Mrs. Nachos's Picture
Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
About Mrs. Nachos

Imagine this…

You wake up and hit the bathroom, ready to hop in the shower. And uh oh, is that the guy upstairs you hear walking into his bathroom? Um, yes, it sounds like he’s wearing lead shoes and you’re happy for him as you actually hear his content sigh as he is having his morning pee. And fart. Which you can hear, too. Not kidding. As soon as you turn on the shower, you realize you will be taking another arctic splash as he is getting in the shower at the same time you are and stealing all the hot water. You tell yourself, ‘hey, it’s refreshing!’ as you cry on the inside as you get in. Once you’re ready to leave, you walk out to your car only to find that the guys downstairs parked like assholes. Again. And you have an SUV…

(source – modified by yours truly)

You want to throw something through their bedroom window and yell, “those white lines are there for a reason, people!” But no, you take the high road and you crawl into your car through the trunk.

You get to work, then, well, work, and make it home. You pull up to your parking spot, only you have to get out of your car and move the garbage cans that the guys upstairs pulled into your spot instead of walking them the 3 feet to the fence. Then you pull off the greatest parking job of the year – squeezing a 4 foot car into a 3 foot spot. And oh yea, it’s laundry night! Only you can’t do your laundry because the outside stairs that you have to walk down are frozen over. As flashbacks of the purple-ist butt bruise you never ever wanted from last year shoot through your mind (I have pictures but I’ll spare you), you decide you can wear your granny panties tomorrow and feel less pain. And guess what? You get to do it all over again tomorrow!

That’s my life, people. Every. Damn. Day.

And that’s not the worst of it… since renting in Chicago, I’ve dealt with rats in my kitchen. No heat for a WEEK during -5 degree weather. Plaster walls slowly caving in. Broken appliances that have taken 2 months to be fixed. Head injuries needing stitches from the layout of the building. Butt injuries (see above). Floods in my kitchen. Gas leaks. Being charged a late fee on rent when they in fact cashed the check a week before it was due. Downed wires in the backyard. And no, I’m not living in the slums, I rent in a great part of the city for way too much money.

2 weeks ago, I had had enough.

When I finally got into my home sweet home, I turned to Mr. Nachos and told him we needed to buy a house. With no one above or below us to steal our hot water, or washing machine, or parking space. For what we’re paying now, we could have a beautiful home all our own. I had reached a breaking point.

I honestly didn’t know how he’d react. Mr. Nachos is the planner; I’m the spontaneous one. He’s cautious with money, and I figure if you have it, you should enjoy it. Sure I save, but I also work hard for the money! And I want to enjoy the things in life it can bring. So let me tell you, when he immediately was on board, I was shocked. We had planned on buying next year; a year more of renting once the wedding would be but a distant memory. But after renting for as long as we both have, we are both ready.

Not a day goes by that I don’t think about having a fenced in yard for the doggies, a driveway and garage where I don’t have to scrape a foot of Chicago snow off of my car in the winter, and a washer/dryer of which I know its history. A place with no one walking in shoes above me at 4:30 in the morning, or farting in the bathroom above me. Unless of course, it’s Mr. Nachos.

So we met with Mr. N’s aunt this past Sunday…

I’ll Have a Full Plate of Nachos, Please : wedding relationships st thomas House Hunting

And we’re going house hunting tomorrow!! To get the tax credit, we’ll have to be under contract before we leave for the wedding, but I say, bring it on! This Nacho works best under pressure.

Are you taking on any other huge endeavors while planning your wedding?

Sorry that your current situation kinda stinks… but it makes for a really funny blog entry. LOL Oh & there’s nothing wrong with leaving a nasty note on a neighbor’s car. We did it last week to the guy blocking our driveway juuuust enough to not get our car in.

Congrats!! Making the decision feels amazing, doesn’t it? My FI and I are both a good balance of love-to-save and love-to-spend, so we have to take turns playing each role to make sure we’re doing both, and I was the one who had to convince him last year that it was time for us to make the plunge and buy a home. This tax credit is absolutely unreal and who knows how long it’s going to last, not to mention that interest rates and home prices are at historic lows - as I said it then, we might not ever have an opportunity like this. So great that you’ll get to move past the horrors of renting, best of luck with the process!

You will looove being a homeowner, it will be worth the extra work. I’m in the opposite situation, wedding planning and selling my house to move to another state for my FI :( Good luck!

Ooooo! So so exciting! I want to buy a house so badly, but my Mr. is not on board right now. I wish you all the best of luck house hunting. If you get stressed about it, just remember, I’d do anything to have that stress right now!

Oh, congrats on this decision! You are going to have so much fun house hunting. Our time looking for a home was very adventurous (we bought a foreclosure) but it only took us less than a month to find “the one” so I’m confident you can do it on time to get the tax credit as well!

ENJOY! (Make sure you bring a small pad and take notes after each house, and don’t forget your camera!)

I went through this same thing about a year ago! We were planning an August wedding & decided to start house-hunting in April. Closed on our house June 30, moved the 2nd week in July, married the 3rd week of August. Throw in a week-long out of town work conference, and I was one busy gal! You can do it though, and it will be SO worth it in the end!

Congrats! My fiance and I also bought a house after we got engaged. I basically had to postpone all wedding planning for about 3 months while we house-searched and moved. And we’ll still be getting married <1 year after he proposed! Despite the time crunch, it was the right decision. You will LOVE owning your own home! =)

Congratulations! We’re planning to save up for a down payment next year after we’re no longer saving for a wedding. Which is fine, because my big endeavor is that I’m currently in medical school and it’d be best to wait until I’m in residency to buy, because we don’t know yet where my residency might take us.

Hurray! Congrats to you!!

We bought our house and moved in about 3 months before our wedding. Fun times, fun times. And for the same reasons as you. We lived in a REALLY NICE area/apartment paying WAY too much, for the kind of neighbors/noises/problems we were experiencing. We were So Over It.

Congratulations on making the decision to buy and getting out of your fart apartment! :) My FI and I made the somewhat spontaneous decision to buy this week too! We had been planning to start looking later this year, but suddenly realized on Monday that we are eligible for the tax credit (didn’t think we were because it hasn’t been 3 years yet since I’ve owned a home…but he hasn’t owned so we are eligible since we aren’t married yet)! We got our mortgage preapproval letter today and are moving forward straight away to meet the close deadline!
