Flower Power

March 18th, 2010 @ 4:51 pm by Mrs. Guinea Pig

Check it out: Mardi Gras colored centerpieces!!

Flower Power : wedding baltimore flowers Flowers07 flowers07

(Purple, green, and yellow(/gold)!)

But ohhh wait a sec, our colors are bright blue and pale yellow! Right.

Remember when I mentioned it was important to stress that blue flowers actually be blue? Well I thought I’d do a test run, and yup, it’s important!

Last week I had our final meeting with the florist just to make a few adjustments, and I got to take home a centerpiece mockup (shown above and below):

Flower Power : wedding baltimore flowers Flowers08 flowers08

(I spy a skulking kitty who really wants to eat these flowers)

The florist apologized profusely but said that she couldn’t get any blue irises; all of the irises that arrived were purple. She did say. “Rest assured, the ones for your wedding will be blue!”  I’ll just say I didn’t sleep well that night. Nothing against purple. :)

Despite the incredibly bright yellow and the purple vs. blue debate, I liked the overall feel of the arrangement - the greenery, the fullness, and the variety of flowers. I think (hope?) it’s just the right look for a fun semi-formal, on-the-water wedding! However I had trouble seeing past the purpleness of the irises, so I threw the photo into Photoshop and did my best at hacking the color to blue and making the yellow a little lighter:

(my Photoshopped version: lightened the yellows and changed purple -> blue!)

Muuuuch better! I think I will just have to have blind faith in the florist that she will deliver blue flowers on the day, and get over it if she doesn’t. There could be worse things, right? At least purple flowers aren’t deadly and don’t smell like cat butt!

I was also a little concerned that our tables would look plain with just a short or tall vase with an arrangement like this, because we won’t have colored linens, chargers, menus, or awesome homemade napkins. No favors at each place setting, and no other decorations on the table: very simple. I had to search a while to find a table as I imagined in weddingblogland - most that were featured seemed to be overloaded with stuff, which of course left me feeling insecure. Like maybe I hadn’t planned enough stuff for our guests to stare at while eating. Shouldn’t they be talking to each other, anyway?!

(From Style Me Pretty)

I like the simplicity of this though, because it really lets the wood barn/space shine. However, we won’t be in an awesome barn, we’ll be in a ballroom - so I’m still wondering if I shouldn’t try to add something little to our table arrangement. Is our flower power strong enough?? Of course, I haven’t even thought about table numbers yet, sooo… that could help. :)

Are you having simple floral centerpieces? How are you spicing up your tables? Is anyone else slightly stressed about blue vs. purple flowers?

We’re having blue flowers thrown in, but we are going a more saturated blue-violet. Bells of Ireland are a good thing to check, as well as different colored hydrangeas. We have some hydrangeas at our house that I swear go almost neon blue with slightly purple centers. Suuuper saturated.

If you’re worried about it why not scatter some tea lights on the tables? Or, you could always place the centerpieces on a round mirror with some tea lights on it as well. Not terribly expensive, and candlelight is always lovely.

I’m having a single floral arrangement on my reception tables with no additional colors or accessories. Hopefully, people will be too busy eating and having a good time to notice the lack of table colors! Your arrangment is full though so it’ll be a focal point!

My friend got married last summer and used blue hydrangeas. And they were BLUE. No question. Would they be available for you?

And thank you for the picture of that tablescape! I have been picturing clean white tablecloths with simple centerpieces in my head and this is the best pic for that! I love that look — so clean, stark, simple but beautiful. We are doing soft pink tulip centerpieces on half the tables and candles in glass vases on the other half. Your tables will look great!

I second the tea light idea, too. We had a simple centerpiece with tea lights, and it worked great! Incidentally, ours were Mardi Gras colors on purpose ;-) The blue and yellow will look great!

Wait, jk jk jk. Not Bells of Ireland. Delphinium. I get them confused, and we’re having both.

I’m stressed about blue flowers also! Mine have to be blue since purple is another one of my colors and I want flowers with both colors, not just one. I’d rather die some dasies blue than have flowers that are a blue/purple mix naturally.

@Miss Pudding, @alivoo01: Thanks! Yes, I’m hoping that people will be too busy eating and dancing to wonder what other stuff could have been put on the table!
@Miss Scissors (and @rachel_leigh): I LOVE those bright neony blue hydrangeas. Trouble is, they’re more expensive, and I’m too cheap to pay more for ‘em :)
@AprilBride10, @TexicanMexican: Tea lights on a mirror! That sounds like it could work…. and cheaply!
@Miss Scissors: I think we are actually putting some of those in the arrangements! (Delphinium) - good call :D
@Hgiel46137: Ooh, yes - although maybe you could have a few that are bluish purple in addition to the straight up blue and purple flowers - might be a nice spectrum!

Haha - wouldn’t life be nice if we could just photoshop the right color into things we liked?!

Your centerpiece turned out great (minus the purple)! I am sure they will be the right color the day of. Also, I am the owner of a plant-eating cat who can sympathize with your little friend there.

I love the simplicity and you can add the extra flourish into the table number display easy.

@Miss Lace: Wow wedding planning would be so much easier if you could just photoshop color onto things!! Shoes… linens… flowers… BM dresses… Gotta figure out a way to invent this!
@tea: Me too!! The centerpieces that are sky high or that you can hardly see around scare me :)
@jordynrose: Thanks! Yes, if I leave the house I have to lock any flowers in our bedroom to prevent one of the cats from eating them (and then throwing it up later), and the other cat who’s favorite trick is to knock over water-filled glasses/vases/you-name-it!

I like your simple idea. My tables were pretty simple with white linens. Maybe add a couple of Votives or scatter a few petals around the base of the Centerpiece.

I get the blue/purple debacle. I would be pretty upset if I got purple instead of blue since we have no purples in our color scheme.

We only had low centerpieces, and I think it worked. Don’t be afraid to keep it simple.

We had 3 simple low centerpieces, worked out great. And you’re right, guests will be talking to each other, not constantly staring at the flowers. Love the flower arrangement.
