Babes-in-Weddingland

March 18th, 2010 @ 11:46 am by Mrs. Veggie

Introducing the youngest members of our bridal party: our nieces and nephews. On his side: Scotty, age 6, Brady (who will be 5 by the wedding), and Mikey (who turns 1 the week after the wedding).

Who says two-colored socks and mullets went out of style in 1992?

I know it’s a stretch to include anyone under 3 in the wedding, but we’re going to try. Our wedding is all about family, so there’s no way that we could leave any kiddos out. And, I’m not sure if you noticed the twinkle in these girls’ eyes, but they are all pretty feisty sprouts. Annie + Brady = excitement. I guess we’ll have to expect the unexpected.

Do you have any ideas for incorporating the itty-bitties? I like the ideas of a cute little red wagon, or a vintage trike making their way down the aisle, but when I look at photos wagons seem a bit cumbersome and awkward. Am I crazy for wanting under threes to be in the wedding party? Should it be walking tots only?

Do you think we will end up with this?

Or this?

Does anyone have a babes-in-weddingland story of success or utter disaster?

I have little ones as well - I said I would never have a ring bearer and flower just for the sake of having them, but he has a neice and I have a nephew. THey will be almost 2 and almost 3 (respectively) byt the time the wedding rolls around.
I have NO expectations for them. If the time comes and they don’t even want to go in the church that is fine by me.
I think the secret is to not build up expectations too high and let things ride.

We’re having FI’s niece, who will be 1 1/2 at the wedding, pulled down the aisle in a little red wagon. It fits with the theme of the day.

My flowergirl will be 2 and my ring bearer will be 3. I have a strong feeling neither of them will be wanting to walk down the aisle so I told the mom’s if they wanted to walk them down the aisle, that’s fine, and if they don’t want to go at all - then I just have to accept that! In an alternate universe, both will walk down the aisle happily with the FG dropping bucket fulls of flower petals! :-)

My 18 month old nephew was my ring bearer. The plan was for my brother to walk next to him down the aisle, but when the doors to the church opened, the little guy froze. My brother carried him down the aisle - it was too cute! Whether or not you go the wagon route, I’d definitely have an older escort for your little bitty guys.

My flower girl is 5.5 and my ring bearer turns 7 today. They both read, so I suspect they’ll do fine. I will have “honorary” flower girls would will be 18 and 20 months by the time of the wedding. They’ll have the same dress as the flower girl, but won’t walk or have flowers.

I LOVE the mullet and two colored socks! What a cutie patootie! We aren’t having any wee ones in the wedding. My niece is a jr bridesmaid at age 8 though. I figure it will be good for her to be in a more “grown up” role.

My flowergirl (husband’s littlest half sister) was 6 at our wedding and was awesome. But she was only 4 at my husband’s sister’s wedding, and in that one she refused to participate because she didn’t like her sash (brown was a “boy color”). My solution, knowing her temperamental nature, was to tell my step-MIL and the flowergirl to pick out the flowergirl dress on their own with the instruction that she look cute. That way they could control how much to spend and the flowergirl would have a good shot at being happy with her dress, and if she bailed on the wedding day it wouldn’t be as though all my effort had been for nothing.

I say it’s great for you to hope they participate, but I wouldn’t put too much money or effort into their attire because you never know what may transpire on the day-of. I hope it turns out well!

We had a three year old flowergirl and she was a dream. We made a big deal out of how special it was to wear a pretty dress like the bride and how important she was because she got to go down right before me. Basically, made it a little game. She went down the aisle like a champ, smiling and waving the whole time :)

Just make it fun, I guess!

Funny this should come up :D

Our ringbearer (Mr. Taco’s 4.5 yr old nephew) might actually not make an appearance. His parents are concerned about flying with him, since he and his little brother can kind of be a terror, particularly on a 3-hour flight from Dallas to SF. Sigh. They’re still working out the particulars, but it is kind of a bummer to hear this kind of stuff after being given the OK.

I’d love love love for him to be there (ringbearer duties aside), but we’ll see what happens.

Yeah, they might scream, but that’ll be cute too! They’re just too adorable not to include, even if someone has to help them down the aisle. :)

Usually, no matter what they do, it still ends up cute! I wonder, at what age, that charm ends. :)

What a cute bunch of kids! I love kids in weddings. They really add something special and they look adorable when they are all dressed up.

The three we had in our wedding did a fantastic job! I’m so glad they were part of our day.

My niece was in her first wedding at 18 months old. She walked down the aisle with a big smile on her face like a pro. She’s our flower girl in May, now 3.5 years old. When asked if she wants petals or a princess wand, she said “both”. Kid is a diva!

Some kids love it, some freak out, it will all be part of what makes your wedding memorable and special, no matter which way it goes. Just make sure everyone knows the plan if your little ones melt down (i.e. who retrieves them from the aisle, etc).

Good luck!

My 4.5 year old Niece walked down the aisle with her 2 year old brother rather successfully. But my 2.5 year old niece had to be carried down by my Sister/MOH. Anyway you slice it, crying or not, they are cute. Just have the parents on stand by for a melt down.

i’d have an adult at the ready to guide them down. you never know with kids. sometimes the most outgoing kid turns shy at the last second

We are having 2 very well-behaved 2 1/2 year olds in our wedding. (We’re also having a 7-year old niece as our second flower girl, and she will help to wrangle the two little ones down the aisle.) Like Beesgf, we’re keeping the expectations REALLY low. If the little ones decide that they don’t wanna walk down the aisle when the time comes, so be it!
