Mrs. Jellyfish's Picture
Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!

My Wish List: The Saber Arch

March 12th, 2010 @ 12:18 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

One of the things I really, really want to have at our wedding is the saber arch. The saber arch is a privilege that only military personnel get to have and I think it’s so cool! Here are some pictures:

I’m pretty sure we’re going to be able to do it. The only problems are 1) finding guys to do it and 2) getting sabers. Mr. Jelly has a lot of Air Force buddies who will also be invited to the wedding, so theoretically it shouldn’t be a problem, but many of them could be gone or might not be able to come because of distance. There’s always the option of having the honor guard from base come and do it, but that would add 8 very expensive guests that we don’t even know to our already bloated guest list. The second issue is where to get the sabers. We might be able to get them from a local detachment, and they would be included with the honor guard guys. Hopefully we can get some, otherwise we might have to resort to this:

Light saber arch?

Here’s hoping it will all work out!

Have you ever experienced a Saber Arch, or did you have one at your wedding? Who participated?

My FI is in the AF and participated in Honor Guard. He said that usually the guys participating do not stick around for the wedding (as they don’t know you and would rather spend their weekends with their family/friends rather than weddings every weekend), so maybe your guest list wouldn’t experience any bloat at all?

Oh, I think they’re so awesome! My dad was in the Air Force, and when my parents got married 40+ years ago, they had a saber arch. It was easy enough to get people to do it, though, because he had just graduated from the AF academy, so pretty much all the groomsmen and male guests on his side (not to mention family members) were officers with sabers.
Sadly we won’t be having one, because that’s what I get for marrying a civilian :p

I saw a sabre arch at just about every wedding we attended last year. And we’re planning on doing one at our wedding. Hopefully someone can swing by West Point and pick them up–but you touched on a great point, there’s no telling if there will be enough people there to do, especially with deployments and distance.

We’ll have a saber arch at our wedding - it’s one of the things I’m most excited for. My fiance is graduating from an academy three weeks before we get married and we’re hoping enough of his friends are there to be our saber bearers.

Have your FI get in touch with the Honor Guard. Ours showed up to the wedding 45 minutes before the ceremony started. It’s free and they don’t accept donations (ours didn’t, at least). Having them at our wedding was one of the best parts of our day!

I’ve been to one military wedding where they had it and it was cool. I’m glad my husband didn’t get to see the Light Sabre Arch before our wedding ;)

Ahh… the sabre arch scared me, especially the butt swat! :) The FI decided he wanted a civilian wedding so we will be forgoing dress blues and sabre arches. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

My HS best friend’s wedding had a sabre arch since the groomsmen were military buddies. She bought his sabre from base. The light sabres could be a fun way to incorporate friends and family into the welcoming!

That’s awesome! And is it really sad that when I saw the title of this post, my brain immediately went to light sabers like in the last picture?

I want one too! But FH doesn’t think enough of the guys from his base are going to be able to attend the wedding due to deployments, etc. But it is on my wish list as well; perhaps the groomsmen can do it instead of the Honor Guard/Color Guard.

I hope you end up doing it and PLEASE post photos! (:

My fiance is a mountie, and in Canada the federal police force is a paramillitary organization. So, we’ll be having an arch, but with lances. He just asked his closest friends that are members, and called up our province’s headquarters to borrow the lances.
