some amazing green shoes… don’t get me wrong… but they usually carried a price tag of over $100, or were so hard to track down that I wasn’t sure if we would be able to find a pair for each of the bridesmaids!

Sigh…I wish…

My next venture was to investigate dyeable shoes. I visited both Payless and David’s Bridal to test out a few pairs and view their color selections. I was happy to find that both stores carried a beautiful grassy green hue. BUT, when I tried on the different styles, I was underwhelmed by the cuteness factor, and was actually a little bit in pain.

There were a few shoes that I thought had promise, but when I walked around in a few of them, my typically tough feet were feeling a bit sore… darn it all! As much as I was hoping that they would work, the dyeable shoes were nixed.

OK, so what in the world was I going to do?!?! As the days whizzed by, I was really unsure if I would ever find the perfect shoe(s) for my bridesmaids…

Did you select shoes for your bridesmaids, or did they go on a hunt themselves?

I’m just dealing with this too! Dang Turquoise dresses. I told people I just wanted black shoes and everyone resisted. So odd. Can’t wait to figure out what you chose because I’m pretty clueless right now.

How about a nude shoe?

I’m in love with your bridesmaid dresses, just so you know!!! Shoes are hard, though. I like the suggestion of a nude shoe, or you could even go with black (I know - no fun, haha). Green would look great, but green shoes are so hard to find!!

My girls’ dresses are green and they are each picking out their own silver shoes. Safe, but also easy! My MOH loves fashion so I thought that would still give her plenty of room to play, and for another one of my BMs, who never wears heels, cheap silver heels should be easy to find.

Side note: My FH and I moved last summer from Blacksburg to Clearwater (ok, Tarpon Springs, but close enough) - how funny!

If you don’t mind, what about asking them to wear white shoes? There are an awful lot of affordable white sandals/pumps/heels that start to appear for spring.

I love the second dyeable pair. Maybe you could give them foot petals as one of their BM gifts? =)

I just told my girls they could wear whatever shoes they wanted as long as they were formal/dressy and black. I know black is a little blah and boring, but most of them will already own a nice pair of black dress shoes, they’re easy to find, and they can definitely wear them again! We did this for another wedding I was in and it worked out really well because some girls like flats, some like heels, some like peep toe pumps! Everyone was happy and it still looked nice :)

I scrolled back to your post that had your BM Inspiration Board and looked at your colors…I then put the board next to the dresses & shoes above…What do you think about a vintage blue satin peep toe? Not baby blue or navy but a really cool vintage blue…..Below is a link of the color I’m trying to explain, I hope it helps =)

I thing silver would look great! Like a dark pewter maybe?

I have a similar problem, trying to find shoes for myself that have a low enough heel so that I don’t tower over my fiance.

First off, I am in love with your bridesmaid dresses! Too bad they don’t have it in my wedding color (sage/clover green)!! I’m in search of BM dresses and thought you had eased my mind! Secondly, I was thinking silver shoes as well, but hopefully something will capture your heart soon!

I’m letting then pick anything in any color - just NOT silver lol (it would clash with the jewelry I bought them). And they are wearing navy.

I wanted a similar green shoe for my own self at the wedding, and it was tough! In fact I ended up giving up without finding the perfect shoe for the perfect price, so I feel your pain!

I think gold or silver would be your best bet as far as re-wearing goes, if you can’t swing green….Mine are wearing gold shoes, as am I!

OMG, I spent 10 months trying to track down those stupid Nine West apple green shoes you posted!
I think they are in about 50 green inspiration boards I looked at, I LOVED them, and I obsessed about them forever! I finally had to give up :(

@Miss Hot Wings: You could always do nude colored shoes. That’s why I’m doing.

I had my girls in matching DB shoes, and if I had it all to do over again, I fo’ sho’ would have let them pick their own. For gosh sakes, we got married in a backyard. With grass. Covering everyone’s shoes.

I think that pewter/ dark grey or even a light grey is a way to get around the “silver” shoe and still be left with something that looks great and is totally re-wearable!

I wanted my shoes to match the color of my bridesmaids’s dresses… so I bought heels that I could dye. Zappos.com had the best selection! I still wear my shoes! They’re a fabulous shade of berry! :)
