After Alohas

March 17th, 2010 @ 10:04 am by Mrs. Sewing

How about a honeymoon?

Mr. Sew and I plan on leaving the day after our wedding, on a Sunday. I’ve heard a few questions of why I wouldn’t want to wait around in Hawaii for a little while to hang out with everyone, but honestly I don’t want to. Part of me thinks it’s utterly romantic to be whisked away right after the wedding. But most of me doesn’t want to be embarrassed around friends and family members after my first night as a married lady.

It was never a question of where we would go, of course. The nation of all things cute and amazing. Robot-Capital-of-the-World. Otaku-mecca. Anime-Heaven. Call it what you will, we’re going to Japan.

And with three weeks of precious saved-up vacation time, we’ll be going all over Japan.

Mr. Sew and his Dad (mostly his Dad) have been figuring out the logistics, which makes sense since Mr. Sew has lived there in the past, and his dad lives there currently. The main stops we’ll be making are via the solid line, and the still-not-decided-trip-to-Hokkaido is shown with the dotted line:

Now to keep me sane, I’m not going to try and think about the trip too much, because I’ll fall into the trap of excessive planning. Instead, I gave Mr. Sew a list of things we MUST do/see/etc. while we’re there.

1) We must go to Akihabara. Also known as the electronic and anime-capital, where I anticipate most of my souvenir money will be spent.

Wall of godzillas?

2) We must get some gratuitous anime scene replica shots. Tokyo tower, the outside of a high school, a temple or two, etc. Again, very otaku-ish behavior, but that’s what I am, and I’ll wear it proudly.

3) We must visit one (or more) of the below, anonymously purchased, by-the-hour hotel rooms. It IS a honeymoon, after all…

(source) on Love Hotels… not safe for work, but a very interesting/strange read…

4) We must try the regional specialty food from whatever region we happen to be in.

Okonomiyaki, Osaka style!

After Alohas : wedding honeymoon honolulu Wagyu (source)
Kobe Beef (Wagyu)!

5) We must visit a castle or two, simply because castles are cool, and history is cooler.

Bonus) I must see Gackt, Japanese rock star and the hottest man on earth (other than Mr. Sew!). :)

Just kidding. (But it would be super-amazing if we did.)

I think my demands are reasonable. Did I leave anything out?

And while Mr. Sew plans our awesome trip, I’ll brush up on my very-limited Japanese.

“Where is the bathroom?”

(Luckily, Mr. Sew can understand and speak (in broken-Japanese), so I’m not too worried by my lack of skills.)

In addition to being a place I’ve always wanted to visit, I think this fits our personalities perfectly. We are not sit-back-and-relax kind of people - we like busy things such as sightseeing and museums and exploring. What better place to visit than Japan?

Are you taking a honeymoon/minimoon/etc.? If so, what do you plan on doing? Something exciting? Something relaxing?

I lived in Nara for a year - I recommend you stop by on your way to Kiyumizu-dera and feed the tame deer! :)

And I’m sure you already know tons about where to go in Japan, but please say you will be making a stop to Miyajima island as well?

Can’t wait to see your honeymoon pics!

P.S. We are also taking off the day after instead of opting to spend more time with guests - we figure we’ll see them enough leading up to the festivities anyway.

OMG YES!!! I went to Japan in High School
(Nara, Osaka, Yaizu, Kyoto) and fell in LOVE! The Temple in Osaka was so, so pretty but damn it was hot in August…

Anyway, I’m totally jealous and am excited for your honeymoon recaps!

Your honeymoon sounds awesome! We actually considered Japan since Mr Trail Mix loves sushi more than anything in the world, possibly even more than me! Ultimately, we decided to save that trip for another time but I’ve always wanted to go to Japan, so I’ll just have to live vicariously through your recaps!

I fully approve of this honeymoon and wall of Godzillas.

I also have my fingers and toes crossed for a chance encounter with Gackt.

Out of curiosity, what is your opinion on natto?

@laur xyz: natto…I’m not the biggest fan, unfortunately. my aversion isn’t as bad as mr. sew’s though..he won’t go within 10 miles of the stuff! :P

Mt. Fuji is awesome! Are you guys going to try to do a onsen? Yamanouchi in the hot springs district is pretty awesome. Plus there are MONKEYS that like to take dips in the natural hot springs (not the public use ones)

And Okonomiyaki! YUM. (there’s a awesome place in NYC that we go to when we are up there that makes it) Make sure to get some takoyaki while you are in Osaka as well. It’s tastes better there than anyone else.

I second going to Miyajima. If you are heading to Hiroshima, it’s brilliant but depressing. Be ready to feel very, very sad.

Outside of Tokyo, go to Hakone and stay at a ryokan/have an onsen. (my blog entry: http://xoxokristin.blogspot.com/2010/02/honeymoon-in-tokyo-part-1-hakone.html)

If you are staying in Nagano, you should go to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park and watch the snow monkeys having an onsen. Stay in Yudanaka, I can recommend a great ryokan. There isn’t much in Nagano proper, I wasn’t impressed.

Himeji is under construction and covered in giant scaffolding so that’s out. I haven’t seen it either and we are leaving in October :(

Love hotels are amazing, the cheesier the better. Hubby and I have done one outer space theme and one pirate ship wreckage theme, both involving blue light projections on the walls. Best ones are on Love Hotel Hill in Shibuya.

I’ve never been up north except to Sapporo, which is worth it for all the yummy food (cheese, milk, chocolate, ramen, etc.)

If you are in Kyoto you need to see eeeeeverything which is exhausting and interesting. Wander around at night and try to find maikosan, I found the perfect street for it our last night there.

Have fun, enjoy!

I highly recommend the Edo-Tokyo Museum. It’s such an amazing place! Also in addition to visiting castles, make sure you stop by a temple. They are beautiful, serene places.

I wish I had the chance to see Harajuku too…

One more thing about love hotels! Most aren’t operated by touch screens but by tiny, tiny old Japanese ladies. Sometimes having a conversation with her about whcih room you’d like to stay in that night is equally as awesome and awkward as choosing a sex room via touch screen.

@lolo7835: haha! definitely! mr. sew is scared of the monkeys though. you can’t look them in the eye!
@xoxokristin: can i just live there like you? so lucky! I’ll definitely show mr. sew your suggestions! :)
@kwago: definitely! and i love a good museum, thanks for the suggest!
@alivoo01: yeeeppp! i haven’t taken a vacation (other than our planning trip) for the past three years, so I’m pumped! :)
