Mismatched-Casual-Anthro-ish?

March 10th, 2010 @ 8:06 am by Mrs. Veggie

Part of the effort to minimize the ecological impact of our wedding is minimizing the purchases we make and that others make on our behalf. With that in mind, I knew early on that I wanted my bridesmaids to wear dresses that they would definitely wear again, and if possible, something from their own closet. If the shopping urge overwhelmed them, I would love it if they all bought from second-hand shops or showed up in eco-fabrics, but I have enough to worry about with my own dress.

Since my 4 sisters are my bridesmaids it should be easy enough for them to coordinate. I told them our colors: saffron, brown, and grey, and gave them these instructions:

“Mismatched-casual-Anthro(pologie)-ish.”

I guess that wasn’t enough direction.

With prompting from my Mama Veggie, who apparently was at the receiving end of some panicked phone calls, I thought I could offer them more guidance with… an inspiration board!

So, ladies, here you go. Make me proud.

Did you give your BMs rough guidelines for their wedding day garb? How did you communicate your vision to them?

Veggie, this is adorable, and I think with the outdoor setting, it will be perfect. I really can’t wait to see everything from your wedding - it will be so pretty and so unique!

For us, I only have 3 bridesmaids, so I thought that mismatched wouldn’t seem right - like maybe I needed more girls to pull that off. So the dresses are the same - but they have freedom with the shoes and their hair.

I have been trying to place why I think I know you, and I think I finally figured it out! Did you work at Big Boulder for a winter?

Your inspiration board is perfect. It definitely gives me a sense of what you want. I think it will look great! I hope your sisters have some luck - I know that can be stressful. :)

I bet your board will be really helpful. I tried giving general guidelines, but with 6 bridesmaids in every corner of the country, it turned into a nightmare (and ultimately just stressed them out!) I ended up choosing three dresses, and after getting their approval on them, just asking them to pick one. I actually think they really appreciated being given direction.

that’s a great inspiration board–enough guidance to give them the feel for the wedding but still plenty of freedom to choose what they want!

i had my girls get the anthro black dress with flowers on the bottom and each would wear a different color sash…when the dresses came they were sooooo short, my girls don’t have long legs either. so it was back to the drawing board….looks like you have many to choose from :)

Veggie, I love your inspiration board! What a great way to give your girls guidance while letting them have the freedom to choose for themselves. Can’t wait to see what your sisters pick! :o)

Veg, love the inspiration board. I did the same thing for mine, since we’re doing non-matching dresses. I’m looking forward to seeing what they ended up buying.

So lovely. The peach/pinky/gold board you have on the right (tiny) was huge inspiration for my own mix-and-match dress brigade.

I love your ideas. I did mismatched bridesmaids as well and I found that a couple of my ladies were panic-stricken because of the lack of bossy direction I had given them. We ironed out the kinks after I mailed a little “help shopping” letter, paint swatches and inspiration board, and I think everyone is pleased with their dresses and will wear them again in the future.
We are also doing the vests for the guys!
Clearly, I think you have amazing taste :-)
