Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.
About Mrs. Veggie

Wild Wild Vest

March 10th, 2010 @ 5:00 pm by Mrs. Veggie

I have to approach wedding topics gingerly with Mr. Veggie, lest I be greeted with a roll of the eyes or a throwing up of the hands. (Has Mr. Veggie turned into a teenage girl?)

Attempt #1 (while walking to the beach for a surf)-
Me: So, have you thought about what you might want to wear to the wedding yet?
Mr. Veggie: I thought I might just wear this. (”This” meaning a pair of bright green board shorts with hot pink stars on them that he got for free at the dump.)

Maybe that wasn’t the right moment.

Attempt #2 (early one morning)-
Me: Have you thought about what the groomsmen might wear?
Mr. Veggie: Maybe they could all wear sarongs that match this one.

Did I mention that said sarong is so dearly loved and thin that it is see-through in some conspicuous places?

Attempt #3 (while working in the garden)-
Mr. Veggie: You know, I’ve been thinking about what I want to wear to the wedding.
Me: [feigning disinterest but internally giddy with delight] Oh, yeah?
Mr. Veggie: I really like vests. I think I’d like to wear one. A jacket will be too hot in August.

A vest? Mr. Veggie doesn’t offer ideas about the wedding too often, and I want to encourage these rare events as much as possible. But, a vest? For some reason this is the image I have in my mind:

Mr. Veggie: I think I like a dark vest with light colored pants.

Whoa. Who is this man? What has he done with my fashion-allergic fiance? A dark vest with light pants. Let me do some research.

Did your FI have any input on what he wanted to wear for the wedding? Did any of his requests surprise you?

My fiance did the same thing - for him, though, it wasn’t vests….it was suspenders! He was really adamant about wanting to have his groomsmen wear suspenders, which I thought was strange given I’ve never seen him wear them himself. But hey - if it makes him interested in the wedding, we can’t complain!

funny, my FI wants to do vests too. He thinks it will add to our “west” theme. Can’t wait to see what your FI decides to wear!

I’m pro-man-in-vest! Check out jcrew.com for some studly vests.

I let FI pick all of the mens’ outfits entirely. Jackets, pants, vests, ties, suspenders, shoes, cufflinks… he did it all, and he did great. And he spends most days after work in shorts and t-shirts that he’s had for longer than I’ve known him (10 years!).

I told my FI up front that he could wear whatever he wanted to our wedding…and then held my breath hoping this wouldn’t come back to bite me in the butt. He decided on a lovely dark grey suit. Phew :)

Hehe, cute convos! A vest isn’t so bad, he could have said much crazier things!

that’s so cute! Mr. HW was adament that we buy suits instead of renting. Then he wanted gray and not black because everyone already owned a black suit. So practical that Mr. HW. Always something new.

FI wants tuxes. That’s too fancy for me but I can’t talk him out of it. I would have had suits or just vests. I don’t like the just-shirt look, but shirt+vest is good, and Mr Veg is right that August is hot - I’ve lived in PA. Also, it’s Colorado and we’re all biologists so I’m rooting for Chacos.

FI and I were both very much open to possibilities when we went to the tux shop, though we knew we wanted a fairly traditional tux so that made things easier. Our rapidly evolving visions ended up matching pretty much perfectly, with the one exception that he wanted a shinier more textured tie than I thought was appropriate for our winery venue. He relented when I pointed out how the tie I liked matched the bridesmaids’ dresses much more closely.

My guy just decided on vests for the groomsmen too! Express and J.Crew have some good options.

I am letting FI pick out what the guys are wearing since I have to worry about everyone else. HOWEVER, he wants to wear a Kilt, I really I ordinarily would not have a problem with that EXCEPT my FI is ITALIAN. LOL he was joking…. At least I hope so.

I actually think a vest is a pretty rockin’ idea! I’m thinking more hipster-esque, with maybe a dark brown vest and khaki pants? Go Mr Veggie!

haha, i love it! i totally want to see matching sarongs. in any case, i do think that a dark vest with light pants would look very dapper, in a breezy, comfortable sort of way.

He wanted a tux and it was non-negotiable. I would have been happy with navy blazers and tan pants but he got his tux.

So cute.. this gives you TONS of room to work with! My FI picked out his tux.. he wanted him and the boys to wear pinstripe tuxes. I’m okay with it.. I want him to feel sexy that day too!
