Let Them Eat Cupcakes!

March 18th, 2010 @ 2:06 pm by Mrs. Turtle

I love cupcakes. I’ve always loved cupcakes.

Proof: That’s mini me, circa 1992, making sure that no one steals my cupcakes as I sleep in the car.

Does that prove my point? I even made these cupcakes in my ceramics class during my sophomore year of college:

So years ago, I decided that one day, when I got married, I would have wedding cupcakes rather than a wedding cake. What an original idea, huh? Well… once you flash forward to the year 2009, the answer is, um, not so much… but that’s okay! I still love them and they are one of the elements of our wedding that I am most excited about!

When I started planning our wedding, I fell in love with this picture from Martha Stewart Weddings:

It could be because the cupcakes are our wedding colors. It could be because of the adorable milk glass cake stands. It could be my love affair with all things Martha Stewart. Or it could be all of the above. But one thing was for sure, I just had to have those cake stands!!

eBay swooped in to save the day! (Tip: If you are looking for a random item, or just an original style wedding, utilize eBay!! It is so full to the brim with treasures, and often at shockingly low prices!) I showed the above picture to my mom, (who’s a total eBay pro), and she surprised me with this set of 3 Crown Tuscan pink milk glass stands:

Awesome! I absolutely adore these not only because they are pink and will look fabulous at our wedding, but also because they are practical and I can’t wait to use them in our home for the rest of my life!

To look on the bright side of how trendy cupcakes have become, at least there are tons of cute ideas floating around that I can use as resources! There are so many decisions to make! Do we decorate them with real flowers? Frosting flowers? Just cute frosting? There’s even these perfect little cupcake wrappers from Estilo Weddings:

I could even craft some cute little DIY flags like these, also from Estilo Weddings:

So in summary, cupcakes are awesome because they’re totally adorable, can be made in a variety of flavors and designs, they’re already in individual portions meaning there is no cake cutting (aka cake cutting fees!), and they make use of my new cake stands!

Who else is doing cupcakes? Do you have any fun ideas to add to my list?

Oh wow, you’re a baby. You were in a car seat in 1992?

We did cupcakes and they were awesome. And you are so itty bitty. Mr. Peep was in College in ‘92. I feel old.

I love the idea of cupcakes, and having different flavors. But as a guest I would have a horrible time choosing which one to sample!!

1992?!! I was a sophmore in high school. Man I feel old. :) I’m doing cupcakes as well. I just made DIY cupcake flags last weekend. It’s super easy and you can find tons of instructions out there. Can’t wait to see what you decide to do.

That photo is so cute! Perhaps you could incorporate it into your wedding decor somehow, near the cupcakes :)

We’re going with cupcakes too. I have found a place that does itty bitty ones, so I’m planning on ordering 4 or 5 different varieties, all in appropriate colours, and going over on the quantity by about 20 % so that those greedy piggies (i.e, me) who eat 2 or 3 aren’t doing some innocent person out of their sweetie!
Btw, cake cutting fee? Eek! Is there nothing included in reception costs these days?!

Those are some amazing cake stands! I’d so like to find stands like that but our cake plans are in limbo until we find from future hubby’s mom if her baker friend is still offering a free one. =)

There are even bakers here that are now offering cupcake liners with no cupcake! Yes , you read it correctly.
They fill the liner up with only icing for those who really don’t enjoy the cake part.

The little flag is too cute. And those cake stands are such a good find—I’d be thrilled, too!
