The Longest Run is Done

March 15th, 2010 @ 12:57 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

Yesterday, in spite of gale-force winds and driving rain (I think anyone in the Northeast knows what I am talking about!) I completed the longest run of my training program. The weather was pretty much horrendous but it had to be done so I donned my best water-resistant running wear and set off with the goal of 21 miles. Two hours and forty minutes, five blisters, 16 ounces of Cytomax and many a tear later, I was finished. And damn, I felt proud of myself, although I very closely resembled this cat afterwards…

Seriously, I was SOAKED!

Even though I didn’t want to go, I forced myself to do the run anyways, for several reasons.

One, it might be similar conditions for the actual marathon so it’s better to train in all weather conditions just in case. Two, running in that kind of weather makes one mentally tough, which is another good trait to have when training for a marathon. And three, if I didn’t go on that day, I would have any other time to do the run, so I pretty much had to go.

I’m not going to lie, running 21 miles pretty much sucks. Running 21 miles in the pouring rain and crazy 30-mph wind sucks even more. BUT… it’s done and now I have exactly five weeks to taper my training before the big race. And I have to say, marathon-prep has done wonders for my body (abs o’ steel, yo!) Hopefully I will continue to train after the race so I still look good for my wedding almost two months later.

It feels good to make it this far in my training, somehow (miraculously) un-injured (knock on wood, knock on wood!) and still enthusiastic about running. I’ve ran, I’ve strength-trained, I’ve stretched and I’ve mentally prepared, so bring it on, Boston Marathon, I’m ready for ya!

Anyone else training for a race a month or two before your wedding?

Yep. I dread any time I have to run more than 15. But, when I do, it’s great feeling after.

Congrats! I didn’t even leave my house yesterday ;o)

I’m training for a half on April 4. I’m a little nervous because I haven’t been able to get in as much training as I would have liked. But I figure, I did it in January, and I can do it again!

I’m currently training for a 10 K and will also finish about 2 months before my wedding. I did P90X prior to starting my training, and so far I feel it has helped a lot! I live in Vancouver, so running in the rain - yup I hear you :) Great job on the marathon training!

You are awesome!! Congrats to you, that’s such an accomplishment! I probably would have watched the housewives marathon instead of running.

How about running one 3 weeks after the wedding? Am I crazy? Ha! I’ve rearranged my taper schedule to accommodate the wedding and honeymoon, so *hopefully* it’ll all work out. At least I know what I’m getting into, having run the same one before! Let’s hope.

YOU GO GIRL!!!

Rock on - that’s quite a little clippy pace! I am training for a 1/2 marathon about a month before the wedding. I wanted to do a full, but haven’t had the time to train (because of the wedding).

Congrats and good luck!

wow, i cannot believe you ran in that weather. i could barely walk on nyc streets. it was brutal. good for you! chances are the actual marathon will be nowhere near those difficult conditions, so you are set!

Congrats on pushing through the crappy weather…and I hope Boston treats you better (obv. no guarantees!) Watching the beantown marathon last year inspired me to run (my first) in NYC last November…what a great race. Best of luck!

Wowzers! Good job! I’ve done one half marathon, and am going to do another half in July. Training for 13 miles is stressful enough. I can’t imagine doubling that.

I’ve heard people who train for full marathons say that you really learn a lot about yourself. And to run in that kind of weather is majorly impressive — way to go!

I like running in the rain, but for no more than 2-3 miles!

Holy Crap!! All of you ladies are amazing. It’s hard enough for me to do 2 miles at the gym on a daily basis, let along that in the rain… times 10!

Congratulations on your LAST long training run (in super crappy weather nonetheless)! I hope Boston brings you bluer skies, but if not you are ready for anything! I have done two halves and will be doing another, 3 weeks before my wedding. No full marathons….yet. How many marathons have you done?
