Mrs. Pencils's Picture
Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MD Age and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non Profit Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Morningside Inn About Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!
About Mrs. Pencils

OK, lame title. Forgive me?

It’s taken me months to put together the pieces of our guestbook, mainly because I refused to spend more money that necessary on each piece. I’ve stalked eBay for good deals on postcards that fit our travel theme and spent months thinking about the perfect receptacle for the postcards. Finally, I have pictures!

I am now the proud owner of 180 blank postcards (and 100 some odd used ones—there are some cool old stamps!) for guests to use to write us a well wishes on on our wedding day.

There are a variety of black and white and color postcards, as well as ones reppin’ the US, Europe, Asia and South America.

I purchased them all off eBay, averaging at about 20 cents per postcard. I bought about 100 in a large group and the other 150 in smaller groups of 20 and 30.

But what will guests put them in? I struggled with this too- until I remembered a brilliant idea:

A Guest Book Fitting For... Our Guests?! : wedding frederick guestbook Mailbox mailbox

source - the actual mailbox I should have arriving on my doorstep any day now! Only $12.97!

Years ago, Mr. Pencils bought me these cheesy old airline stickers:

I’ll cover the white mailbox with the stickers for the travel look as well:

We’ll stamp the postcards and have our parents mail them to us while we’re on our honeymoon so we have some lovely post waiting for us upon our return.

But I need your help, hive. Should I have the guests write whatever they want, or should I give them some sentence starters?

This is brilliant! Suggested prompts are always a good idea–people that can’t think of anything will be more likely to write something instead of just giving up. But you could present it as just a suggestion.

I’m so doing the same thing! Awesome! I’m having my guests just write whatever they want.

Are you finding special stamps, or going with the polar bear ones? Thats my current dilemma…

Awesome! I scoured the internets looking for a vintage mailbox for our card box and ultimately gave up. I love how well the mailbox fits with your theme and with the postcards. Can’t wait to see it all come together!
Mad props for your vintage postcard hunting skills

Such a creative idea! I think you should let the guests write whatever they want. Just put up an explanatory sign next to the mailbox and voila!

What a great idea and how very fun!! I’m torn on the idea of giving them sentence starters. Perhaps you could have a few on display but let them craft their own ideas?!?

I think they should write whatever they want. I love personal messages that obviously meant a lot to the writer.

I woud have some with starters and some blank because some people like me get mind stage fright in cases like that.

I love reading your posts because I’m having a travel themed wedding also! This is such a great idea, I love it! I’m currently scouring ebay as well for blank vintage postcards that I’m going to use as their escort cards. I’ll be writing a personal message on each of them.

I think some blank and some with prompts would be great.

I love this idea, the mailbox really ties it all together. I think you should leave the postcards blank to let the guests come up with their own special notes for you.

Great idea! I also agree with having some with starters and some not, so guests can have their pick. :)

That is so great!! I am using an old overnight case of my grandmother’s for our cardbox.

It’s really old and cracking in spots and I decided to use vintage travel stickers to decorate it with. It turned out awesome.

Do html tags work in these comments? I’ll give it a shot.
