Mrs. Argyle's Picture
Mrs. Argyle, St. Louis Age and Occupation: 24, Project Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Pilot Engagement Date: February 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Jewel Box in Forest Park and Windows on Washington About Me: I'm a true Midwestern girl (born and raised), lover of red wine, reality TV and the entire J.Crew catalog. About Mrs. Argyle

So, back when Mr. Argyle and I were trying to figure out what we were going to do for our centerpieces (see: no flowers), we couldn’t agree on a design.

I had this brilliant idea to use lanterns. He agreed (Yes!). Now, the question was, how do we use these lanterns? Do we hang them, connect them to dowels? What?

So, we agreed to hang them. But after much thought, we still felt that our tables were going to be bleh if we hung all of them. So I scoured the web for some good ideas, and found this:

What to Do with Our Paper Lanterns? : wedding decor st louis Picture019 Photobucket

I loved the idea of semi-hanging them from dowel rods, so they had the appearance of a true centerpiece, but were still hanging.

And, we would still be able to light them up. So, all excited, I share it with the Mr.

BAM! Shot down like a bad pick-up line. His feedback? It reminded him a bit too much of traditional Chinese lanterns. I didn’t really see his point, but nonetheless I was a bit disappointed. (For the record, if we had gone this route, the centerpieces would not be that tall if placed on our tables. That would be crazy!)

So, what do you think? Do they look like traditional Chinese lanterns if they were hung from dowels?

I don’t understand the problem if they look like traditional lanterns. They’re pretty!

It looks fun and festive. A little bit of informal flair, but not giving away the formality of a wedding!

Sounds like he just isn’t a fan of the look in general. Personally I love paper lanterns along a string hung overhead or on the side of an area, maybe he’d prefer that?

i too love them:) I am also trying to find centrepieces that don’t involve flowers as well as an archway of some sort that can work on hardfloors .. and i love this idea for both of them. Will have to show h2b :)

First of all, the ones in the picture are hung from the end of bamboo, which you can find very inexpensively at fishing stores or places like World Bazaar….because the ends are less thick, they naturally bend. I see his point, but I also think they look very contemporary. I think the “bamboo” might be what is making them look a little oriental, but just spray paint them and they’ll look much more contemporary….you could paint them white, black, silver….whatever! I think it would help alot!

I think they look very modern in the picture you posted and not Chinese at all.

I live in China and they hardly ever use these types of lanterns, so tell him no worries!

@LittlestBirds: Actually, over half of the tables we will be hanging lanterns. We’ve been trying to find some way to use the lanterns on the other tables.

@ColaJae: Actually, the original inspiration photo we found uses wooden dowels - I found this photo and had to share it with him again to try and convince him. No luck :(

@mrspaetz: Yes, true, but we can use them in a way that isn’t true to their origin.

@jrw0088: That’s exactly what one of my best friends said!

I love tthis idea, after seeing it the other day, I started looking for baskets that where close, but can’t find anything (except for REALLY expensive umbrella baskets. Any ideas?
