I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Beer On the Brain: The Recipe

March 11th, 2010 @ 5:34 pm by Mrs. Pretzel

The hive seemed to have a lot of interest in the recipe that we used for our favor prototype. I must be honest—it is a great recipe. The only reason that we aren’t 100% decided to use this one is because Mr Pretzel is still trying to track down a family beer bread recipe–which we think would be more sentimental.

Without a recipe of my own I turned to Google.

“Beer Bread Jar Recipe” yielded a couple contenders. Published on cookingcache.com this recipe seemed the most interesting with corn meal, pepper flakes and onion flakes. Enjoy!
Beer Bread Mix

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose unbleached flour
  • 2/3 cup yellow corn meal
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 4 teaspoon dried minced onion
  • (approximately 3 cups for a 32 ounce container)

Layers:

  • brown sugar
  • corn meal
  • Parmesan, red pepper, onion – combined
  • flour combined with baking powder, baking soda, salt

Cooking Instructions

Place contents of jar in a medium mixing bowl. Stir in 12 ounces of beer, just until combined. Pour into a greased 8 x 4 x 2″ loaf pan and bake at 375°F for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cover with foil during last 10 minutes to prevent over browning. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Cool completely or serve warm.

@bohemianbailie: you can use any beer you like. The flavor of the beer will flavor the bread so it will be a little different every time.

Beer bread never tried it or hear of it, but I know of a few people that would love the idea.
