Manvites: All Sealed Up

March 18th, 2010 @ 12:35 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Along with Mr. Sew’s desire for no-doodle manvitations, there was another wish he had on his list of things that are formal.

Wax.

I agreed with him. A wax seal screams “formal”. So to realize his vision, I bought Mr. Sew a little double happiness seal, and found some white glue stick wax at the now-closed Pearl Art Store in San Francisco to go with it.

In addition, we purchased some red ribbon, and cut it into 100 ten-inch strips to wrap around our pocket folds.

Now, there’s already a great thread going around on the boards with tips and tricks for glue-gun wax seals, but I’ll show you our process as well.

First, Mr. Sew created an elaborate setup (that’s probably completely unnecessary). He took a baking pan and placed an ice pack inside. Then he covered the ice pack with a loaf pan, creating his “working surface”.

He also used a measuring cup full of ice water. The ice-water was used to chill his metal seal before and after each application.

He simply pumped a few squirts of glue onto his cold surface, and then plopped his ice-chilled seal into the puddle, holding it there until the glue set.

Once set, he pulled the seal out, and peeled the seal off the surface to fully dry. It’s that easy!

Now, he chose not to glue the seal directly on the ribbon belly band since he didn’t want to mess any up on accident. There were quite a few screw-ups at first, since you have to figure out how much of a glue puddle will make a good seal.

He tried melting the mess-ups down to reuse the wax, but it created a sputtering hot mess. I don’t suggest it.

Gathering materials, it was now time to attach ribbon and wax to the cards!

To attach the pre-made seals, we first glued the ribbon together with normal hot glue.

Then we added another hot-glue dot, and placed the seal on top!

Not too shabby!

Cost breakdown thus far:

Total from previous steps: $112.28
Wax seal: $14.90 (with shipping)
Glue sticks: ~$4
Ribbon: ~$18 for six spools (we needed five, but one spool was cut incorrectly)

Total so far: $149.18 or $1.49 per manvite.

Any wax seal guys or gals out there? Real or faux - what’s your preference?

Nice! So do you slide the ribbon off as opposed to breaking the seal? (Sorry for the poor phrase choice)

Oh no! Pearl closed? That’s such bad news. We have a serious lack of art stores here in San Francisco.

Love how those wax seals turned out!

The seal polishes it off nicely! Looks fabulous, Sewing! And can I just say, you’re amazing at documenting all of your projects. I can’t imagine how many brides you’re helping with these tutorials. :D

Miss Sewing (or I guess technically, Mr. Sewing), this post seriously made my day! We’re doing wax seals on our invitations too and I’ve been so nervous about messing them up since we don’t have many extra invitations. It totally hadn’t occurred to me to make the seals separately and glue them! Genius!!!

I’m with Miss Turtle on this one - never occurred to me either! Did he just do them directly on the glass? Great tutorial!

Sewing…I LOVE these. We’ve been wavering back and forth whether or not to do this because the wax was expensive, but this is such a great alternative. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way they look. Now I need to look for a way to use them in our wedding. :)

Love it! What an easy way to personalize the pocketfolds.

Did you let them sit out for a few days? I’m curious as to how long they stick to the silky ribbon…

Beautiful Seals!

We are on the edge of doing seals! I found a place online called nostalgic impressions that sells every color imaginable for cheap and even has a sunflower seal. =) I want to seal our envelopes so bad but I’m afraid that they won’t hold up for those I have to mail and I don’t want to have to buy outer envelopes or pay more in postage because they’d have to be handstamped.

@heather25: I guess they could do either…hmm. The ribbon is pulled pretty tightly, but it’s not glued onto the cardstock or anything, so they can slide it off if they want. But if it were me I’d probably want to break the seal like an award show or something, haha!
@October2010Bride: I know! if they close utrecht i will be one sad sewing..
@sboston06: definitely check it out! they are a lot of fun :)
@Miss Turtle: yeah! who knows how many failed invites we would have had otherwise…
@Miss Jellyfish: yep, directly on the glass!
@Miss Pinot Grigio: hmm. well so far they’ve been sitting out for 2 days without problem. i’ve got a few weeks to go before their ready for mailing, so I’ll be on the lookout! as long as they stay on long enough to reach their destinations I’ll be okay, I think! :)

@labrat: that’s the same place I got my seal, and it works great! i’m not sure how a seal on the outside envelope would fair, but inside it *should* be fine.. you could always ask the post office for their opinion?

@labrat: I just received a wedding invite in the mail with a seal on the outer envelope. It looked great when it arrived! I have no idea what kind of process they used but it definitely held up.

Sewing, these look awesome!
