Mrs. Hot Wings's Picture
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
About Mrs. Hot Wings

Mama Hot Wings is a sassy and glamorous woman. And dang it, the woman is picky. She had a long “No” list:

  • No “stiff” material
  • No jackets
  • No strapless
  • Nothing too fussy
  • Nothing too expensive
  • No a long formal dress

I had only 2 requirements.

  • Gold/champagne/blue to match our colors
  • I insisted her dress suit her sass-factor.

When we first started trying on dresses, she liked more traditional dresses like this one.

I insisted these dresses didn’t show off her fun personality enough. So, we kept trying.

These next 2 were getting closer. Mama Hot Wings really liked the lace over bare skin look. She has beautiful skin, so I agreed. I couldn’t believe she wanted to wear these longer sleeved dresses in a summer wedding, though. I guess she’s not a sweater. Who knew?

And then this Jovani dress almost won. She looked really pretty, but she wasn’t sold on the price tag (~$600). By this point, I had convinced her she needed a fun, sassy dress.

And then we went to Christina’s Fashion. They specialize in Mother of the Bride/Groom dresses! I had never heard of the store before, but I’m so glad I found it. They have a tremendous selection of both traditional and “sassy” MOB/MOG dresses. The first dress that greeted us on the mannequin by the door sang to us! SANG, I tell you! And guess what? It just happened to be the one! The Tony Bowls Evening Collection Style TBE11073.

I would have never picked this dress from the online photos. Did I mention it’s actually a PROM dress? Prom dresses in my day certainly did NOT look like this. But I think Mama HOT Wings looks true to form: Sassy and glamorous. I think this dress is perfect for a Sassy Mother of the Bride attending her only daughter’s formal summer affair.

Did anyone else go the non-traditional MOB dress route? Where else can you find non-traditional dresses for MOBs/MOGs?

My mom found a really great dress at an Ann Taylor outlet store in our hometown. Not too fancy, but it still has some great accents on the dress to make it more her! It’s even a sassy purple color– perfect for my casual summer affair!

I went MOTB dress shopping 2 weeks ago and finally found her dress. I had gone with her a few times but couldn’t agree on one dress or the style or anything. The knot sent an email out about a local inventory sale at a local bridal boutique. I told her about it and but didnt say a thing. she was actually in town that day so we went. and she found a bridesmaids dress for her for a steal price of $20. beautiful dress reatils at about $399. not only was it the only one on her size perfect color and perfect fit it was also the perfect size and we both agreed on it. Yey for mom’s finding their dress!!!!!!

She looks beautiful in the dress. The dress is beautiful but my first thought was that it looks like a wedding dress. The MOB/MOG should never wear a dress that competes with the brides gown. It’s just toooooo much….The Jovanni looks like a wedding gown as well. The two blue dresses were gorgeous as well….

Just my honest opinion….

I will be the MOB for a 4th time in August!

@judithfriel: She’s short, so the dress won’t have a train look. And secondly, the tradition in Vietnamese culture is just different. Family members should be dressed up a lot! Hell, guests sometimes come in full sequinced gowns. We’re also having a formal wedding. I’m the woman in White, it’s hard to compete with that ;)

I’m not looking forward to MOTB/MOTG shopping. I have 3 mothers, the boy has 1. Plus my mum is plus sized and quite self conscious. She won’t wear a dress or a skirt either. Hopefully I can find a nice pant suit for her.

I love the dress your mum found, its so different and not at all ‘mumsy’
