About Mrs. Beagle

Favor Food

March 11th, 2010 @ 4:48 pm by Mrs. Beagle

For our wedding, it was super easy to decide on what we wanted to give away as favors. I, for one, am a huge fan of all things sweet and knew it would be the perfect food item to send home with our guests. (And you can read more about our choice here.)

So when I came across this site today, via this blog, I knew I had to share it with y’all because I think it would make the perfect addition to any wedding (or shower, or party, or really any occasion at my house). The idea? Individual pies in canning jars! I love, love, love this idea and if I wasn’t already married, I might throw my original idea out the window, just so I could incorporate these instead!!!

They are completely customizable with flavors, so you can make a variety if you so choose. Plus, who doesn’t love canning jars?

Still need more reasons? They’re super easy to make. Don’t believe me?

You can find the tutorial here. And if you wanted needed (we all know how little time brides have to DIY) to simplify even more, you could just use ready-made pie crusts and canned fruit fillings instead of making them from scratch.

The best part? You can make them ahead of time and freeze them! Canning jars were meant to be easily
stacked and stored.

Once you’re ready to serve them, just take them out of the freezer, pop them in the oven (canning jars are made to handle high temperatures- see the tutorial for details on this), and an hour later, voila they’re done and ready to eat!

I know I would love to receive (or give) one of these as a gift! Are you making edible favors? If so, what’cha making?

I have seen this before and love the idea… but how do you keep them cold during the reception?? That is the only issue. :(

OMG. We aren’t doing favors but now I might have to rethink. The FMIL cans and just taught me last summer! I guess with these you can’t really “seal” them so you have to freeze..which makes it harder logistically :-(

I absolutely LOVE these! I have been considering doing something like this for favors, but started trying to find other ideas because I thought it would be too much work. I was wrong! The tutorial makes it so simple!

Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this! You just helped us finally make a decision for our favors =D

(Also I am bookmarking that site, so much great stuff! Awesome find!)

So freaking awesome! This would be perfect for our summer wedding, we love pies. Instead though, we’re giving our guests little jars of homemade vanilla, so they can use that to make their own delicious baked goods.

These are actually on my list of possible favors–same tutorial! We are serving pie and instead of sending home messy pie pieces in boxes we thought to do these. We’ll see what we do–got to convince mom first that they aren’t too time consuming.

i saw that and thought it was fabulous. but since i don’t like fruit based pies like that, not sure if i’d be able to swing it. i mean, pumpkin pie just doesn’t look as awesome as those!

@tea: @tea: I make a pumpkin pie like dessert called pumpkin crumble that might work. All you do is put white cake mix on the prepared pumpkin pie gloop, drizzle melted butter over that, and then sprinkle chopped pecans over everything. It doesn’t even need a bottom crust and it is delicious!

I was totally onboard with this.. but then you realize the issues.

1. If you do freeze them, do you give them out frozen? If so, how do you keep them cold, and are people not annoyed that they have to drive home with a cold thing. Not to mention that they then have to put them in their freezer immediately, not so great for Out of towners.

2. If you cook them, you must do so within about 4-8 days of the wedding. Otherwise they will go bad before you give them out. After you bake them, you can’t refreeze them, so you have to store them in a fridge. Unlike canning, they are not fully sealed, therefore they cannot keep for more than 4-8 days. And in the week before your wedding do you really want to be baking 100 minipies.

3. If you make them before hand, where are you actually storing them? Are you taking up your freezer space with 150 little mini-pies

4. Do you make one flavor? Do you make two? Do you make one for each person, or each couple?

If someone has some good answers for these questions, you would be my hero! I have wanted to do this since about August 2009, but all of the family and the man keep saying no, due to these reasons. Any thoughts?

@cuddlecup: That sounds delicious!!!

@Liz: Hi Liz! I think you brought up some good issues.
I personally would give them out already baked- which means you could prep and freeze them sometime before the wedding and then bake them over a few/several days before your big day. Depending on how many will fit in your oven- you could probably get 100 done in 2 days as long as you aren’t planning on baking anything else and you are chilling at home.

At our wedding, we were fortunate enough to have my husband’s aunts bake and package all our favors for us (which I will discuss during my recaps!) It would be awesome if you had a few friends that would let you “borrow” their ovens… then you could just hand over the frozen pre-made pies to them and have them bake them. If you are getting married in the fall… you could just box up your mini pies once they are ready and keep them cool in your garage!

I for one am crazy enough that I WOULD take on this task the week before my wedding and I would clear out an entire freezer to get it done :)
In our case, we had a lot of favors left over. So unless you plan on putting one at each table setting, you could probably make one or two per group and be OK.
As for flavors… you could mix it up and have everyone get a random flavor or have one flavor so everyone gets the same.
Hope this helps!!! Good luck!
