Honeymoon Update!

March 16th, 2010 @ 10:58 am by Mrs. Cola

A while back I shared that Mr. Cola and I will be staying in a private house on the beach in Kauai for our honeymoon.  But due to the cost of flights, we’ve had to update our plans slightly.

I’d been stalking the flight prices from San Francisco to Kauai since last summer, always hoping they’d go down. The lowest I’d ever seen the one direct flight go was to $749 per person, which was last August or September. Still, we held off, hoping they’d go lower.

But now that we’re about three months away, we knew we had to pull the trigger on buying our plane tickets, but obviously we waited too long. As of last weekend, the direct flight we’d been wanting was at $1,212 per person! Seriously?

So we reluctantly started looking at flights with a connection. Usually if I’m flying by myself, I don’t mind a connection, but with Mr. Cola it’s another story. Every single time we fly together it seems that either my luggage gets lost, or we end up with delays the cause us to have to sprint through the airport to make our connection (And you know I’m never wearing comfy shoes! Heels just aren’t fun to run up escalators in!).

As it turned out, none of the other flight options worked very well for us on the way back from our honeymoon.

They all either involved leaving at the crack of dawn, which would be a waste because we’ve paid to stay in our rental house until noon our final day, or the flights were red-eyes, so we wouldn’t get home until the following morning and be stuck in the airport for a loooong time.

So what was our solution? We’re staying an extra day! Now our honeymoon will be 8 days long, and we will stay our final night in Waikiki, on Oahu! This means that we can take a midday flight to Oahu, and have 24 hours in Waikiki, before arriving home the following night at about 9PM. And the best part is, flying this way is only $744 per person!

We do have to pay for an extra night in a hotel on Oahu, but I found us an ocean view room a block from the beach for only $135 per night. Combined with a couple extra meals, we’re still spending way less than what the direct flight would have cost us.

And now this means we get to hike up to the top of Diamond Head Crater on Oahu, which I’ve wanted to do since seeing our friend’s pictures last summer:

We also plan to just walk around Waikiki and sightsee, as well as have a sunset dinner near the beach. I think that our new plan will be so much fun, since we will get to experience some of two Hawaiian islands now!

We’ve also nailed down our activities on Kauai. Tuesday night we’ll be attending a dinner luau at Mediterranean Gourmet, which is in walking distance down the beach from our rental house:

If the sea is calm one day, we will hike down to snorkel at the Queen’s Bath in Princeville (but only if the water is really calm; many people have been killed here by being swept off the rocks by unpredictable waves):

On Thursday we will be taking a 90 minute helicopter tour with Jack Harter Helicopters to view the beautiful scenery from above:

Saturday morning we will be taking a snorkel tour up the Na Pali coast with Na Pali Catamaran, one of only a few tours that leave from the north shore. Most tour operators leave from the south shore, and you waste a lot of the tour time just traveling to the north side of the island, which is where the Na Pali coast is located.

On top of these planned activities, we will also be spending a lot of time snorkeling in front of our rental house, and relaxing on the beach. But I just can’t take a vacation without at least a few activities!

Has the cost of airline tickets had any impact on your honeymoon planning? Aare you planning a relaxing or activity-packed honeymoon?

Diamond Head is really great–make sure you get an “I survived Diamond Head” t-shirt for the memories. :)

Yes, we wanted to wait it out because prices kept dropping and then suddenly, they skyrocketed and have held steady. We’re holding out a bit longer since we have a few months, but we need to buy tickets soon!

Yay for an extra day of honeymoon and awesome that you got a better price on flights! The places are gorgeous and I’m totally jealous as I absolutely love Hawaii! We’re not taking a honeymoon due to work schedules, but I would love to have a combo of relax and activity packed honeymoon!

Awesome plan! I’m glad it worked out for you. We totally booked our flights based on plane ticket costs…I literally just searched flights to different islands in the Caribbean, and nabbed the one that was the cheapest - St Lucia here I come.

What a great solution!!! You’ll love both islands!

While in Waikiki, you should go to the Mai Tai Bar at the Royal Hawaiian (pink landmark hotel on Waikiki beach) The bar has a great view, live music and a romantic atmosphere! Would be a great way to end your honeymoon ;-)

Ah I’m dealing with plane tix right now…but we’re actually getting married on Maui so we’re really hard pressed to get our tix. The cheapest flight for $640 leaves at some odd time and comes back at 5am on a Saturday…just not our ideal flights so I think we’re going to suck it up and just spend the money to get the right tix and be done with it.

Your honeymoon is going to be AMAZING! My family has a condo on Kauai, so I’ve grown up spending a lot of time there and it holds such a special place in my heart. You should be fine at Queen’s Bath! I go down there quite often and haven’t had any problems. It’s gorgeous!! Yay!

We booked out LA to Australia flights AGES ago and figured getting from the east coast to LA would be simple. Not the case. 1-way flights from Pittsburgh (where we’re getting married) to LAX are $500+ nonstop or $275+ w/ 1 connection, then another $200 for our oneway home to NYC at the end. Then we looked at flying home to NYC first then doing roundtrip NYC to LAX. I set a Kayak alert about 4 months ago and missed the ONE DAY when the RT flights were $300. Now they’re around $450, and I fear they’ll never be going any lower again. I’m so mad at myself!!

Thanks for the deets on the flight cost. I’ve been stalking flights from SoCal to the Big Island for our honeymoon and also haven’t seen anything lower than about $750. I was hoping they’d drop but sounds like they probably won’t so I should book now before they skyrocket!

We’re doing Hawaii too! FI has never been and I’ve only been to Kauai. I really want him to experience Kauai, but I also want to see Oahu and Maui. So, we’re undecided as of now.

You MUST go to Queen’s Bath. It is fantastic.

That’s a great solution! We only spent a limited time in Kauai, but we did a kayak up Wailua River to Secret Falls. http://www.aliikayaks.com/ It was a lot of fun, and you really feel like you’re on an adventure.

Man, we so did not want to leave our honeymoon. I might have cried, but you won’t get me to admit it.

Airline tickets have been around $2,400 each (yes each!) for us since we started looking =( Hopefully we’ll find a deal soon as well!

I’m so glad it worked out for you! Plus getting to spend an extra day on your honeymoon? Amazing! Ya can’t beat that!
