Mrs. Pencils's Picture
Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MD Age and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non Profit Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Morningside Inn About Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!
About Mrs. Pencils

So we had milled, and filed, and now it was time to engrave and buff our wedding rings!

We began the day at 9:30 after an hour drive to very small town in Virginia. Within three hours, we had soldered our rings. We took a break to head to a local burger joint and indulged in a greasy, delicious cheeseburger and yummy fries, all paid for as a part of the overall expenses.

After that, we headed back to the shop to finish our rings! After the filing process I showed you, we were ready for the final steps!

First up, we engraved the rings with “18K” and our personal messages.

It doesn’t look like an engraving machine does it?

Mr. Pencils and I chose our own unique messages. I went with:

Mr. Pencils’ chose something he used to say to me every day when we first began dating: “Wo ai ni”- “I love you” in Chinese.

We then handed our rings off to expert Chris, who took a handsaw to create grooves and a design in our rings. Can you believe these were HAND SAWED?

Now that we had the nearly final product, it was time to buff and make them shiny!

Buff the outside:

Buff the inside:

And, after a short sonic clean, they were done. It was 4 pm, and we had just created.our.wedding.rings. It was amazing.

Yes, that’s me in the reflection.

I was so excited!

When we first contacted the Wedding Ring Workshop we were looking for a meaningful wedding experience. What we ended up getting was that and more—we met a really fantastic jeweler in our expert Chris, we spent a Saturday enjoying each other and learning a new skill, and we made.our.wedding.bands. In the end, I really feel that whatever the expense was, the day was worth it, as we got all of these things plus lunch, a bottle of champagne, and a disposable camera.

The entire cost of the experience was 1,780 dollars. This comes out to about 890 dollars per ring. This cost was based on the price of gold at the time of our booking back in November of 2009. When I consider how much custom designed rings would be, I feel like we got a great deal, and a great experience.

The best part? We asked Chris how long it would have taken him to make these two rings that took us seven hours. His answer? Probably about two hours.

That’s why he’s the professional. :)

Did you end up spending a bit more in an area that, in the end, was totally worth it?

They are so terrific! If we hadn’t already had our rings made and lived near Virginia, I would’ve LOVED to do something like that!

That’s so cool. Your rings are really special.

I’m also glad you shared your engraving! We struggled with that, but finally came up with something fun and meaningful. (I originally wanted iSwimiBikeiRuniDo which is similar to what’s on our ipds–iSwimiBikeiRuniPod)

I am seriously considering this. There is a workshop less than 3 hours from me. Thanks for taking the pictures and posting them.

That is SO cool!! The rings are beautiful and it’s so cool and sentimental that you actually made them yourselves!!

We splurged on our wedding bands too, with the reasoning that we’ll be wearing them every day for forever so we wanted them to be well-made and beautiful. And of, are they ever!! : ) Can’t wait to wear mine in July!

When you had initially posted about these I really and still do loved the idea! It sounds like such an awesome experience. But unfortunately with the expected opening date of the NY location unknown and the price tag we just couldn’t swing it. :( The quote I got would’ve been almost doubled our band budget. :(

OMG I totally want to do this, but Mr. Jelly doesn’t really want to because he thinks we’ll mess it up. Maybe I can convince him by showing him your post! Beautiful!
