The Save the Date Saga

March 10th, 2010 @ 5:46 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

Minted.com makes these adorable Yearline Save the Date cards. They look like a postcard but open up to reveal a timeline inside. You can personalize it to tell your couple story, to outline the events of the wedding weekend, etc. We’ve known each other since 2002 so I think it would be fun to include our story on our STDs.

I loved this design (“float + celebrate”):

The Save the Date Saga : wedding pleasanton save the dates 14 1

The Save the Date Saga : wedding pleasanton save the dates 24 2

and this design (“Italian sunset”):

The Save the Date Saga : wedding pleasanton save the dates 32 3

The Save the Date Saga : wedding pleasanton save the dates 444 444

If money was no object, we would have purchased these Save the Dates in a heartbeat. But at around $2.50 a piece, not including postage, they were pretty expensive. If we sent out just 100 of them, it would’ve cost $300 (that includes postage). I didn’t know if I could justify that cost when other options were so much cheaper (e.g. postcards).

So, I thought of either 1) trying to DIY these, or 2) dropping the idea and just doing postcards. My lovely bridesmaid Amy volunteered to help me come up with a DIY version inspired by the Yearline cards. Here is what she came up with:

The Save the Date Saga : wedding pleasanton save the dates 42 4

I think she did a great job! We went through a few iterations and she created a few designs for a postcard that features the timeline idea. We narrowed it down to two designs:

Design 1:

The Save the Date Saga : wedding pleasanton save the dates 51 5

Design 2:

The Save the Date Saga : wedding pleasanton save the dates 61 6

The back of the postcards would also say Save the Date and would include more details as well as our wedding website.

We ended up going with design #1, and a couple days ago, I received this lovely box in the mail…

The Save the Date Saga : wedding pleasanton save the dates 71 7

They turned out beautifully. Overnightprints.com was a dream to work with and I would recommend them to anyone! Here are a few tips for brides wanting to do postcard save-the-dates (or any kind of postcards):

  • Make sure you upload the proper file size. They require a specific size file and you can even call their customer service line and they will check that everything looks clear for the printer!
  • Get a glossy front, matte back card. If you do both sides glossy, the back will smudge when the post office cancels the postcard.
  • Try printing out a sample on your home computer – I didn’t do this and the writing came out smaller than I had intended – oops! But we did have a lot of info on our cards so it kind of had to be small to fit. I’m happy with it, but it’s always a good idea to try printing it first!

I’m glad we decided to go the postcard route. While magnets would have been nice, postcards only cost .58 each (.30 for the postcard, .28 for postage). Magnets would have been at least three times that much. It also feels nice to have had a hand in designing them – I’m so proud of them! Of course I owe all credit to my bridesmaid Amy, who created numerous drafts of the postcard in Adobe Illustrator until we had the perfect postcard. She was able to incorporate all my ideas (vineyard theme, timeline, engagement pics) into one card! Thank you! Now we just have to address these babies and send them off!

When do you think is the best time to send Save the Dates?

Love it - such an awesome idea! I would probably send them out 3-4 months out so OOT have time to clear calendars, request time off, etc.

Those are so cute. I love the story line! We ordered our post card save-the-dates from overnightprints, too. I have to recommend not getting the front matte, like we did. It ended up scratching when it went through the printer, so you can see a few mistakes. We are actually getting married the same day as you, and just finished send ours out since it’s a holiday weekend. (I say finished, but I’m still getting address from my FI. It’s like pulling teeth!) We just didn’t want anyone to book anything and miss out if we could help it, and people plan early these days.

these are lovely… i really like the idea! And they turned out great. I sent ours out 1 year in advance, but that’s only because we have tons of OOT guests and it’s a busy summer time wedding. I think 6-8 months out is good.

Aww, I really love those - you did a great job! We sent our save the dates about 9 monhs in advance of our wedding because it is on Labor Day weekend and we wanted to make sure everyone knew about it in time.

These are awesome, and I love all the Minted designs. I wish we could send out like five different STDs to use all of these. The timeline of your relationship idea is so sweet.

Just one tip for anyone who wants to do a magnet but is reconsidering because of cost; we did a paper STD and stuck a little bit of magnetic adhesive strip to the back so that it stays on the fridge. I actually like the look a lot better than STDs that are printed directly onto magnet material, and you can get the strip stuff crazy cheap in a big roll.

Great tips!

One more - For anyone else doing postcard save-the-dates, don’t make the same mistake I did. I followed all the instructions about sizing of postcards from the USPS and Vistaprint, and left plenty of space at the bottom of the card on the side with the address for the post office to add their bar code/strip. Well… they put all the bar code sticker things on the *front* side of the postcard, right where I had out date listed. I asked the post office for the second batch I sent if they could put it on the back side, and they said the machine does it, and they can’t control which side it’ll be on. sigh.

Don’t put anything important at the bottom of your postcard.

we used minted.com for our save-the-dates too, but opted to go with a flat card because of the price of the yearlines. your version turned out so well! I love it!

As someone who doesn’t use magnets on their fridge, I love the idea of a completely personalized postcard. Yours turned out beautifully! And I second Over Night Prints. I’ve gotten postcards printed from them too, and they turn out just lovely.
