First Pitch Fail

March 10th, 2010 @ 8:34 am by Mrs. Nachos

Back in December, I knew I wanted to get Mr. Nachos a wedding present. I know a lot of couples write each other sweet love letters to read on the wedding day, but what I had in store was so much bigger if I could actually pull it off. I knew it was a long shot, but I wanted to give the ultimate Cubs fan the ultimate present – the chance to throw out a first pitch at a Cubs game.

First Pitch Fail : wedding gift ideas st thomas Untitled491 untitled491

One of the gazillion pics I have of us at Cubs’ games

I Googled, I researched, I tried to find the best possible route to take to make this magic happen. Then I realized I have resources right in front of me!

Mr. Nachos is a producer at a radio station. Their morning show guy, Drex, threw out a first pitch last summer. Hmmmm. I sent a text to my friend, Mel T., who also does the morning show to see what she thought, plus I knew she wouldn’t tell Mr. Nachos. She told me that this is why she loves me and that I should talk to our other friend Paulie at the station. So, I then sent him a text and crossed my fingers.

He loved the idea and told me he would contact the station’s Cubs contact that set up last year’s pitch. Woohoo! I was on the right track. Everyone that knows Mr. Nachos knew how perfect a present this could be for him.

I waited a few months. My friends and I talked about how great it would be if it happened. How Mr. Nachos would figure out exactly which jersey to wear based on who they were playing and what the team would be wearing. How he would be nervous and excited but still manage to throw a perfect pitch. I was patient. Things like this could take time. But last month I hadn’t heard anything, so I reached out to Paulie again. He told me he talked to them a while back and would follow-up for me. And the next day, I got the news.

The radio spots that the Cubs’ contact at the station has are for sponsors only. They can’t even be bought.

Poops. I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed because it would have been the ULTIMATE wedding gift for the biggest Cubs fanatic I know and love. So I did the next best thing - I talked to his friend that he gets his season tickets from, and paid for his portion. Yeah, not nearly as exciting. Pretty anti-climactic, really, after I built up the vision in my head of Mr. Nachos on the pitcher’s mound. And although he was thrilled to pieces, I kinda don’t like the fact that I’ve already given him his gift with the wedding still 6 weeks away, so he’ll be getting a love letter on our wedding day as well. I ended up telling him about my original plan and I told him that at some point in his lifetime, I WILL make it happen. I don’t know how. I don’t know when. But. it. will. happen.

AW. I’m so sorry! Have you tried contacting media relations? The ticket agent of the season tickets?
I wanted to get FI a tour of our NFL stadium for his 30th birthday. And that was THE hardest task EVER. We were season ticket holders ourselves so you would think it would be easier! But it took MONTHS of emailing and phone calls to finally get it to happen. Don’t lose hope!!!

That is a great idea! I’m sure you will make it happen at some point!! I understand how disappointed you are though, I would be too. But it is really okay. In the meantime, he can still enjoy his Cubs!

One time I got my fiance tickets to a Patriots game (his team) for his birthday. I got the tickets months in advance, but the game was three or four days after his birthday and I was so excited to surprise him then! But 1-2 months before the game, his brother asked him to go to a concert on the day of the game, so I had to tell him I had bought the tickets. We went to the game - so our plans did not fall through, but I was disappointed that my surprise was ruined!!

Aw, I love this idea!! It’s much bigger and better than the watch I was thinking of buying my fiance four our wedding day gift exchange. I’m so sorry it didn’t work out! I’m disappointed for you! I know it’s not going to suffice, but at least he knows you tried to do something amazing/out of the park for him, and it’s the thought that counts anyway, right? Well, you’ve got me rethinking my entire strategy now! I want to do something bigger and better than I planned… like dinner with his favorite television star or something! Thanks for the jolt in a new, bigger direction!

I know that’s such a bummer but it’s the thought that counts and I still think he got a great gift and he’s happy to know that he has something like you as his soon-to-be wife. :)

I myself am a huge baseball fan so I feel it’s my duty to pass on something I think is pretty cool, albeit not as cool as throwing out the first pitch. Cufflinks from Wrigley Field! This way he could have them for the wedding and as a cool keepsake.

What an awesome idea! Totally bummer it didn’t work out, but I’m sure he got WAY closer than most people :)
My goal was to write down 365 things I loved about Mr Frenchie, put them in a box or something and give them to him on our wedding day…. I only had a week between finals and our wedding aaannndd it didn’t happen, but I still write down 5 things I love about Mr Frenchie every Friday :)

I tried to get my fiance’s favorite band to play our reception and that didn’t work out either. Disappointment. Also, as a Twins fan, I am relieved to see that you aren’t White Sox fans! Lol!

Awww I’m so sorry it didn’t work out. Don’t you just love ideas like that that you know would be ultimately perfect gift for your SO?

I definitley had an experience like this. My FIs all-time favorite band is Dashboard Confessional. I have been saving my tooshie off even before we were engaged and managed to save $5k (you can’t imagine how hard this was to do without him noticing since we share a bank acct). Now I know to a professional musician that’s not alot, but I was going to try to just get Chris Carrabba (solo/acoustic) so I thought maaaybe it would work. How perfect would it be for us to hit the floor for our first dance, and onto the stage walks Chris Carrabba playing our song (”I Do”)?
Needless to say, it’s not panning out. Boo =(
