Wedding Balloons?

March 12th, 2010 @ 6:31 pm by Mrs. Dachshund

The other day I emailed Mr. Doxie and casually mentioned that it might look nice to use balloons as ceremony decoration. He couldn’t picture what I was talking about, so I responded with this photo so that he could get a feel for what I was imagining:

“Wut?” was his only response.

I laughed, and then sent him genuine inspiration photos.

The balloon arch and pillars aren’t really our style. Those large, perfectly round balloons, however? I think they’re incredibly modern and beautiful if done correctly. Do you remember this spread from MS Weddings a few months back?

I love them; they’re like a fresh take on paper lanterns.

I’ve been fretting a bit over our ceremony decoration. Our ceremony is going to be outdoors, in a large, open grassy area. Our venue offers a traditional white metal archy thing, but I dunno. I didn’t want an arch decorated with flowers; I wasn’t sure it would feel cohesive with the rest of our details.

Then, I saw this wedding featured at Green Wedding Shoes. It pretty much solidified my desire for balloons-as-ceremony-decor.

*sigh*

And think of the pictures we’ll be able to take after the ceremony!

I found these pictures late one afternoon while I was still at work, and I sketched out how I think I’d like the balloons set up.

I thought the balloons would make a pretty backdrop for the wedding party. In my head, I imagined them to be red and a pretty, pale aqua.

I found these, and quickly ordered them to see if I liked the colors in person.

Weellll, I liked the red. The blue wasn’t aqua, but teal. Like Cupcake’s teal. Sooo, I didn’t know what to do. Should I go with red and white?

I drew up a few “mock-ups.”

I’m not sure what we’re going to do. The balloons are affordable at ~$2.75 a piece, and the shipping was very fast.

Which do you think would look better? Would you ever use balloons as part of your wedding decor?

I wish I could do this, but both of my sisters are allergic to latex, so they’d both kill me!

The really round balloons look very modern…red and/or white would look great in wedding party pictures.

i like both ideas but the white alone alittle bit more. I also love these big balloons for the reception hall but decided to buy linens instead.

p.s. that first photo is hilarious.

I adore this. I wish I had seen it forever ago when I was first considering balloons and then nixed it. I am definitely revisiting the notion.

Wow! I didn’t even think of using balloons, but this could look amazing! I love all white :)

I think this is a very beautiful idea. My only concern is that the balloons could pop during the ceremony at the wrong moment? Maybe that would be ok with you. Again, I love the idea and the pictures are amazing.

@Mrs. N: The balloons are sooo big I’m sure they would be suuper loud if they popped. I’d probably pee my pants! I know I’m going to be a huge ball of nerves anyway!

Buuut, they’re really thick latex. I can’t imagine them just randomly popping on their own.

I love them. I used white 36″ balloons for our ceremony and the photos after. Althought the wind picked up during the sunset ceremony (even blew my veil around), we didn’t have any problems with the balloons popping. Balloons of that size tend to have thicker walls and are much more sturdy than say an average birthday balloons (or one of those lovely balloon wedding arches - lol!).

Love this! Def. Red and white (I mean, if you’ve decided against the balloon-in-balloon balloon columns, of course ;) ).

@Miss Snow: I put a balloon in your balloon so you can… flashback to the 80’s while you flashback to the 80’s?

/facepalm. Sorry : )

I got really scared when I saw that first picture! It’s amazing to me to think that was trendy at one time. One of the first things I told my fiance about our decor was “no balloons!” but I like your big round ones :)

balloons are so pretty! i really love how round and modern they look! :) (just don’t release them afterwards into the air, they can get caught on powerlines and cause outages!)

these pictures are so great - and what an awesome idea. I think I am going to borrow your idea as I had no idea what to do at our outdoor ceremony and this would totally go with our whimsical wedding theme. Balloons at wedding have really came a long way from the first picture.
