Photo Fun

March 17th, 2010 @ 6:14 pm by Mrs. Starfish

Miss Piglet did an awesome post on Photoscape, which is a free photo editing software. When I first read her post, I had been debating whether or not to purchase Photoshop. I really didn’t want to spend the money on the program, but I loved being able to edit all my photos.

When I saw Miss Piglet’s post and saw the word free, I figured, why not give it a try? Well, after editing multiple photos, I give this product two thumbs up. It is super easy to use, and I feel like it is a little more basic than Photoshop, but that’s all I really need.

I had fun editing photos from a few recent events, but it was really cool to use with our engagement pictures. I loved the way our photographer had edited the photos, but it was fun to be able to zoom in on a couple of pictures and play around with them to get a whole new effect.

Here are a few of my experiments:

Before:

After cropping and blurring: (I think blurring leaves a dreamy effect)

A different approach: I changed it to black and white and increased the blurring, making the “Love is Life” graffiti the focal point.

After: Cropping and black and white effect

After: Sepia Tone—this one reminds me of a vintage postcard

After: Cropping—it was fun to zoom in and see our facial expressions on different shots

Have you used any photo editing software? Which one do you think is the best? Do you know of any free programs?

I am lucky enough to have Photoshop at home, but when I need to do some photoediting at work I use Gimp. It is free and very similar to Photoshop. Although if you aren’t familiar with the tools in Photoshop it can be a little daunting.

I use Picasa. It has several nice features, and is free as well. Photoshop is way too pricey, but I would love to have it.

I love how you zoomed and fuzzed the photos! I’ve never tried this photoscape but it looks like it works well. I lucked out and got the entire photoshop suite for a discounted price from the University of Pgh software licensing.

@rachel_leigh: I’ll have to check Gimp out, thanks! :)
@Miss Spaghetti: yay! It’s pretty great for beginners, photoshop is more in depth, but if you just need something more basic, it’s pretty awesome. We designed our save the dates with it!
@Nikki: Photoscape actually is Picasa!
@labrat: That’s awesome! My brother originally put it on our computer, I really wish we still had it!

http://www.picnik.com is a great photo editing website! they have a bunch of editing effects that you can use for free, or you can upgrade to get “premium” effects for like $25 per year. They also have really handy tools that let you cover-up blemishes, whiten teeth, airbrush, etc. I use it alllll the time!

I use Picassa all the time…I love the Retouch feature. I even used it to create a movie of pictures for the wedding that I burned to a DVD.
