Hair-spiration

March 16th, 2010 @ 6:06 pm by Mrs. Hot Dog

I’ve always known that I was never going to be a veiled bride. It’s really just not my style. So, right off the bat, I started looking at alternative hair accessories. Enter the hair flower.

GAWgeous! But guess what’s NOT gorgeous? The price tag! I started searching for the perfect one on Etsy and was overcome with sticker shock. Are ya kiddin’ me!? $40 for some fabric, beads, and a hair clip? I think not. I could totally do this myself.

The first step was finding the right style and a tutorial. Easy enough. I found this one on my first search! After less than 30 minutes, I ended up with this:

I used a faux peony and some miscellaneous beads. I’m such a bad blogger… I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures! BUUUUT, I redeemed myself when I decided to make some for my Hottie ’Maids with some flowers I had leftover from other projects.

First, I took the thing apart, removing all the “structure” pieces, so that it was floppy and looked more flowy.

And…. VOILA!

Hair-spiration : wedding cheyenne hair Amy015 This was easily one of the simplest projects I’ve done so far! They are going to look fab in my ladies’ hair. :)

What are you wearing in your hair?

What a great idea and you did an amazing job! Will you be putting them on the side or in an updo (either way will look great!)

I’ve had many similar reactions to prices! What is that flower made of? gold? diamonds?

The prices are especially ridiculous when you made such beautiful alternatives for a fraction of the price!

I’m undecided as to hair flower or veil, can I have both?

They look beautiful! I agree that many are way too overpriced. I’m thinking about making one for myself with summer right around the corner. :P

Those look great.
To eriqua– I am thinking I’ll wear the veil for the ceremony and some pics, then swap out to the flower for the rest of the pics and the party. Leaning towards getting a real flower since I have always wanted one but I love the pearl details these have.

Very nicely done! I’m impressed by all the people DIYing fascinators. I found several in the $20 range on Etsy so I’ll be going that route.

Such cute flowers! I am wearing a veil, but have been lusting after hair flowers. Perhaps I can do both?

These are all so gorgeous! Great job, lady! I love the color you chose for the bridesmaid flowers and the pretty pearl centers.

One thing I’ve learned since becoming an Etsy shop owner, though, is that there are reasons that things like handmade bridal hair flowers are priced the way they are. Whether it be expensive materials (white silk, freshwater pearls, and pretty crystals can get expensive fast), intensive labor (it takes a while to cut out all those layers of petals by hand), shop overhead (Etsy listing fees, packaging materials, wear and tear on things like nice crafting scissors and needles), and the time it takes to think of a new design/take nice pictures of the piece on a good, sunny day/advertise the shop/list the items on Etsy (which is waaay more time than it takes to actually make the item!), most Etsy sellers don’t make all that much profit for how much time and effort they put in.

Not to say that you don’t have every right to make your own gorgeous pieces, but I remember thinking that some things were so overpriced when I was doing my planning, and now I understand why they’re so expensive a little better! Just thought I’d share! Again, awesome job!

This are so lovely!!! Great Job!!

Do you remember where did you find the clips you attached the flower to? I thought they would be easy to find and cannot seem to find large enough ones anywhere! I’m attaching a clip to a big flower hairpin for me (I found it at Nordstroms in the purse dept and thought it would make a gorgeous hair accessory) — I also want to make a headband flower for my little flower girl (baby actually, she’s 9months and is going to look so cute with a giant pink flower on her wee head!). Thanks!
