Registry Revelations

March 15th, 2010 @ 6:41 pm by Ms. Stripes

Our dialogue/feelings about having a registry have come a long freakin’ way since we got engaged.

We started out saying that we wouldn’t have a registry, weren’t little grub monsters and didn’t need any kitchen crap anyways.

We then progressed to saying maybe, just maybe, we could have a honeymoon registry because we sure would like to travel.

The other day we pondered putting a few global knives and a fancy food processor on the list.

And then last weekend I found myself standing in Heath Ceramics wondering if our friends would really buy us twenty dollar coffee cups.

Is it even ethical to own a twenty dollar coffee cup?

They are beautiful and hand-crafted right here in California…

Anyway I guess in an effort to maintain my street cred with the indie bride crowd I’d hoped to have some intrinsic, knee-jerk revulsion towards the idea of a registry and well, I just don’t. I mean who doesn’t love presents? And as Lil’ Stripe, aka bridesmaid K, aka one wise married lady once told me, “They’re gonna get you presents anyway; do you really want doilies??”

So I guess we’re having a registry because we definitely do not want doilies. What about you? Have you had any registry revelations?

Honeymoon Registry, FTW! We can’t afford to go on our own since we’re paying for the wedding. We’ve already gotten about a third of the cost and we’ll probably just take the plunge and pay for it ourselves soonish.

YES! We feel exactly the same way! I don’t want any more stuff, what do we do? How do you ask nicely for Ikea gift cards, that would be perfect for us! Do you know anyone that has had any luck just not registering?

hahah…. if we’re being honest, I’d say no, a $20 coffee cup is not ethical. imagine how upset you’d be if one chipped!

ditto @daydreamwanderer…

We registered for our honeymoon. We love traveling, and have lived together for several years, so we have all the things our house needs. We love traveling and our family love so support that.

I think we went through a similar evolution. But just admit it - using the scan-machine rocks. ;)

I used to be stressed about registering for higher priced items, but I realized if people don’t want to get them, they don’t have to.

I’ve had a few revelations after not wanting to start a registry:

1- You can make a registry totally practical and get good-quality items that you WILL need and use
2- You have to think of the future, not just now….eventually, my fiance and I are going to be hosting the family Easter and Christmas dinners, and we will need china and serving ware
2a - If you register for china that includes soup bowls at $100 a pop, you’re probably going to get a tenth of the things you need to own a complete set of china…and then you’re stuck spending thousands trying to complete your china set
3- Some people expect a registry, and if you don’t make one, they’re just going to go out and buy you something weird that you don’t want/need

It’s inevitable that people will get you gifts, so I figure, why not make it easy for them and easy for us? They don’t have to rack their brains wondering what we want and need, we don’t have to return things after the wedding that didn’t want or need

Love love looove the honeymoon registry idea, but I have so many questions about it! Where do you go for it- online (I’ve seen several sites that do them) or through a travel agent? If online, which site? Are you specifying items that people pay for, or just having guests funnel $$ into one (hopefully large) pot that you can distribute how you please on your honeymoon? Is the person/service who hosts the registry getting a cut of whatever is contributed/purchased?

I had to take a step back when we were considering registering for a $200 toaster.

Now our reg. is a random smattering of stuff that does not go together. Needs to be fixed, pronto.

I had the same progression - no registry, honeymoon registry, traditional registry. I figure if they’re gonna get me gifts anyway, at least guide them in the right direction.

Someone once told me that this was the only time in life people would be lining up to buy us presents. If we didn’t want weird stuff, we had better sign up. That was a good enough reason for me!

Oh yes, once I got a hold of the scanning gun any preconceived ideas i had about the registry went out the window. Entering the store is dangerous!

My honey dragged me kicking and screaming to register. I love what we got, but registering for it was just not my style :)

i was the same way! mostly because we really, really need the cash. my mom pretty much forced us to do a registry though, because her friends “always buy presents, it’s traditional!” i figured if they’re going to get us gifts regardless, i’d rather have some nice dishes and pots than a porcelain rooster or hand-crocheted washcloths.

@FutureRicioli: try honeyfund.com. that’s where my honeymoon registry is!

I will argue that a $20 coffee cup is actually much more ethical than a $2 cup from IKEA. Or let’s be honest, a 69c cup from IKEA. That $20 allows someone to make a living wage from their ceramics business. After all, it’s the endless quest for cheap crap that forces Americans to defer to products made in third world countries just to save a buck.

Off my soapbox now.

You can totally make the registry into your own. I liked Wishpot. In addition to the household stuff, we got wine. :)
