Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!
About Mrs. Jellyfish

Out-of-Town bags are a relatively new phenomenon in weddings, but I think they’re a great one. They are basically bags or baskets filled with treats/snacks for guests coming in from out of town to make them feel welcome. Usually the bride and groom leaves one at the hotel room of each guest.

I knew I wanted to make out-of-town bags (or “OOT bags”) from the beginning of my wedding planning. I think they’re such a nice gesture for those traveling far to be there for the wedding. The question was, what kind of bags would I use? Originally I thought I’d want to use cardboard gable boxes and decorate them to match our theme. Then I started thinking that I’d rather do something more eco-friendly and reusable. I saw cute plain canvas totes online for as cheap as 99 cents, but that still seemed expensive considering we will have 50+ out of town guests!

Well, one day I was shopping at my favorite store in the world (Target) when I saw these bags in their Dollar Section:

Out-of-Town Bags: Our Biggest Bargain to Date! : wedding favors pleasanton Dscn0835 dscn0835

Intrigued, I looked closer.

They were 75% off… which means they were 25 CENTS EACH! That’s by far the cheapest price I have ever seen for reusable bags. I’ll be the first to admit they aren’t the prettiest bags ever, nor do they match our theme (remind me what that is again?) but they are 1) eco-friendly and have a good message, and 2) dirt cheap. So I bought 60 of them for a mere $15 + tax, and now I’m all set on the bag part of our OOT bags! My next challenge will be deciding what to fill them with. More on that later!

If you were to have a winery wedding, what kinds of things would you fill your OOT bags with?

Awesome deal! I would definitely include bottled water and pain meds for a winery wedding. What about some local yummies?
My OOT bags will have Zapp’s potato chips, pralines, Abita beer, local bottled water, etc. I like to support our local peeps (New Orleans).

I agree, water & hangover meds would help.. you could also go with dark chocolate and cheese, but those are pricey.. maybe a trail mix, or a bag of dried fruit mix… a guide for other local wineries they may want to check out on their trip, and maybe cool coasters made of wine corks??? I’ll try to come up with something better! HEhe

Daang! That is a great deal! I really need to go to Tar-jet more often!
I would fill it with a map of the wine trial. Maybe vouchers for a free wine tasting at some of your favorite wineries? Crackers because it goes great with wine. And def water so you don’t get a wine headache!

What a SCORE! I was thrilled when I got beach bags from a similar material for $1! I bought 48 of them but will have a bunch leftover I predict.
I’m filling mine with water bottles, pain meds, brochures/maps from the area and snacks - candy, granola bars, crackers, peanuts, etc.

What a steal! Is the other side plain? If so, you could decorate that side with some fabric paint or gocco. If not, hang a tag on it that shows off your theme and personalizes it!

Personalized coasters would be cute!

Maybe you can find cheap (in price, not quality) wine bottle stoppers, or something like that? I also agree with the water and aspirin. =)

Ooo! Maybe you can DIY some little wine glass tag things? Some wire and a little charm or a few beads?

Winery-related suggestions: Bottle of wine (may be kinda pricey huh), corkscrew, guides to wines / wine trivia, wine stoppers, wine charms?
