I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I Am Not the Decider

March 17th, 2010 @ 4:17 pm by Mrs. Pencils

Oh, hello bandwagon, may I get on? K, thanks.

The cake buffet bandwagon!

So let me tell you a story, interspersed with amazing photos of cake buffets.

A long time ago (read: last November) the Pencils chose their menu and cake. We chose the cake flavors, the shape, and the design. The only problem? We absolutely, utterly and completely forgot what we chose.

As I forgot and forgot what we had decided, I dwelled on what I realized I wanted: a cake buffet.

Cake buffets like the amazing Mrs. Avocado had and cake buffets like the one gorgeous Mrs. Dumpling meant to have.

Mrs. Avo’s fantastic buffet!

So at our venue tasting, I spoke with our baker and asked her if we could change our plan (which, we discovered was a three tier round cake with green vertical stripes). And she said YES! We would just be charged the per serving price and still get our top 6 inch tier included without cost!

The best part of this decision? I don’t have to choose just one or two or three cake flavors—we can pick up to six whole different ones! I am NOT good at making decisions regarding lots of good options, so now I don’t have to choose!

Do you want to know the flavors we chose? Well, Mr. Pencils and I both just DROP for our baker, Karen Rodney’s, almond pound cake with raspberry Chambord. Oh, I can taste it now. We also chose red velvet, lemon pound, carrot cake (Mr. P says it’s the most amazing carrot cake he’s ever had—I’ll trust him on that) and yellow with chocolate buttercream. That’s it—because Mr. P and I will have the almond pound for our own cake as well, because we love it so much!

Now I want cake. What desserts you all having? Anyone else joining on the cake buffet bandwagon? Toot toot, all aboard!

I’ve been on the cake buffet bandwagon since day one. I love cake too much to have just one flavor!

Cake. Yum. Wait, what was the question again?!? Just kidding - I think a cake buffet is an amazing idea! Especially if the slices are small enough that guests can try more than one flavor. And your choices sound especially yummy :)

I absolutely love this idea! I seriously considered doing a cake buffet as well, but we settled on cupcakes instead! :)

Haha, I love your first line. I hate jumping on bandwagons. At least most of your guests aren’t obsessed with wedding blogs, so they’ll not only think your cake buffet is cute, but totally fresh and original!

I’m wish Miss Spaghetti - totally craving cake now, thanks! We’re having a 5 squared tier cake and our flavors are Princess (traditional yellow cake that looks more white than anything, with a vanilla flavor), Texas Turtle (Devils food cake with caramel and pecans in the filling) and Kalua Mocha (chocolate cake with coffee, vanilla and chocolate liqueur)! Not as many yummy flavors as yours, but now I’m really craving cake!!

We (kinda) went this route and save a bundle of cash! We had a main wedding cake that served a third of our people and then bought the pre-made cakes from our local (delicous) bakery for $.75 per slice. So cheap!

Well we’re going somewhat similar– but away from cakes– pie bar!! I love pie. I mean I go crazy during the holiday for all the freaking pie that is available from Halloween to New Year’s. So we’re doing probably 8-10 pies, ranging in 3-5 flavors. so so so excited!!!

We’re definitely doing this, too! We’re so excited about having lots of different flavors. I think it was this wedding that convinced me, even though there are only 3 cakes:

Oh gosh, I so love cake buffets, and there are two main reasons why: 1- I heart cake. The more the better. 2- I adore cake stands. You can do such fun ones with cakes that aren’t gargantuan in size! :)

I don’t care if I don’t get dinner at our wedding, however I must have cake. Our plan was to do 3 layers and 3 flavors, but you’ve outcaked us! I think we’ll be contacting our caterer tomorrow : )

We had a cake buffet—if you want any pedistal cake stands (in clear glass), we have some left over to sell (3). Send me a private message if interested! The cake buffet was a huge hit and we had enough cake that people could come back and get seconds of a different flavor! Super fun!
