Back in December, I knew I wanted to get Mr. Nachos a wedding present. I know a lot of couples write each other sweet love letters to read on the wedding day, but what I had in store was so much bigger if I could actually pull it off. I knew it was a long shot, but I wanted to give the ultimate Cubs fan the ultimate present – the chance to throw out a first pitch at a Cubs game.

One of the gazillion pics I have of us at Cubs’ games
I Googled, I researched, I tried to find the best possible route to take to make this magic happen. Then I realized I have resources right in front of me!
Mr. Nachos is a producer at a radio station. Their morning show guy, Drex, threw out a first pitch last summer. Hmmmm. I sent a text to my friend, Mel T., who also does the morning show to see what she thought, plus I knew she wouldn’t tell Mr. Nachos. She told me that this is why she loves me and that I should talk to our other friend Paulie at the station. So, I then sent him a text and crossed my fingers.
He loved the idea and told me he would contact the station’s Cubs contact that set up last year’s pitch. Woohoo! I was on the right track. Everyone that knows Mr. Nachos knew how perfect a present this could be for him.
I waited a few months. My friends and I talked about how great it would be if it happened. How Mr. Nachos would figure out exactly which jersey to wear based on who they were playing and what the team would be wearing. How he would be nervous and excited but still manage to throw a perfect pitch. I was patient. Things like this could take time. But last month I hadn’t heard anything, so I reached out to Paulie again. He told me he talked to them a while back and would follow-up for me. And the next day, I got the news.
The radio spots that the Cubs’ contact at the station has are for sponsors only. They can’t even be bought.
Poops. I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed because it would have been the ULTIMATE wedding gift for the biggest Cubs fanatic I know and love. So I did the next best thing - I talked to his friend that he gets his season tickets from, and paid for his portion. Yeah, not nearly as exciting. Pretty anti-climactic, really, after I built up the vision in my head of Mr. Nachos on the pitcher’s mound. And although he was thrilled to pieces, I kinda don’t like the fact that I’ve already given him his gift with the wedding still 6 weeks away, so he’ll be getting a love letter on our wedding day as well. I ended up telling him about my original plan and I told him that at some point in his lifetime, I WILL make it happen. I don’t know how. I don’t know when. But. it. will. happen.
