Stop Following Me Around

March 10th, 2010 @ 4:38 pm by Mrs. Pug

What, you didn’t think there would be only one post from me about trains, did you?

At one point or another, most brides have to decide what to do with the train/bustle of their dress. Especially if you’re making your own, like Miss Sewing (jeesh, showoff).

I hadn’t thought much about the train when purchasing my dress, but like most wedding gowns, it came with one:

So, was I ready to ham it up with my train for the camera like these brides?

Well, no, I wasn’t ready. Not because my train isn’t lovely, but because… I’m lazy. These pics are pretty, right? Totally! But I don’t want to carry my train around. Not gonna do it. My arms get tired just looking at these pictures.

I considered lopping the whole train off, but: (1) the alterations seamstress looked at me like I was nuts; and (2) I plan on selling my dress afterwards and thought that potential buyers may want a train.

That train is going to be bustled up from the get-go. I want it bustled for the pre-ceremony portraits and the ceremony. I know, I know–I may lose some drama walking down the aisle without a train, but I’m serious–I don’t want to drag that thing down the aisle. I have enough problems walking as it is, and most likely Mr. Pug would find some way to set the train on fire as we walk down the aisle. No joke.

How do you feel about your train? I want to hear love stories, so-so stories, and hate-my-train stories. Did you consider a permanent bustle?

I didn’t realize my dress had a train until I went to the seamstress… I guess I’m a little dense.
It’s going to get bustled for the reception, but I definitely want my monster dress on fully display at the ceremony!

I wanted to chop mine off too, but the seamstress looked at me like I was nutso! So she showed me a french bustle and it was super pretty, so I’ll go with that. Every time I tried on a dress with a train, I just couldn’t stand it!! It startled me that it had to drag the ground when I walked!

Wearing my dress was like carrying an extra 50% of my weight around, or carrying/dragging a small child around. It was heavy and tiring. But I do not regret my wedding pictures and my photographer just couldn’t stop talking about how great it was to photograph a bride with a big skirt…. I changed into a short dress for the reception otherwise I wouldn’t have chosen a dress w/ a train. Oh well, depends on what you value more.

One of the things I love most about my dress is the train. I’m one of those people that likes a bit of resistance, so to me it feels physically good to have the bit of drag.
Weird, I know.
But it’s not so big that it feels like I’m not getting anywhere (and I KNOW I’m not the only one that’s had THAT nightmare!).
I’m looking forward to it!
Love your dress, by the way. LOVE it!

Pug, you are so funny. Your posts always make me laugh. I like that you’re going to keep the dress bustled - very practical and still very pretty. I didn’t realize my dress had a train until I looked at photos of me in it when I got home.

I don’t have a train (even though I tried on a with-train version and kinda liked it…) b/c a train almost doubled the cost of my dress… Also, I didn’t want to have bustle in-service before the wedding (and possibly face the “We can’t figure out this complicated sets of buttons and ties” drag-the-train-all-night scenario.)

I think the permanent bustle is a perfect idea!

I really wanted a small train, but that didn’t happen. I really like it because it’s pretty with all this beading and all, but what a pain. How am I to jump with this big thing weighing me down? How will I flutter about and twirl for goodness sakes? But… I will do it b/c my train is pretty glorious. It wins. btw puggy.. You’re freaking gorgeous! That dress is slamming on you.

but if it really has a mind of it’s own it might come undone just to spite you! - so make sure they tack it up tight! hehe. I’m sure it’ll look great bustled up, definitely makes it easier for walking! :D

I chopped mine off! The seamstress did think I’m crazy, and I’m still going to sell it but.. way too much work and hassle for that thing!

I LOVE trains, but you’re right, they are a bit unpractical. I would imagine that mine is going to get pretty annoying after the first polka. Still, I plan on hamming it up as much as possible :P

I never thought I’d be a train kind of girl until I bought my dress–she has a lovely chapel length train. I’m going to bustle it for the reception, but I can’t think of another occasion where I’m going to get to wear something so elaborate…so I want that train following me down the aisle!

i bustled my dress pre-ceremony for pics, let it out for my church ceremony, and immediately bustled it up again!

I picked a dress with a little tiny train because I didn’t want to end up with a 80 pound bustle. My number one rule when I was trying on dresses was that I had to be able to go the the bathroom unassited while wearing it! I’m doing a super long veil for the ceremony, so I still get the train drama, but then taking it off right away so I don’t have to fight with it for the rest of the night.

Our ceremony location actually stipulates no train (and no veil and no bridal party!), so I’m having my dress made without the train. I’m totally behind this! I wasn’t looking forward to dragging one around all day, and I feel so light and free in my dress.

I had mine chopped off. Who cares what the seamstress thinks! It was a short train anyway. I actually got it cut off right from the manufacturer (it has a custom hem), but my sales person said that some brands are more flexible than others.

I did ask about having the train cut off another dress I was considering and they told me they couldn’t.

My wedding is outdoors and all I could imagine was walking down the aisle and ending up dragging a pile of sticks and grass under my train!

Your train is so pretty! But I understand wanting to chop it off. I felt like I was going to trip over mine in the store, and I was standing still.

I do not have a train… Partially as I have a tea-length dress! But, a part of why I went that route (other than just plain liking the dress more!) is because every long dress I saw had a train… and I, personally, can’t stand them- particularly for our casual wedding :)

I constantly debate chopping mine off. Don’t know if I am quite brave enough to though…

I had a short train and hubs still found a way to step on it and almost pull my dress off mid-ceremony! I’m with you on no train or bustled the whole time!
