Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

One of the items Mr. Spaniel and I were really excited to register for was a soda siphon.

Maybe I'll Get Them a Toaster... : wedding los angeles registry Siphon

(sourceMaybe I'll Get Them a Toaster... : wedding los angeles registry )

We sort of fancy ourselves as (future) DIY-ers: he has a little herb and vegetable garden growing outside of our apartment door, and I like to make things (both for fun and to save money—mostly we make a lot of our own household cleaners and usually cook from scratch). We also are both really into healthy living, but not because it’s always pleasurable—sometimes we have to find little hacks to make doing what’s good for us into something we like doing.

Specifically, for me, giving up caffeinated, sugary sodas was (and continues to be) a huge struggle—the only thing I’ve found that helps at all is drinking coffee or tea in the mornings (getting my caffeine in, which I hear isn’t that bad in moderation), and carbonated water with lunch. So I’ve got the healthy part, but what about the money-saving part? Bottles of San Pellegrino sparkling water are expensiveMaybe I'll Get Them a Toaster... : wedding los angeles registry , yo, especially when you go through as many of them as I do, so we both thought it would be great(!) to add a soda siphon to our Amazon.com registry.

Now Mama Spaniel likes to keep abreast of what has been purchased from our registries—it’s like a new hobby of hers; she checks more closely than I do!—but when she told me that the soda siphon had been purchased, she was laughing. I didn’t understand why—it’s such a cool and unique gift! But then she explained: apparently, the same way an American couple without a wedding registry is sure to end up with three toasters and two blenders (or so the warnings go), my step-father told her that in Israel, where he’s from, every couple ends up with a soda siphon or two as a wedding gift. Huh… how useful! :) Who knew?

Did you learn anything interesting in the registry process?

I have a soda siphon. I don’t think I’ve ever used it. I have used my cream whipper though. They are pretty cool. Only problem is that the cartridges have to be shipped ground.

What a neat gift! Also, my mom was queen of my registry. She would call every day to tell me what had been purchased or to ask about choices I had made or suggest better options. She was always bemused that I never checked my registry, but with her on the case I didn’t have to.

You gave up soda? You’re amazing! I totally have never heard of a soda siphon before.

(So…why do people in Israel often give soda siphons?)

@Miss Lace: I don’t know, but it sounds like the lead-in to a good joke. ;) Maybe soda water is just really popular there, and toast isn’t?

I’m big on surprises so I havn’t checked my registry at all. I was so excited when I got my first gift in the mail (from a relative whos unable to attend the wedding) that I called my FI — thinking he’d be soooo excited about the pampered chef measuring cups we now own!

I’m intrigued now! I gave up soda Dec 31st (I swear I was addicted to it) and have no want/need for it anymore!! I replaced it with seltzer, and that stuff is cheap!

That is hysterical! And now, I totally want one of those…Can you use them to make flavored sodas?? Like you, I am addicted to soda…Unlike you, I have no plans to quit anytime in the near future! But I would like to save some money on my habit…

I, too, gave up soda, after drinking 2-3 Diet Pepsis a day for probably 20 years. I went cold turkey 2 years ago this month, and it’s only lately that I can be in the same room as free cokes and not feel the craving to grab one! I have to have my latte in the morning now otherwise it’s really hard to get going.

In Hungary where my family is from they often buy juice syrup and add carbonated water to it. I think that is more normal in other countries and that’s probably why you might get a couple of those for a registry.

The first time i visited i actually drank the syrup before they added the water b/c i didn’t know. My aunts and uncles still laugh about it.

I totally want one! I drink a ton of seltzer, having given up even diet sodas over a year ago.
